ADMA-OPCO...

SPLENDID LEGACY
OF GLORIOUS PAST AND

BRIGHT FUTURE

Adding value through the years, ADMA-OPCO ushered

in 2012 with a splendid legacy of glorious past and a
hope for a brighter future.
Over the past 50 years that elapsed since the export
of the companys 1st shipment of crude oil from Umm
Shaif Field, the company has been making great strides,
moving from one success to another until it has carved
a niche in the annals of the energy history as one of the
major oil and gas producers in the world.
The year 2012 is of twofold importance for ADMA-OPCO
as its marks the 50th anniversary of the companys
1st crude oil shipment on the one hand, and acts as
a transitional year for mega expansion projects being
executed by the company in both its existing and new
fields on the other.

HEALTH, SAFETY,
ENVIRONMENT &
QUALITY ASSURANCE
The companys Safety Records speak for themselves.
Our positive and healthy trends across all Key Indicators
including Lost Time Incident, and Total Reportable
Incident Rate are phenomenal and going down in the
right direction.
Over the past few years, ADMA-OPCO scaled new
heights in HSE performance and this was recognized
in many ways.
During the course of the past year, ADMA-OPCO
achieved two feats that were the first in the companys
long history: completing one whole year without a Lost
Time Injury (LTI) and reaching 39 million man-hours
without LTI. ADMA-OPCOs 2011 Lost Time Injury
Frequency Rate (LTIFR) and Total Reportable Injury Rate
(TRIR) were 95% and 81% better compared to the oil
and gas industry benchmarks respectively.

Quoting Chief Executive Officer Ali Rashid Al-Jarwan,

ADMA-OPCO is currently going through a momentous
phase in its history where we are embarking on megaexpansion projects that underscore the status of the
company as a key player in the oil & gas industry. This
expansion creates unlimited opportunities for all our
workforce to effectively contribute to the companys
journey to success.

With the start of the summer months, ADMA-OPCO

launched its yearly Heat Stress Awareness & Prevention
Campaign last month.
Considered an integral part of the companys culture, this
years campaign approach adopted a unique system of
monitoring and assessing heat stress and its associated
work / rest regime as well as hydration protocol.
The system is called TWL (thermal work limit), a new
scientific heat stress management tool to quantify the
work-rest regime via using a friendly communication
tool, flag system, that takes into consideration
area and location factors, environmental factors,
as well as workers factor. This method has been
researched and validated for the gulf region and
adopted by the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi &
Environment Agency Abu Dhabi.
The system is linked to a flag raising process in which
heat stress is monitored periodically across the work
shift via special devices and the results will yell out

the action to be followed. The flags will act as a visual

communication means to employees working at large
worksites. Each raised flag will have its associated
actions to follow.
This initiative was launched first in Musaffah by Senior
Vice President (Drilling-Support) Ahmad S. Al-Suwaidi
and Manager Health, Safety & Environment and Quality
Assurance Omar Al-Shamlan, followed by Das Island.
The next phase will be cascading it to the platforms
and super complexes where public address and
announcement system will be used together with the
Flag System.
The adoption of such an initiative, being scientific in
nature, simple and straight forward, visible and easily
understood to all level of workforce as well as cost
effective, will ensure better control in mitigating heat
stress and raise moral, confidence & sense of belonging
amidst workforce.

An open-discussion session

SCADA CONFERENCE REVIEWS INDUSTRY

CYBER THREATS

The SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition)

Cyber Security Conference was organized recently
in Kuwait to review the latest developments, trends
and research solutions addressing security of the
computers and networks used in SCADA and other
industrial control systems.
Company representatives, Sultan Saeed Al-Alawi, IT
Security Engineer, and Ayman Al-Issa, DOF Cyber
Security Advisor, participated in the event. Al-Issa was
one of the keynote speakers during the conference
and spoke to the press about the significant role
played by SCADA systems in the oil & gas sector and
even at nuclear installations.

The companys delegation to the conference

Industrial control systems have evolved from

traditionally limited systems to highly sophisticated
smart ones that provide highly accurate analytical
data that are likely to help improve the production
process and assist decision-makers reach the right
decisions, said Ayman on the sidelines of the event.

