Sno-Cleats trail administrator, John Olmscheid, of

and from Sauk Centre to Padua

Were currently working
on opening a new trail from Elrosa to Meire Grove once the

taken care of, said Olmscheid,
who is active at the county and

Collin Messer, of Sauk

I became interested in
snowmobiles when I was about
12 years old. I got a few rides
on dads 1978 Arctic Cat El

hooked on snowmobiling and
Arctic Cat. Everyone seems to
have their own preference, he
said.
Messer spent the next number of years either riding, working on a snowmobile or dreaming of riding a better model. He
bought his first snowmobile at
the age of 15 with his brother: a

When I was 19, I got my

GREY EAGLE Christmas might come once a year,

but for Chuck and Kathy
Parker of Cornerstone Pines
in Grey Eagle, its something
they think about all year
long.
Their
seven-year-old
Christmas tree business has
grown every year as the
Parkers work to make the
Christmas season enjoyable
for their customers.
One thing we want to do
on this farm is offer a place
for a family experience,
said Chuck. Getting a tree is
a family experience.
To enhance that experience, Cornerstone Pines is
open from the Saturday before Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. Customers can select a tree and get involved
in other activities, such as
sleigh rides and straw tunnels and visits to Santa
Claus workshop. There have
also been petting zoos at the
site. All of these are free with
the purchase of a tree.
We also have a gift
shop, said Kathy. Its limited because of the size, but
we carry Christmas decorations.
Creating one-stop Christmas tree shopping is part of
providing for a pleasant experience.

As much as possible,
the entire operation at Cornerstone Pines is done in an
eco-friendly way.
We have horse-drawn

We also give rides throughout the farm and show our

The trees are the focus

The season for selling starts
in October when the Parkers host tagging events,

Those days also feature bonfires where people can roast

Getting trees ready takes
most of the year, and like
all farms there is a planting,
growing and harvesting season. With Christmas trees,
however, it is better to think
in terms of years.
A lot of people dont
know it takes about 10 years
to grow a Christmas tree,
said Chuck. Planting is the
hardest part. Its like picking
rocks. You have to get on
your knees for each tree.
There is also waiting
and watching to see how the
trees grow. Over the years
the Parkers have learned to
appreciate the difference
in various trees. And they
do have a variety of trees,
with roughly 23,000 Christmas trees on their 100 acres,
where fir, spruce and pine
trees are grown.
There are also various
crosses of those trees, said
Chuck. We grow different
varieties of the trees because
we want to have what the customer wants. Also, because if
one variety is stressed, not all
will get stressed or harmed.
In recent years, trees
have been bred with the idea
of lasting longer.
The new varieties are
bred to be better trees for
customers, said Chuck.
Needle retention is the biggest thing people want. That
is what trees are being bred
for.
Even when growing
trees, they work to be environmentally friendly. So
far, they have not had to use
pesticides. In part, that may
be because their Christmas
trees are gown in open spots
between and among oak and
birch trees.
We hope and pray
we dont have to go into
pesticides, said Chuck.
Now, we have enough
birds to keep bugs out.
We are trying hard to be
eco-friendly, as much as
we can.
This year they sent
five trees for display in
Washington, D.C. The
big Christmas tree in
Washington, D.C., came
from Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota.

Customers of Virgils and neighbors look

they heard the news.
Everyone kept saying, you have to keep

So, with little hesitation, the Kalthoffs decided to decorate their
yard once again, and
they did it in the knick

Traditionally,

We were lucky this

Luckily, they were
able to get almost everything set up on the lawn
before the snow. Afterwards, Virgil moved the
snow around so that they
could lay the electrical
cords on the ground.

