International Criminal Bar Newsletter – Editorial Policy

The International Criminal Bar is a broad-based association of individuals,

national and regional bar associations and non-governmental organizations
working to ensure that counsel appearing before the ICC are able to practice in
total independence. Our aims include assisting counsel to speak in a strong and
unified voice regarding issues which affect their practice such as Ethics, Legal
Aid and Training, and to defend an essential principle: the right to a fair trial for
the accused and a meaningful opportunity to participate for victims.

The ICB is led by an Executive Committee and a Governing Council, both of

which are elected by the membership.

The ICB newsletter is intended as a means of sharing information within the ICB
membership and among those qualified to be included on the ICC list of counsel
and raising awareness across a broad audience about the role of the defence
and victims counsel and the evolution of international criminal justice. The
newsletter includes news items that report on recent events, articles that provide
more in-depth information about the work of the ICC and the ICB and publicity for
upcoming events.

Principles
The Executive Committee of the ICB is responsible for producing the newsletter
and making editorial judgements. They are assisted by a General Editor who
acts on behalf of the Executive Committee and at their direction in producing the
newsletter. The Executive Committee will seek to adhere to the following
principles:
_ Accuracy – The Executive Committee will endeavour to ensure the accuracy of
the information included in the newsletter.
_ Impartiality – the issues addressed in the newsletter can often be controversial,
with opinion split on important topics. The Executive Committee will strive to be
impartial on such topics and endeavour to include a range of views in the
newsletter.
_ Fairness – the ICC involves a range of organisations and institutions which
sometimes have conflicting aims. The Executive Committee will strive to be fair in
such circumstances and include reference to all the relevant organisations. The
Executive Committee will not purposely silence organisations by omission.
_ Responsibility – The Executive Committee will seek permission to reproduce
images and acknowledge copyright; they will clearly credit authors if content is
supplied by individuals.

The Editorial Process

Every article is reviewed by the Executive Committee for relevance, timeliness
and usefulness to the audience. In addition, the Executive Committee may need
to validate the content for events and other news to ensure accuracy prior to
publication. If content cannot be confirmed, the material may be held for
publication in a future issue. Every effort will be made to notify the
author/requestor when this situation arises. Content is also reviewed and edited
for style, flow, punctuation, readability and length.
