a) It is required to design a pair of spur gears with 200 full-depth involute teeth based on the 8M
Lewis equation. The velocity factor is be used to account for dynamic load. The pinion
Shaft is connected to a 10kw. 1440 rpm motor. The starting to the motor is 150% of the
rated torque. The speed reduction is 4:1 The pinion as well as gear is made of plain carbon
steel 40C8 (Sut=600N/mm2). The factor of safety can be taken as 1.5 design the
gears, specify their dimensions and suggest suitable, surface hardness for the gears.
The Lewis form factor Y is 0.308 for 18 teeth.
b) A pair parallel helical gears constant of a 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 100 teeth gear. 8M

Surface hardness of 300 BHN. The service factor and the factor of safety are 1.5 and 2
Respectively. Assume that the velocity factor accounts for the dynamics for the dynamic

2.
a) Derive the Lewis beam strength equation for spur gear tooth. State the assumptions
made.
b) Explain the virtual number of teeth and its significance in the design of helical gears.
c) A pair of parallel helical gears consists of 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 100 teeth gear.
The pinion rotates at 720 rpm. The normal pressure angle is 200 while the helix angle is
250. The normal module is 4mm and the face width is 40 mm. Both the gears are made
of steel ( Sut = 600 N/mm2 ) and heat treated to 300 BHN. The service factor and the
factor of safety are 1.5 and 2 respectively. Assume that the velocity factor accounts
for the dynamic load and calculate the power transmitting capacity of gear pair.
Assume form factor Y = 0.484 z = formative number of teeth

3. a) It is required to design a pair of spur gears with 200 full depth involute teeth. The input
shaft rotates at 720 rpm and receives 5kw power through flexible coupling. The speed
of the output shaft is 144 rpm. The pinion as well as the gear are made of steel having
ultimate tensile strength of 410 N/mm2. The service factor for the application is 1.25.
The gears are machined to meet the specifications of grade 8. Assume number of teeth
on pinion as 18.
Tooth error for grade 8 is e = 16 + 1.25 [m+0.25d] in microns
Lewis form factor Y = 0.308 for 18 teeth.
Determine:
i) For preliminary calculations, assume pitch line velocity as 5 m/sec and the factor of safety as 2