With the snow melting, they have been able

to add more to the display. Theyll continue

Mary added, There

Its so much fun to

said Mary. We visit

Along with others

ideas, the couple pays
close attention to garage
and store sales and auctions looking for deals
on lights.
Virgil found many
of the yard decorations
at an auction.
I was at an auction
once and they had so

everyone.
A week ago, Mary
just picked up a few

trees that were on sale at

SNO-CLEATS continued from front

Finally, when I was 21, I bought my first new snowmobile: a 2004 Arctic Cat F6.
When Messer was 24, he began riding with Chris
Kerfeld, who was at the time a Sauk Centre Sno-Cleats
club member. Soon he attended his first meeting and
then became a member in 2008.
I joined Sno-Cleats to do my part to give back
to the community for something I loved to do. SnoCleats is an important organization for those who love
the outdoors and who love winter-time recreation,
said Messer, whose current model is a 2009 Arctic Cat
M8 153 Sno Pro.
I enjoy riding it out West in the Big Horn mountains or in the upper peninsula of Michigan.
The beginning of the Sno-Cleats club dates back
to 1969, with formal trail grooming starting later that
decade.
Russ Beilke, of Sauk Centre, current president,
who has been a Sno-Cleats club member since the
1970s, remembers the early years of the organization.

The clubs first actual trail groomer was a

640-model Alpine Ski-Doo. After that we had an Arctic Cat groomer. Butch (Leroy) Moritz and I groomed
trails with the old Alpine. I remember once getting
stuck in the slush on a lake. It was hard work keeping
the trails going, said Beilke.
In those early years, Sno-Cleats first groomed
up to Little Sauk and over to Birch Lake Park. Later they developed trails towards West Union and then
branched south.
We used to have an actual rescue sled that was
donated to the fire department. It was used to go out
on the freeway and highways to rescue stranded drivers. Getting people off of the highway was a chore, but
it probably prevented some from dying out there, he
added.
Other leaders in the Sno-Cleats club include vice
president Aaron Wiener and treasurer Andrew Burlet.
Sno-Cleats has volunteers who work with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to provide the

proper snowmobile safety training to the snowmobilers of tomorrow, according to Messer.

Were currently in the process of transitioning
instructors and expect to offer a training course in January. We also work with the fire department to help
them prepare for a snowmobile-related accident.
On Nov. 24, the Sauk Centre fire department and
Sno-Cleats participated in a drill located on the snowmobile trail just east of Sauk Centre.
For the past three years, Sno-Cleats has hosted
a snowmobile swap meet at the county fairgrounds.
Their fourth annual swap meet is Sept. 19, 2015.
Weve had good turnouts at the events and look
forward to continuing this event for years to come. We
had very nice weather at last years swap meet. Were
always looking for new ideas on promoting the club
and the sport of snowmobiling, said Messer.
Sno-Cleats also hosts a landowner and member-appreciation dinner.
Its important to show our appreciation towards
the landowners for allowing the club to have signs out
and maintain trails across private property. We also
like to regularly thank the members who do the trail
signing and maintenance, said Messer.
The 2015 Sno-Cleats appreciation dinner is on
Feb. 5 at the Greenwald Pub.
The clubs website (www.saukcentresnocleats.
com) includes an updated events calendar and trail
conditions map.
Sno-Cleats also donates to various community
causes throughout the year.
Recently we donated to Veterans Ride and to
Nick Keller from Richmond for the Keller Family
Community Foundation, said Messer.
New members can sign up at snocleats@gmail.
com or at the groups website. Meetings are generally
held the first Tuesday of the month at ElmerZ in Sauk
Centre between October and April.
Snowmobiling is something that kids with the
right training and adults of all ages can enjoy. Were
proud to support the activities of snowmobilers in our
area and promote doing it in a safe and responsible
manner, said Messer.

Christmas tradition?
Kami: My favorite Christmas tradition is going to
Church on Christmas Eve
with our kids and then the
chocolate fondue for dessert on Christmas Eve it
takes a lot of time and we
just sit and relax and talk
with the kids. Chad: A
few years ago we started
staying home on Christmas Eve and Christmas
Day instead of traveling
all day to northern Minnesota and spending only
a few hours at each grandparents house. Now we
get to spend a lot of time
with our kids and then go
to the extended family on
the weekends. Kids: We

then play, open a few
more presents, and then
play some more.
What has been the best Christmas gift you have ever received? Why? Kami: One favorite that stands
out is the traditional jewelry, which my dad gave me every year. My mom did the majority of the Christmas shopping, but every year my dad picked out, all by himself, some different type of jewelry earrings,
bracelets or necklaces for his girls. He still does that today even when we are grown up. Another favorite
gift could be when Chad gave me a set of golf clubs for Christmas when we were dating. Chad: I think my
favorite could be when I was about twelve and got downhill skis from my parents. Abby: My favorite gift is
our trip to Captiva Island. Its my favorite because it was the best vacation I have ever been on. Alexa: My
favorite gift is our trip to Captiva Island in Florida last year. Its my favorite because it was really fun going
there and it was a good family trip. Noah: My favorite gift is my batman spinner shooter. Its my favorite
because I like to play with it and I can make batman fly. Nick: My favorite is my chainsaw because I can play
outside and try to cut down trees.

