********** MOTIVATION ***********

Introduction:You can buy employees physical presence in your work place for a certain
time but you can not buy his willingness to work. People may have capacity to work
but may not have desire to work willingly. it is well known that human beings have
great potential but they use only a part of it when working for others. It is the
function of managers to induce employees to work willingly, efficiently, effectively
and enthusiastically and contribute their best to the achievement of the goals of the
organization. This, in short, is motivation,
The term motivation is derived from the word motive which means
An inner state that energises activates or moves and that directs or channels
behavior towards goals.

Definitions:1) Dale Beach:

Motivation can be defined as a willingness to expand energy to achieve
a goal or a reward.
2) W. G. Scott :
Motivation means a process of stimulating people to action to
accomplish desired goals.
Thus, we can say that motivation is a general term applying to the entire
class of drives, desires, needs, wishes and similar forces. When we say that a
manager motivates his subordinates then it means that he does those things
which hopes, satisfy his drives and desires and induce subordinates to act in the
desired manner.

Process of motivation involves five variables:

a.
b.
c.
d.

managers to motivate his subordinates ,

Employees to get motivated.
The situation in which both operate.
The actual work in which behavioral events and consequences are
incorporated.
e. Organization goals and needs toward which behavior is sought to be
directed.

Importance of Motivation

Motivation is an important function of management. To active organization and

individual goals in an economic and efficient manner, motivation is an important
tool in the hands management to direct the behavior of subordinates in the desired
and appropriate direction. This minimizes the waste of human and other resources.

Motivation is necessary/ important due to the following reasons

1) High performance level:
Motivated employees put higher performance as compared to others
employees higher performance leads to increased productivity.
2) Low employee turnover and absenteeism :
A motivated employee hardly remains absent with out a valid
Cause. There fore, problems faced due to high labor tumover and high
absenteeism and avoided. Training becomes more effective. It produces good
result when employees are positively motivated.

3) Acceptance of organizational changes :

It is common trend that employee will resist the change. If organization is
to grow, it should accept that change in a positive way which is a must. As
technology is changing at a fast rate, it is necessary to keep pace with it for the
survival; motivated employees are certainly regarded as change agent. Therefore
they will accept the change easily as compared to the non motivated employees.