Protecting Business

SYSTEMS & INDUSTRIAL

CRITICAL
INFRASTRUCTURES
from Cyber Attacks

the level of virus outbreaks, stealing data, and system

hacking to reach the level of invading the industrial
control systems and networks. Such might enable
reaching the control systems and taking over the plant
operation systems, increase the pressure in pipelines,
change in field devices parameters, open or close
motorized valves, and many other actions that could
cause safety hazards to people, critical assets, and the
environment.
Companies today are aware that cyber security means
safety, and hence they recognize that the cyber security
must include deploying state-of-the-art defenses and
most importantly increase user awareness to ensure
effective safe practices.
It is very important to understand that attackers need to
succeed in penetrating a single system in a Company,
and then, they can use it to attack the entire network
and systems resulting in compromising other company
resources or systems; Protecting a single PC is as
important as protecting the whole network and systems.
In this article, we will shed light on a few scenarios that
show how unknowingly human negligence can be used
to attack companies even if rigorous cyber security
systems and controls are already in place. We will wrap
up these examples and give tips to our users to help
them avoid falling into the cyber-attack trap.
It is important to understand that receiving an email
from an email address that you already know doesnt
mean that the sender is the person that you know.
Email spamming systems collect legitimate email
addresses by many means and use them to send
spam emails to others.
Users must be cautious when receiving emails with
contents that they are not expecting and report these
to the Company Help Desk for IT Security Engineers to
inspect the email and identify its source.
Example 1: A user receives an email that contains a link
to the internet from a known or unknown sender:

access to the system is by deceiving the user to click

on a link sent to the user through an email. When the
user clicks on the link, he is redirected to a malicious site
that will download a Trojan to the users PC to start the
journey of attacking other computer resources within
the Companys network.
To avoid being a victim of such an attack, users need
to be very cautious when they click on links within the
emails that they receive, unless they are sure that the
email is from a trusted source.
Example 2: The user receives an email with a Portable
Document Format (pdf) file attachment:
Adobe Pdffile format was originally created to allow users
to view documents. Pdffiles can contain other objects
within themselves such as pictures or even other files.
Hackers create Adobe pdf files that contain malicious
codes within the file itself that can be launched when
opening the file or establish a connection with a website
and download a malicious code to the users PC.
To avoid being a victim to such an attack, users must be
careful when opening received pdfattachments in their
emails. Again, unless you are sure that the email is from
a trusted source, be cautious when opening such files.
Example 3: The user uses the Company PC to open his/
her personal email yahoo, google, hotmail, etc.
While many companies underestimate the threat of
allowing the use of personal emails using Company
PCs, opening personal emails from within Company
PCs is one of the major threats. The spam rate with
personal emails is much higher than business emails.
Business emails pass through multiple checks before
they reach the user. When the user opens a personal
email, it doesnt pass through the same level of checks
used by the companys business email system. This
makes opening emails from personal email systems
more risky than opening a business email. Users should
limit opening their personal emails to only when critically
needed and when its source is well known to the receiver.

COMPANYS

ATTACHMENT TO
FLUOR BEARS FRUIT
IT IS AN
OPPORTUNITY FOR
EVERYBODY TO BE
HERE AND YOU GUYS
ARE IN HOUSTON TO
LEARN FROM THE
BEST PEOPLE IN THIS
FIELD.- CEO
As part of its strategy to enhance the competence
development of its employees and get them geared for
the challenges and responsibilities of the future, ADMAOPCO, through the Manpower Development Division,
has attached 11 UAE engineers to leading companies
to Houston, United States of America, and India over
the past period.
Nine of the assigned engineers were attached with
Fluor, USA, to work on the Nasr Full Field Development
Project. The attachment was premised to develop
UAEs expertise in various engineering disciplines and
expose the Competence Assessment Management
System (CAMS) graduates to a higher technical level
by working as members with a leading engineering
and construction company like Fluor, considered one
of the few global companies that can provide largescale engineering, procurement, construction, and
maintenance (EPCM) services.
The disciplines of the Houston-attached engineers, who
spent in USA from four to eight months, ranged from
mechanical, electrical, control, process integrity to civil
engineering. Some of them are still at CAMS and others
are already integrated. The full attachment should end
in November 2012. They spend two months in US and
then come to Abu Dhabi for a two-week leave during
22