lar Express Song: O Holy Night Plate: divinity
Christmas candy Memory: My favorite Christmas
memory from my childhood is traveling to Bluffton
to visit all my extended family at the town hall on
Christmas Day. We had a potluck with tons of food,
more goodies than you can imagine, and we spent the
day playing with our cousins and singing Christmas
songs. Santa even would show up each year and give
us candy canes. Chad: Movie: The Polar Express
Song: Silent Night Plate: My Grandma Davey always had the best clam chowder soup (now made by
my mom), ham, mashed potatoes and crescent rolls.
Memory: My favorite Christmas memory is from a
few years ago when we had a snowstorm over Christmas. We usually spend a lot of the holiday traveling
to northern Minnesota to visit grandparents/cousinsbut could not go that year due to the snow. So, we
stayed home and played outside in the snow with
Christmas music on the speakers, watched movies
and just spent time together as a family. Abby: Movie: The Polar Express Song: Let it Snow Plate:
Monkey bread on Christmas morning. Memory: A
few years ago when it was snowing really hard on
Christmas and we got to play outside in the snow with
Christmas music playing. Alexa: Movie: Christmas
Under Wraps Song: Winter Wonderland Plate:
Oreo Ball Treats Memory: My favorite memory is
waking up in the morning and walking out and seeing
my stocking full of stuff from Santa and presents under the tree. Then we have to wait for Mom and Dad
to get up. Noah: Movie: The Santa Claus Song:
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Plate: Sugar
cookies with frosting Memory: My favorite thing is
snowmobiling at my Grandma and Grandpas house
with my cousins. Nick: Movie: How the Grinch
Stole Christmas Song: Rudolph the Red Nosed
Reindeer Plate: Cookies and eating all the treats.
Memory: My favorite thing is opening presents with
Mom and Dad.
What does your Christmas Eve and Day routine
consist of? On Christmas Eve, we attend church and
then come home and usually have a nice meal. Then
we have dessert chocolate fondue with lots of fruit/
goodies to dip in chocolate. This is when the kids
get their kid wine (sparkling grape juice) in special
glasses. We then take family pictures and finally sit
down around the tree and each open one gift. By then
its usually pretty late and the kids go to bed. On
Christmas morning, the kids get up early and are usually greeted by a bunch of gifts from Santa Claus. We
have a monkey bread/egg brunch and then sit around
opening up gifts. We then spend the rest of the day
playing outside, watching Christmas movies, drinking hot chocolate and cider, and the kids play with
their gifts. We usually have a nice dinner in the late
afternoon/evening.
As we get closer to the end of the year, what are
you and your family grateful for? Kami: I am
grateful to have a wonderful and healthy family, our
home and great friends who we can always rely on.
Chad: I am grateful for the health of my family and
many close friendships. Abby: I am grateful for my
family, friends and my home. Alexa: I am grateful
for my family and friends. Noah: I am grateful for
my toy bow and arrow and my trucks and my Grandpa and Grandma. Nick: I am grateful for my bike and
snowmobile and Tracy (my daycare mom).

What is your favorite Christmas tradition? We go
to church on Christmas Eve and then we come home
and relax. When we get together with our five children, each of which are married, we meet at church
for Mass and then get together at our house.
What has been the best Christmas gift you have

mulcher. Ken: The kids once got me some cordless
power tools.
What is your favorite Christmas movie, song,
plate for Christmas, memory? Delores: The Home

Ham, scalloped potatoes with mushrooms, dressing
and apple pie. Delores: The same except with banana

the Christmas tree up outside and us boys would always be in the barn doing chores and we would look
through the cracks in the barn to see if Santa had
come and put anything under the trees.
What does your Christmas Eve and Day routine
consist of? We start chores early, go to church and
after church we come home to relax. When the kids

As we get closer to the end of the year, what are
you and your family grateful for? On July 6, I
(Ken) got my left foot crushed by a loader bucket and

on the second day I told Delores the cows gotta go.
Our kids, Steve, Michelle, Melissa, Annette and Angie, along with their spouses and our grandchildren,
who all live within 15 minutes, said no. They made
out a calendar on who would milk morning and night
and helped Delores do all the chores and would stop
by during the day to check up on things. They helped
for two months until school started and then we had
three young fellas help out the last month. During
that time we also had help from family and friends
with fieldwork. Then I was able to start working
back into milking and now my foot is 100 percent.

