rom rulers of the present to rulers of the
past, born in the Baltic seaport town of
Stettin, Catherine II, Catherine The
Great, rose to be Empress of all Russia from
1762 up until her death in 1796. Her drink is to
be shaken & strained in a martini glass. Pour in
the following: 1-1/2 oz Stolichnaya vodka, a
splash of fresh squeezed lemon juice, a splash of
Cointreau, and a dash of Framboise. Strain in,
and top with Taittinger champagne. Garnish
with a slice of orange.
Like the value of a precious stone, the sipping
of a great drink made well can be just as appeal-
ing to the mind’s eye. The flavor and look of the
Pink Diamond is a real beauty on the palate. In
a chilled martini glass, shake & strain 2-1/2 oz
Finlandia cranberry vodka, 1/2oz Dekuyper
Peachtree schnapps, and 1/2 oz Dole pineapple
juice. Garnish with either rose petals or nastur-
tium flowers.
The Canadian rock trio Rush is where the
song name of this cocktail is derived from. Liv-
ing in the Limelight is the universal theme
for those who wish to dream, so put aside your
alienation and get on with the fascination, the
real sensation, the underlying scream. Shake &
strain the following in an ice cold martini glass:
2 oz Hangar One Kaffir Lime vodka, a splash
of Midori melon liqueur, and 3/4 oz Knudsen
grapefruit juice. Garnish with a star twist
of lime.
Named after the design of the martini glass,
the Inverted Pyramid is a super chiller with 1 -
1/4 oz Absolut Citron vodka, 1-1/4 oz Absolut
Kurant vodka, and a splash of Grand Marnier.
Garnish with a twist of orange peel. You’re only
a camel ride away after one of these.

mind. Melange is a flavored martini where half
the rim of the glass is dipped in cinnamon
sugar, then pour the following in a shaker: 1
1/2 oz Hampton’s vodka, 1/2 oz Goldschlager,
1/4 oz Hiram Walker triple sec, the juice of 1/2
lime, and a dash of Bols blue curacao to
achieve the topaz blue color. Strain in, and no
garn necessary.
Whether you preferred the stage version with
Keitel and Hurt or the film version with Penn
and Spacey, the commotion and the emotion of
the cocktail Hurlyburly definitely requires
some serious agitation in the form of an ice-
filled shaker. Starting with 1-1/4 oz of Ketel
One Citroen vodka, 1/2 oz Cointreau, 1oz Triple
L sweet & sour, 1/2 oz Tropicana orange juice,
and 1/2 oz Ocean Spray cranberry juice. Garnish
with dried cranberries.
Every September in Los Angeles, the annual
Inkslinger’s Ball is held for three days at the fa-
mous Hollywood Palladium on Sunset and Ar-
gyle. I usually tend bar for this event as it’s quite
a visual to behold. Therefore, I’ve chosen the
Tattooed Love Goddess as the signature cock-
tail for this psychedelic liquid pleasure. Shake &
strain 1oz Level vodka, 1oz of Dr. McGillicuddy’s
vanilla schnapps, 1 1/2 oz Godiva chocolate
liqueur (white or dark), and a dash of cream.
Strain in a chilled martini glass and garnish with
a vanilla or chocolate cookie.
For those of you who like it dirty or kinky,
step up to the Filthy Rotten but I Love it Mar-
tini. In a shaker goes 3 oz of Belvedere vodka,
3/4 oz of Dirty Sue olive brine, and dashes of
Tabasco and Lea & Perrins Worcestershire
sauce. Chill & strain in a martini glass, and gar-
nish with an anchovy in the bottom of the glass
and an onion ring on the side dish. Also, have a
stick of spearmint gum in a shot glass.
