AftertheBuddhapassedawayroughly2500yearsago,500ofhistopdisciplesgatheredtogetherinagrandcouncil.Together,theyreviewedand
discussedhisteachingswordbyword.Thesedisciplesbecameknownasthe500Arhats.
WhenBuddhismspreadfromIndiatoChina,thereweresomeculturaladjustments.Forexample,theChinesepaidspecialhomageto18ofthe
500Arhats.Statuesofthese18LuohanareoftenfoundinBuddhisttemplestoday.
WhenBodhidharmataughtattheShaolinTemple(roughly1000yearsafterthepassingoftheBuddha),hechosetopayhomagetothese18
Luohan,perhapsinanefforttoreachacrosstheculturaldivide.SohenamedasetofQigongtechniquesafterthem.(Asanaside,Ifeelthatmy
teacherdidsomethingsimilarbynotonlywritinghisbooksinEnglish,butbytranslatingtheseartsintoWesternculture.)
ThewordShoumeanshands,butreferstothe18techniques.Soafigurativetranslationwouldbethe18TechniquesoftheEnlightenedOnes.
Overtime,the18LuohanHandsevolvedintothe18LuohanFists.Here,fistsalsoreferstothetechniques,butimpliesthattheyarenotjustfor
health.Inotherwords,itwasaformofKungFu.ThiswasthebirthofShaolinKungFu,amartialartthatwouldbecomelegendary.

The18LuohanHandsarethefundamentalQigongexercisesthatIteach.Thefirstexercise,LiftingTheSky,istheveryfirstexerciseIteachto

studentsdosomepowerfulhealing.

DuanJinQigong).ThisisoneofthemostwidelypracticedQigongsetsintheworld.Althoughpracticedasaseparateset,these8exercises
correspondtothefirst8exercisesinthe18LuohanHands.

Therearecountlessversionsandinterpretationsofthe18LuohanHands.Becausemyteacherisanidealist,heworked
hardresearchingclassicaltextsinordertorecreatethemosttraditionalversion.ThesetthatIinheritedfromhimisprobablyascloseaswellever
gettotheoriginalwithouttravelingbackintime.
Butwhetherornotthesetisthesameastheoriginalisnotasimportant.Whatmattersisthis:Itworks.TheexercisesthatIteachinmyschool
areamazinglyeffective.ItspossiblethattheyreevenmoreeffectivethattheonesthatBodhidharmataught.Afterall,theyvehad1500yearsto
perfectthem.

WheredidBodhidharmagettheseexercises?Itsimpossibletosay,butagoodguessisthathewasoriginallytaughtsomeformofYogainIndia.
LegendsaysthatBodhidharmameditatedinthecaveneartheShaolinTemplefor9years.Itspossiblethat,inhisdeepmeditation,Bodhidharma
modifiedthetechniqueshehadlearnedasaprinceintothethreesetsoftechniques.Inthatsense,hemayhavepluckedtheexercisesfromthe
cosmos.
Doesthatsoundwoowootoyou?Iadmitthat,20yearsago,itmighthavesoundedprettyweirdtometoo.ButnowIrealizethatallgreatart
happensinadeepstateofmeditationandisessentiallypluckedfromthecosmos.MozartsaidthathismusicflowedtohimfromGod.DaVinci
wentintoadeepstateofmeditationbeforecreatinghisgreatworks.Whenyoulookcarefullyatartiststhroughouthistory(andacrossall
cultures),youfindonethingincommontheyalltappedintothepowerofmeditation.