Lord knows I hate doing dishes by hand so it gets

What does your Christmas Eve and Day routine

been special for Moni Barten throughout her lifetime. Growing up on a farm
a couple miles west of Spring Hill with
her five brothers and three sisters, children of Mike and Theresa (Athmann)
Wander, she remembers things being
very different from the way they are
now.
Christkind (German for the
Christ Child) was the one that brought
our gifts, said Barten, pronouncing
Christkind in German. Gifts in those
days included candy, nuts and other
things.
One year I got a snow suit and I
thought it was the greatest thing, she
said. In general, though, it wasnt like
that.
Since my birthday was two days
after Christmas, I was always praying
that Id get something special, but I
never told anyone, so I never got it,
she said with a smile.
They always had a big tree, which
was set up the day before Christmas,
and Christkind decorated the tree. The
tree was left up long after Christmas,
sometimes until February.

PHOTO SUBMITTED

The Alfred and Moni Barten family on Dec. 25, 1971. Al had been diagnosed with
cancer just weeks earlier and passed away in March 1972. Pictured are (front) Bob;
middle (from left) Moni, Neal, Fred, Randy and Gordon; (back:) Alfred, David, Rose,
Sharon, Nick, John and Marilyn.

We went to church (on Christmas

morning) in the dark, to 5 a.m. Mass.
It was almost like going to Bethlehem.
Someone had to stay home with the
kids. We went with the horseswe always had a bus, like a covered wagon
with runners instead of wheels, she
said.
When they got home, Christkind
had been there, but the gifts were not
under the tree.
We would have all the plates
around the table and thats where our
gifts were, said Barten.

THE HAPPIEST HOLIDAYS

ARE BLUE.

Years later, Moni had met Alfred

Barten at a dance, and the two married
in 1948. Together they had 11 children.
During the years when their kids were
growing up, things changed.
At first, we put up the tree the day
before Christmas, then changed when
everyone else changed, she said. The
tree got put up earlier and St. Nick
came on Dec. 6. Mass went from 5
a.m. Christmas morning to midnight
Christmas Eve. And somewhere along
the line, the Christkind was replaced
with Santa Claus.

Things have not been easy for Barten, but at a few days shy of 90 years
old, she keeps smiling.
The featured photo of her family
was taken on Christmas of 1971. Al
had been diagnosed with cancer on
Dec. 1, and was given two months to
live. He passed away that following
March, 1972, at the age of 48. This
March she will have been alone for 43
years. Looking at the photo, its easy to
see Barten had quite a job ahead of her
to finish parenting this large family by
herself.
From 1968, Alfred and Moni
worked at the Spring Hill Elementary
School doing custodial work.
When Alfred died, the boiler
inspector said you dont need a boilers license (because the furnace had
changed) so I could do it, said Barten.
When the school closed in 1985,
she worked at the Melrose High
School, where she primarily worked
the 3-11 shift. After that it was on to
the Greenwald Post Office for two
years, followed by subbing at the Melrose school for four to five years.
More heartache entered her life in
1990, when one of her grandchildren,
Brian Barten, drowned, followed in
1994 by her son, David (Brians Father) dying in a car accident.
Barten still keeps very busy, saying I often wonder how I had time to
work,
As for Christmas these days, she
says things are different even from the
time her kids grew up.

Now, Advent seems
to be more celebration.
Back then it was anticipation, she said.
Now, in the days of
her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren,
Mass is at 4 p.m. on
Christmas Eve. Trees are
taken down shortly after
Christmas, though Barten still makes sure to
wait until after the Epiphany to take hers down.
Some things, however,
havent changed. She
still does a lot of Christmas baking. And she still
looks forward to getting
her real Christmas tree
every year, carefully
trimming and decorating
it. And her favorite thing
about Christmas hasnt
changed either.
When asked what
that is, she simply said,
Getting to see everyone.