which they conduct presentations on the progress of

their work and achievements.
ADMA Magazine spoke to Ahmed Nemr, Ahmed Nazim
Nemer, Civil Engineer, Discipline Engineering Division,
one of the engineers attached in USA. ADMA Engineers
work part of the Fluor team who are entrusted with the
implementation of the Nasr Full Field Development
Project. At the end of the project, inshaalah, we will
have our names on the project itself because we are
effectively contributing with Fluor experts to the best
fulfillment of the project.
AS Chief Executive Officer Ali Rashid Al Jarwan said
when he visited us in Houston: it is an opportunity for
everybody to be here and you guys are here to learn
from the best people in this field. He is completely right
because Fluor is really doing a great job and we are both
learning from them and at the same time have our solid
contribution to the final output of the project.

Advisor in Sugar Land city in the U.S. state of Texas within Houston

The experience we are gaining from our attachment

with Fluor will reflect positively on our performance
at the company when we are back and when we are
entrusted with other projects. It goes without saying that
when you are attached with the best company in the
world in this field, you must have an added value to offer
to your company.
Every week we fill in a form like a report describing how
far we are satisfied and progressing. We send it from
US to Mr. Samir Omar, Manpower Development Advisor,
on how we are contributing to the projectThen Mr.
Samir sends to us his feedback and remarks, providing
us with all necessary advice as required.
I am very satisfied with this good experience. If you want
to learn, you need to be exposed. We are learning from
different expertise in Fluor and I am for sending as many
employees as we can do because this is eventually for
the best interest of the company.

Engineer Ahmed Nemr conducting his presentation

ADMA Magazine also spoke to Adel Abdul Monem AlKindi, Integrity Engineer at Integrity Division.

to come up with real achievement and thank God Ive

managed to attain this goal by designing an equipment
that will be in action once Nasr Field starts working. This
would not have been possible without that attachment
simply because at ADMA we dont design.

Work with Fluor for 6 month has provided me with

experience I would not have gained even in 16 years at
ADMA. My main goal when I joined this attachment was

Surely the company will gain tremendous benefits from

that attachment and ADMA will not find better than those
engineers who have been attached with Fluor to be in

Adel Abdul Monem Al-Kindi

charge of operating Nasr Field in the future thanks to

the great experience they have gained during the period
they spent with Fluor.
I am very lucky to have that attachment through
which we, both integrated engineers and CAMS
undergraduates, are learning a lot, something which
as a matter of course will reflect positively on our
performance when we are back to the company.

Multitasking ability to sketch relevant plans.
Prioritize the work and manage the complex
projects under aggressive timelines.
Proven track record of optimal utilization of

LEARNING NEVER
STOPS ON DAS

I completed my Secondary School in the emirate of

Ras-Al-Khaima. I joined ADMA-OPCO in December
2011. Life on Das Island looks like a beehive of activity:
very active and busy. I wake up early morning and
perform morning prayers and then I take breakfast with
my friends and workmates. At 06:50 we start our daily
learning process at Das Training Center. We reach DTC
at 0700 Hrs sharp and immediately start our training
sessions. The instructor reviews the previous lessons
to refresh our memory. Then he embarks on using a
new chapter of our syllabus usually by Power Point
presentations and explains all details on the board to
make it easy for us to understand. The instructor usually
takes us for site visits to explain the practical aspects of
the lectures, whenever it is necessary. We have intervals
every 1.5 Hrs to refresh ourselves with Tea and Snacks.
Our lunch break is from 1 to 2 pm; we go and take lunch
at the companys restaurant. After the lunch break, we
resume our classes. There are English Language classes
3 times per week conducted by the English Language
Instructor, to improve our English reading, writing and
speaking skils. The class finishes at 1800 Hrs. I usually
spendnearly 2 hrs at the gymnasium daily. This facility
provided by the company is very good and I utilize it to
improve my physical fitness and stay healthy. I return
from gym around 8 p.m., and then I refresh myself with
a shower and take dinner with friends. I study the daily
lessons and go to bed around 11pm. I feel happy and
say Alhamdulillah to have started my professional life in
a place like Das where the learning process never stops.

