them safer.
Depending on the vehicle, stability control systems will have a brand name like StabiliTrak in GM
vehicles or AdvanceTrac in Ford vehicles.
Raabe Ford Service Manager George Berelsman
said AdvanceTrac is constantly monitoring wheel
speed and steering activity to help maintain control
of the vehicle while driving in hazardous conditions.
It works through the anti-lock brake system
(ABS) for traction control and keeps wheels from
spinning by slowing the engine to reduce wheel
spin on acceleration, he said. There are times
when a driver may want wheel spin for traction,
for example, if they are stuck in snow. They can
turn the system off with a push of a button located
on the dash.
Delpha Chevrolet Buick Service Manager Bill
Schulte said StabiliTrak works with the anti-lock
break system and when wheels begin slipping,
the system applies pressure to one or more of the

terrorist organization, of previously unimaginable dimensions, which has perpetrated all
kinds of abuses and inhuman acts. It has particularly affected a number of you, who have
been brutally driven out of your native lands,
where Christians have been present since
apostolic times.
Pope Francis was, of course, referring to
the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria
-- a reign of death and destruction that was
selected as the years top religion news story
by members of the Religion Newswriters
Association. And once again, Pope Francis
was selected as Religion Newsmaker of the

Here is the rest of the RNA Top 10 list,

-- Hobby Lobby and Conestoga -- can claim
religious objections to the Affordable Care
Act mandate requiring most religious institutions to offer employees, and often students,
health-insurance plans covering sterilizations
and all FDA-approved contraceptives, including morning-after pills.
3. A rapid deterioration of the IsraeliPalestinian conflict includes the kidnappings
and murders of Israeli and Palestinian civilians, amid increasing tensions over access to
the Temple Mount. This includes an IsraelHamas war that leaves more than 2,000 dead
and a hellish attack on rabbis at prayer in a
synagogue. (TIE) Pope Francis continues his
efforts to reach out to the needy, to marginalized Catholics and to people of other faiths.
4. Liberal Protestants continue to move
toward full acceptance of same-sex marriage
and the ordination of noncelibate gay and
lesbian clergy.
5. Health care workers, many of them missionaries or activists from faith-based groups,
courageously carry on with their work during
the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
6. A broad coalition of Catholics, mainline
Protestants and some evangelicals, especially
in Latino congregations, celebrate President
Barack Obamas executive action on immigration reform.

Musings
By JIM METCALFE
DHI Media Sports Editor
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com
The end of 2014 has come and gone
without fanfare yeah, right! and
we have witnessed the beginning of 2015
without a hitch!
And I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell
you! Cheap!
The end of a calendar year always
brings reflections and resolutions.
I have resolved to make no resolutions
in 2015 because they only last for about
36.5 hours, anyway.

DEAR ABBY: I
am recently divorced
and now seeing a
wonderful
woman
who is pretty much
everything I was
looking for except
for a couple of issues,
which concern going
out to eat -- which we
do often. Not once
has she offered to pay
for a meal.
I
make
good
money, but she is not
financially strapped
by any means. While
I can live with her not
paying, what annoys
me is she rarely says
thank you after a