Wolbeck has collection of over 40 feeders

ST. JOSEPH Five

years ago, if you were to
ask Carla Wolbeck about
birds and how to feed
them, she would have
politely directed you to
someone else.
But now, that has all
changed.
After working at
Mills FleetFarm and
the Cold Spring Country Store, she decided
to learn more about bird
feeding.
We always get a lot
of questions about bird
feed, said Wolbeck. I
thought if I knew more
about it, I would be able
to help the customers.

that, said Wolbeck.
Yes, its more money,
but none of it goes to
waste and Ive been getting a better variety of
birds now.
Hummingbirds, in
particular, are birds that
Wolbeck works to attract
to the feeders. The rarely seen species is only
around during the summer months, from May
to September.
This past summer,
I fed the Hummingbirds
Oreos, said Wolbeck.
They like the sweet
taste and will come back
for more.
Indigo Blue Buntings, Tanagers, Finches, Chickadees and Peliated Woodpeckers are
amongst the 15 different
species that arrive during
the summer months for
Wolbecks sweet treats.
On the long summer
days, Wolbeck takes a
lawn chair outside and
watches her birds. Overtime, they become use to
her presence; the Morning Doves will sing and
the Finches will flash
their bright yellow wings
all around Wolbeck, as
she calmly observes her

Ill go outside and

I now have two
pairs of Cardinals that
come quite often during
the winter, said Wolbeck. Ive always loved
Cardinals and their
bright red color.
When Wolbeck first
began attracting these
beautiful types of birds,
many didnt believe it.
No one would believe me when I talked
about all the birds that
I have seen, especially
the Cardinals, said Wolbeck. I started taking
photos so that I could

Wolbeck now uses

If theres one piece

the simplicity and diversity of the hobby.
Throughout

years, Ive learned many

To me, Ive kept everything simple. You dont

The illustration of Christmas Truce: British and German Soldiers Arm-in-Arm

Exchanging Headgear: A Christmas Truce between Opposing Trenches was
originally published in The Illustrated London News on Jan. 9, 1915. This image has
been selected as picture of the day on the English Wikipedia for Dec. 25, 2014.

Stille Nacht! Heilge Nacht!

Alles schlft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute hoch heilige Paar.
Holder Knab im lockigen Haar,
Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh!
Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace

One hundred years ago this Christmas Eve, thousands of men hunched in
their trenches along the Western Front in France, the site of the worst carnage
during World War I. On one side were the Germans; on the other side, the allies,
mostly British and French.
Imagine being in your cold, muddy trench and all of a sudden, instead of
shooting, you hear someone begin to sing Silent Night in German...and then
English.
Hundreds of soldiers wrote letters home to their families about The Christmas Truce of 1914. The following is from Corporal Leon Harris:
This has been the most wonderful Christmas I have ever struck. We were in
the trenches on Christmas Eve, and about 8:30 the ring was almost at a stand
still. Then the Germans started shouting across to us, a happy Christmas and
commenced putting up lots of Christmas trees with hundreds of candles on the
parapets of their trenches. Some of our men met some of theirs half way, and the
ofcers arranged a truce till midnight on Christmas Day. It was extended till
Boxing Day night and we all went out and met each other between the two lines of
trenches, exchanging souvenirs - buttons, tobacco and cigarettes. Several of them
spoke English. Huge res were going all night and both sides sang carols. It was
a wonderful time and the weather was glorious on Christmas Eve and Christmas
Day - frosty and bright with moon and stars at night.
Another soldier, Private M. Rivett, wrote:
This is Christmas and we are having a nice day; quite enjoying ourselves.
Not a shot is being red, so far as we can hear. It is a mutual armistice and our
battalion is out of the trenches for a short spell. I suppose the Germans are quite
as pleased as us to have a quiet day. In fact, it was told us this morning by several
of our ofcers, who had been in the trenches that our men met the Germans half
way between the trenches, exchanged greetings, gave them cigarettes etc and had
quite a friendly meetingTonight we are having a concert round the camp-re,
in fact, they have just started. During the day we had football matches with a new
ball sent by some kind friends. So you see it takes a good lot to upset our men or
make us forget Christmas.
Among other things, the truce allowed soldiers to bury their dead that were
lying in No Mans Land (a distance ranging from 30 feet to a few hundred yards)
between the enemies. They were buried in mass graves, some of the dead having
been there for weeks. In certain places along the Western Front that Christmas,
services were held with enemies side by side bowed in prayer. I cant even fathom the horror these men were going through, with the total casualties during the
war along the 438 miles at well over seven million men. Thats over 16,000 men
for each linear mile over the five years they fought.
Hopefully, the miracle of the Christmas Truce of 1914 will never be forgotten. Theres a wealth of information available about it, and its a powerful story
that needs to be kept alive. In my mind, its proof that no matter what kind of
abominable situations humanity gets itself into, God is still there.
Christmas is a time to remember Hes there for us, too, whatever the situation
we find ourselves in. This year, I wish you your very own Christmas truce in the
battles you face.
If you listen closely, you might hear someone singing Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright.

