Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, students should be

able to:

1) Interpret phase diagram for ternary diagram

2) Calculate amount of gas & liquid in the system

Ternary Diagram
Represent the equilibrium between the various
phases

that

are

formed

between

three

components, as a function of temperature and

pressure.

Ternary Diagram
The concentration of each of the three components can
be expressed as either wt. % or molar % or mol

fraction.
Sum of the concentration of the three components
must add up to 100%.
The Gibbs Triangle:
- an equilateral triangle on which the pure components
are represented by each corner.
- used to determine the overall composition.

Use of ternary

Analysis of miscible
displacement.
Eg: oil mix with CO2.

Exercise
Determine the compositions and quantities of
equilibrium gas and liquid when 6 lb moles of a
mixture of 50 mole percent methane, 15 mole
percent propane, and 35 mole percent n-pentane
are brought to equilibrium at 160F and 500 psia.

Solution
50 mole percent
methane, 15 mole
percent propane, and
35 mole percent npentane

Solution

Solution

Composition of gas:
Read the value at point 2 ( at
dew point line)
70 mole % methane
15 mole % propane
15 mole% n-pentane
Total = 100 mole %

Solution

Composition of liquid:
Read the value at point 3 ( at
bubble point line)
15 mole % methane