When situations

In with the
new: Snappy
apps for 2015
NEW YORK (AP) Uber,
Facebook, Instagram sure,
theyve been all the rage, but
as 2014 winds down were all
ready for something fresh. From
ride-hailing to photo sharing,
here are a few up-and coming
apps and startups to watch in in
2015. Which will be the breakout hit of the new year?
TELL A STORY
Instagram, which is owned
by Facebook Inc., now has
300 million users more
than Twitter. Scrolling through
its snapshot feeds gives users
a quick glimpse into the lives
of friends and strangers. (At
least the parts that include
empty beaches, cappuccinos with perfect foam hearts
and smiling babies in clean
clothes.) Its simplicity is part
of its appeal. But what if you
want to tell a longer story?
Enter Storehouse, a mobile
app that promises to let you
share your stories, as they
happen. Instead of sharing
one-off photos, Storehouse
lets users combine photos,
videos and words to share
anything from a detailed recipe, to travel memories or a
first-person documentary on
the Yakuza. Storehouse was
founded by Mark Kawano,
who previously worked at
Apple as a User Experience
Evangelist, helping developers design iOS and Mac apps.
COOK A MEAL
New DIY services will provide carefully measured ingredients and detailed recipes for
even the clumsiest of cooks.
Sites such as HelloFresh,
Plated and Blue Apron deliver
weekly boxes of raw ingredients even including spices
and, at least in the case of
HelloFresh, water. The only
things youre assumed to have
in your pantry are salt, pepper, oil and possibly butter.
An upcoming family plan
box for Blue Apron, for example, features chicken under
a brick with rosemary,
roast potatoes and broccolini;
New England-style shrimp
rolls with warm potato and
kale salad; fresh pappardelle
Bolognese with romaine,
celery and apple salad and
two-cheese pizza with iceberg
chopped salad. The meals are
quick to prepare, so if youre
tired of takeout and live in
their delivery location, these
services could spice up your
diet. Or maybe help with that
eat-healthy New Years resolution?
CHIT CHAT
Youve heard of WhatsApp,
the nearly-free messaging app
that Facebook paid $22 billion for this year. And theres
Facebooks own messaging
tool, which was the years
most-downloaded app (likely
because you had to download
it if you wanted to message
people using Facebook).
Thats all so 2014. Why
message people you know
when you could instead check
out Ethan, a messaging app
that lets you do just one thing
message a guy named
Ethan. He may message you
time to time but cautions that
he cant respond when hes
asleep. Nothing if not honest, Ethan doesnt want you to
message him in an emergency,
and will advise you not to fall
in love with him. But want
to plan a dinner-and-movie
night? No problem. Should

Whats the limit? NIAAA says low-risk drinking means no more than four drinks in any single
day and no more than 14 in a week for men, and
no more than three drinks a day and seven a week
for women.
Genes play a role in whos vulnerable to crossing the line into alcohol abuse. So do environmental factors, such as getting used to drinking a certain amount, not to mention how your own brains
circuitry adapts.
Treatment can range from inpatient rehab and
12-step programs to behavioral therapy and the few
medications available today. Koob, who specializes
in the neurobiology of alcohol, says it usually takes
a combination and ultimately, you have to change
your life.
Yet a recent review for the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality estimated that less than a
third of people who need treatment get it, and of
those, less than 10 percent receive medications.
Three drugs are approved by the Food and
Drug Administration to treat alcohol abuse. One,
naltrexone, blocks alcohols feel-good sensation
by targeting receptors in the brains reward system
if people harbor a particular gene. The anticraving pill acamprosate appears to calm stressrelated brain chemicals in certain people. The older
Antabuse works differently, triggering nausea and
other aversive symptoms if people drink while taking it.
Recent research suggests a handful of drugs
used for other disorders also show promise:
Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute
found the epilepsy drug gabapentin reduced relapses in drinkers whod recently quit, and improved
cravings, mood and sleep by targeting an emotionrelated brain chemical.
A study by NIAAA and five medical centers
found the anti-smoking drug Chantix may help
alcohol addiction, too, by reducing heavy drinkers
cravings.
And University of Pennsylvania researchers
found the epilepsy drug topiramate helped heavy
drinkers cut back, if they have a particular gene
variation mostly found in people of European
descent.
Back in NIHs bar lab, one of about a dozen
versions around the country, the focus is on ghrelin,
the hormone produced in the stomach that controls
appetite via receptors in the brain. It turns out
theres overlap between receptors that fuel overeating and alcohol craving in the brains reward
system, explained NIAAAs Leggio.
In a study published this fall, his team gave
45 heavy-drinking volunteers different doses of
ghrelin, and their urge to drink rose along with the
extra hormone.
Now Leggio is testing whether blocking ghrelins action also blocks those cravings, using an
experimental Pfizer drug originally developed for
diabetes but never sold. The main goal of this firststep study is to ensure mixing alcohol with the drug
is safe. But researchers also measure cravings as
volunteers, hooked to a blood pressure monitor in
the tiny bar-lab, smell a favorite drink. Initial safety
results are expected this spring.