Keep safety in mind when enjoying darkhouse spearing

After sawing a wide rectangle into

the ice, a person holds a fish spear at
the ready while looking through the
water, past a small decoy meant to lure
northern pike into range. A well-placed
throw results in a pike on the ice and
destined for the frying pan.
Darkhouse spearing has ancient
origins, but the activity may be new
for many. The current season for darkhouse spearing opened Nov. 15 and
runs through Feb. 22.
For those new to spearing, there
are some additional points of safety to
keep in mind while out on the ice, according to the Minnesota Department
of Natural Resources. Once a block of
ice is cut, it can be pushed under the ice
or pulled out onto the surface.

If removed, the ice should be

placed back into the hole and the hole
marked when the spearer removes a
darkhouse.
If the block of ice is pushed underneath the surface, the hole should be
marked, as should any blocks that are
left on top of the ice.
Paul Lundeen, president of the
Minnesota Darkhouse & Angling Association, said the organization stresses
the importance of putting your block of
ice back in and marking that spot with
biodegradable markers, preferably in
each corner of the hole.
Push that block back in the ice
and make sure you mark that hole,
Lundeen said.
Usually, Lundeen said, the practice

of pushing the block of ice under the

surface is easiest because the ice bobs
after being cut free.
Its actually so much easier. Why
lift the block on top of the ice? That
thing is heavy, he said.
The spearing association also
stresses to make sure spearers know
their target, to avoid spearing fish that
arent northern pike.
Just like deer hunting, dont throw
your spear unless youre aware of what
your target is, Lundeen said.
Lundeen also said spearers might
consider passing on the large fish, as
large pike are limited in numbers and
worth conserving. Also, make sure to
pick up any litter from the ice when
leaving, he said.

Overall, Lundeen said, spearing

can be a thrill, just like hunting. And
theres the craft of making decoys
that attract fish, of living the history
of spearing, and of getting kids and
grandkids out on the ice to share in the
fun.
Its just like deer hunting you
can sit there for hours and all of a sudden you can look and theres a deer. Its
just like that with spearing, Lundeen
said.
Statewide, anglers and spearers
can keep three northern pike, and one
of those three can be over 30 inches.
All spearers and anglers should check
for special regulations that may be in
effect for individual waters.

For Small Jobs,

By CAROL MOORMAN
Staff writer
MEIRE GROVE
Daryl Schweigert figures
he has his mother, Helen,
to thank for close to 70
years of music making.
Wed be milking
cows in the barn and mom
and I would sing together. I was probably eight
or nine, he recalls one
recent afternoon sitting
in the rural Meire Grove
home where this 75-yearold man lives with Gloria
Schneider, his long-time
companion.
Gloria gestures like
she is milking a cow, in
an effort to give Daryl
that music-making feeling
once again.
Hes come a long way
from that young boy milking cows and singing, to
the head honcho of classic
country bands. A photo of
one of his bands, Daryl
Layne and the Gold Dust
Trio, sits above a cabinet,
while more music-themed
photos fill a frame hanging on the wall.
When it comes to music, this constant kidder,
on a more serious note,
said, Its a God-given
talent, with Gloria adding, I always tell him its
a gift. Hes blessed with
a beautiful voice and he
should share it.
And hes done just
that since he was a child,
growing up on the farm
of his parents, Helen and
Bill, between Osakis and
Long Prairie.

