(M.E. Engineering Design and Computer Aided Design)

Second Semester

(Regulations

- 2009)

Time: 3 Hours

Maximum Marks: 100

Build and mesh a half symmetry Solid model of the solid bearing shown in Fig. 1. Use (100)
both free meshing and swee,p meshing techniques. Dimensions of the bearing are to be
taken suitably. The bearing is be fixed and applied with the load due to rotatiotfof the
shaft.and the self weight acting on. the bearing. Take suitable loads and analyze the
bearing based on its strength. tsearing material properties are to be suitably Selected.

Marks are to be considered based on proper material selection, application by selecting

proper load conditions.

Fig. L

Build a solid model of the spindle base shown in Fig. 2. Use both free meshing and
sweep meshing techniques. The bracket is be fixed and applied with the load due to
rotation of the spindle and the self weight acting on it. Take suitable loads and analyze
the spindle base based on its strength. Spindle base material properties are to be suitably
selected.

Marks are to be considered based on proper rnaterial selection, application by selecting

proper load

conditions.

Model the plate shown in Fig. 6 and determine the stresses, strains and displacements.
The plate is made of steel with modulus of elasticity E:200 GPa, Poisson's ration - 0.25.
Use the symmetry*conditions to solve this problem, by considering only the top right
quarter of the plate. (Refer Fig. 6)

A wall of an industrail oven consists of three different materials, as shown in Fig. 9. The (100)
first layer is composed of 5 cm of insulating cement with a clay binder that has a thermal
conductivity of 0.08 Wm-K. The second layer is made from 15 cm of 6-ply asbestos
board with a thermal conductivity of 0.074 Wm-or. The exterior consists of l0 cm
common brick with a thermal conductivity of 0.72Wlnl -K. The inside wall temperature

Hot water flows through pipes that are smbedded in a concrete slab. A section of the slab (100)
is shown in Fig. 10. The temperature of the water inside the pipe is 50oC, with a
corresponding heat transfer coefficient of 200 Wlm2-f. With the conditions shown at the
surface, use any analysis software to determine the temperature of the surface. Assuming
that the heat transfer coefficient associated with the hot-water flow remains constant, find
the water temperature at which the surface freezes. Neglect the thermal resistance
through the pipe walls.