Daryl Schweigert, 75, has been making music since he

was a young boy and continues today.

His uncle gave him

his first guitar and he
was hooked.
I was infatuated with
music, he said.
As a teenager, his
parents bought him a guitar, ordering it out of the
Sears-Roebuck catalog.
And I taught myself

how to play it, he said.

He never took lessons
and, still today, plays and
sings by ear.
In high school he performed in talent shows.

He met many musicians when he

went to the Twin Cities to live. He put together a four-piece band, calling it Daryl
Layne and the Rhythm Boys. He laughs
when asked why he used the name Daryl Layne instead of Daryl Schweigert,
explaining, Daryl Schweigert doesnt
sound like a country band.
And thats the type of music they
played.
We werent very good, but we
thought we were good, he said.
Daryl calls himself a weekend warrior, making music on the weekend and
working as a salesman during the week,
while also raising a family.
In 1967, during a time when there
were so many 50s bands, he changed the
band name to Daryl Layne and the Gold
Dust Trio, figuring it lent a true country
feeling.
Hes surrounded himself with good
musicians, like Joey Chock, who performed with his band for close to 40 years.
Musicians attract each other, Daryl said, adding. Ive had a lot of good,
talented musicians behind me.
And they dressed the part.
My theory was the band is only as
good as it looks, he said.
Hes made one CD, Memories-Daryl
Layne and the Gold Dust Trio, with band
members Chock, Marilyn Harris and
Dave Nathe. It was recorded in 2006 by
Harmony Centre Studios in Sauk Centre.
In the late 60s, Daryl Layne and the
Gold Dust Trio was one of the first bands
to hit the ballroom circuit.
I played em all, he said.
He rattles off names of ballrooms,
like the New Munich Ballroom, Diamond
Point in Sauk Centre and Bell Creak Garden near Cannon Falls.
If you didnt get to Diamond Point
by 9 p.m., you probably wouldnt find a
place to sit, he said.
For a time he and a friend even
owned a ballroom in Mantorville, calling
it his livelihood.
Dancing was big back then, he
said. Theres nothing like playing when
the dance floor is full.
The music gets better as the floor
fills up, said Gloria, with Daryl laughing
as he adds, And the drinks flow.
It was dancing that first brought Daryl and Gloria together. In 1993, Gloria
was teaching line dancing in the basement
of the Red Carpet in Sauk Centre. Owner Dorothy Petermeier told her there was
this good-looking guy sitting at the bar.
I met him on Sept. 8, 1993, the same
day as my wedding anniversary, said
Gloria, and he just kept coming back to
the Red Carpet.
Glorias husband, Roman, had passed
away in 1989.
At the time, Gloria didnt know Daryl was a musician.
But he was a good dancer, she said.

They have been together ever since.

Daryl figures hes been all over the
state, and beyond, performing. And hes
played for generations.
I played wedding dances for children, whose parents I also played for, he
said.
He quit traveling far and wide to play
in 2006.
But he didnt quit playing and still
hasnt.
He and Gloria travel to Arizona
during winter months where hes performed for events and still organizes jam
sessions. He recalls a chance meeting
with Marty Robbins lead guitar player,
JD Haag, who performed with him.
I asked him if hed help an old farm
boy from Minnesota, said Daryl.
He talks about a young singer he met
in Arizona, Angie Senger.
Holy buckets, this gal can sing, he
said, as Gloria pops one of Sengers CD
in their player and music fills the air of
the farmhouse.
From about April through November,
he plays local gigs, mainly for anniversaries, and every Thursday night from 5 to 8
p.m. at The Country Road American Grill
& Bar in Meire Grove.
They share how the weekly gig at the
Meire Grove bar started in 2009.
Wed go up to Jamies (Klaphake)
bar for buck burger night, said Gloria.
Daryl approached Jamie about possibly playing music on that night and
it stuck, with many regulars coming back
Thursday after Thursday, from all over,
said Gloria. That includes Ron Hoxmier,
who was Johnny Cashs bodyguard, and
now lives in Eden Valley.
Daryl and Mike Madden are usually
the common denominators, with Daryl
rattling off names like Jim Jansky, Dean
Dirkes and Fr. Marv Enneking who have
joined them on stage.
Daryl said making music is a stress
reliever both for him and the people he
is entertaining, although these days he
doesnt have much stress.
He enjoys making people happy,
hamming it up with them.
Sometimes you gotta wear your
boots, it gets so deep, said Gloria.
Its just so satisfying, he said.
He enjoys the human element that
comes with performing in a live band.
You are there for the people, he
said.
And Daryl will be there as long as his
health holds out, his nimble fingers allow
him to play and songs flow freely from his
mouth, much like they did when he was in
the barn so many years ago singing with
his mom.
If somebody would have told me Id
still be playing at 75, when I started at 20,
I would have told them they were crazy,
said Daryl. If I still do it good enough,
Ill keep doing it.

There are a couple other types
but they are not as common. One
uses the active ingredient cholecalciferol to cause kidney failure and
another uses the active ingredient
zinc phosphide to cause the body to
produce toxic phosphine gas in the
gastrointestinal tract. It is very important to know what you are buying and what risks it may pose to
your pets. They are all made to taste
good so the rodents will eat it, which
means it also tastes good to your pet.
Take any possible ingestion, no matter how small, seriously and do not
assume they are fine if they do not
have immediate symptoms. Always
keep the containers and be able to
tell your veterinarian what the active ingredient was in the product
consumed.
With the EPA changes for 2015,
there will be a lot less of the anticoagulant type of rodenticide available
for home use and thus a lot less of
the one type for which we have an
antidote. Anticoagulant types will
still be available for agricultural
use and for commercial pest control
operators but will have many new
restrictions on consumer use, so I
anticipate bromethalin (neurotoxic)
poisonings will become more common. Hopefully there will be a renaissance of the old fashioned trap.

Smere Kuchen
Cottage Cheese Mixture
5 lbs. cottage cheese
1 24 oz. package pitted prunes, cooked in water until mushy,
for top
6-8 eggs, beaten
1 16 oz. tub sour cream
1 cup sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
Mix in large bowl with hands, squeezing out all lumps. Can
add more or less sugar to your taste. You can get this ready while
your dough is raising. Your prunes should be cooked ahead and
you can add about 1/2 to 1 cup apple sauce to prunes. This makes
it easier for spreading on top of cheese and stays nice and soft
when baked.
Sweet Roll Dough
2 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
2 packages quick rise yeast
Measure into large bowl and make a well. Add 2 eggs and
beat in well.
1 1/4 cup water
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup Crisco
Heat until all melted and add to above. Beat well.
Add 3 to 4 cups more flour. Mix with hands to smooth consistency. Let raise in warm place. When raised, cut off pieces (size
of tennis ball) and roll out on floured surface to fit pie tin. Pat in
tin and cut off excess overhang of dough. Makes 12-15 kuchens.
Pour in cottage cheese mixture. Top with prunes, sprinkle with
mixture of nutmeg and sugar. Bake 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes.

Cranberry Crunch
1 cup flour
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup coconut
Small package slivered almonds
3 cans jellied cranberry sauce
1 pint real whipping cream
2 Tbsp. powdered sugar
Mix flour, butter, brown sugar, coconut and almonds all together. Bake on cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes, stirring
often. Cool and break into pieces. Whip cream, adding 2 Tbsp. powdered sugar. Layer in glass bowl: crunch at bottom, slices of cranberry,
whipped cream, crunch on top.

German Potato Salad

Fry three cubed strips bacon with 1 medium-sized onion,
chopped. Add sauce mixture:
1/4 cup sugar
1 Tbsp. butter
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup vinegar
Bring to a boil; thicken with 1 Tbsp. cornstarch softened in a
bit of cold water. Pour over cooked and sliced potatoes. Let set in
warm place, but remember sauce thickens as it cools.
Note: 3-4 medium potatoes for 1 recipe.

Peanut Butter Popcorn

1/2 cups corn syrup
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup peanut butter
2 bags microwave popcorn
Place corn syrup and sugar in kettle. Bring to boil. Add peanut butter and stir until smooth. Take off burner. Microwave 2
bags of popcorn and put in bowl and stir in peanut butter mixture
until popcorn is coated. Put popcorn mixture on a couple of cookie sheets and place in 200-degree oven for 1 hour. Stir every 15
minutes. Cool.