A new batch of employees have joined the company recently. Senior Management would
like to welcome them all aboard, wishing them all success in their professional endeavors

RAMADAN CHARITABLE

Programme to Kick off

SIGNIFICANCE OF

AL ISRA AND AL MIRAJ

There is no doubt that Al-Isra
(the night journey) followed by
Al-Miraj (the heavenly ascension)
was one of the miracles in the
life of our Prophet Muhammad
(peace and blessings be upon
him). According to the most
accepted view, it happened on
the 27th of Rajab, the seventh
month of the Hijri calendar, in
the tenth year of Muhammads
(PBUH) prophethood.

Reflecting the spirit of religious ascendancy during

the holy month of Ramadan, ADMA-OPCO 2012
Ramadan Activities Programme, as is the case every
year, features a series of charitable activities tailored
to give the employees a chance to get more devoted
to worshipping on the one hand and become more
sensitive to each others feelings on the other during
these sacred days. This years programmes and
activities include a Quran memorization competition,
religious lectures, a daily Iftar Saem programme,
Omrah trip for the needy, along with a variety of
other social and charitable nights and activities. All
employees are being encouraged to contribute to
these activities by way of funding or engaging in them.

RAMADAN MONTH OF
FASTING

Ramadan -a month of obligatory daily fasting in Islam

is the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Daily
fasts begin at dawn and end with sunset. Special
nightly prayers called, Taraweeh prayers are held. The
entire Quran is recited in these prayers in mosques all
around the world. This month provides an opportunity
for Muslims to get closer to God. This is a month when
a Muslim should try to:
32

See not what displeases Allah

Speak no evil
Hear no evil
Do no evil
Look to Allah with fear and hope

O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as

it was prescribed for those before you, that you may
become God-fearing. (The Quran, 2:183)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking
his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven.
Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith
and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins
forgiven. And he who passes Lailat al-Qadr in prayer
with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his
past sins forgiven (Bukhari, Muslim).
Ramadan ends with a day long celebration known as
Eidul-Fitr. Eidul-Fitr begins with a special morning
prayer in grand Mosques and open grounds of towns
and cities of the world. the prayer is attended by men,
women and children with their new or best clothes.
A special charity, known as Zakatul-Fitr is given out
prior to the prayer. The rest of the day is spent in visiting
relatives and friends, giving gifts to children and eating.

It is reported in Hadith literature, that the

Messenger of Allah was carried from the
Sacred Mosque in Makkah to the Farthest
Mosque (Al-Masjid al-Aqsa) in Jerusalem
on a creature called Al-Buraq in the
company of the archangel Gabriel (peace
be upon him). There he led a congregational
prayer of the prophets of God.
Then Gabriel took him to the heavens where he met the
prophets Adam, John, Jesus, Idris, Aaron and Moses
(peace be on them all). In the seventh heaven, he met
Abraham (peace be on him).
He was then brought to the Divine Presence. The details
of this encounter are beautifully detailed in the beginning
of surat An-Najm(52).

PRAYER: GOD-GIVEN GIFT

During this time, Allah ordered for his nation fifty daily
Prayers. But on the Prophets return, he was told by
Prophet Moses (peace be on him) that his followers
could not perform fifty Prayers. Thus, he went back and

eventually it was reduced to five daily Prayers. After this,

the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned
to Makkah on the same night itself.
Therefore, Muslims should be thankful to Allah for this
gift. They should take care of it and never neglect it. It
is the thing that allows the Muslim to communicate with
the creator five times as day.

CELEBRATING THE EVENT

As far as the Muslims are concerned, there is no particular

celebration, fast or prayer to commemorate Al-Isra and
Al-Miraj. But in some places, the Muslims themselves
have started to have commemorative functions, where
the story of the night journey is told in poetry or lectures.
While the Prophet himself did not establish these
practices, there are scholars who maintain that gatherings
meant to remind the Muslims of the importance of
Al-Miraj in the history of Islam, or to remind us of the
importance of love for the Prophet and the significance
of the city of Jerusalem, are permissible.

Its going to be expensive, says Robert Reid, U.S.

travel editor for Lonely Planet travel guides. Its just a
question of how to save a little bit here and there, as
much as you can.

For example, attending a Greco-Roman wrestling final

will be cheaper than the diving final, Reid says.

Its worth it just to be around the Olympics and soak in

the excitement and the flavor of the games, Reid says.
Itll definitely be a memorable experience.

Here Are A Few More Budget-Friendly Tips For Getting

To And Around The Summer Olympics.
- Dont count on discount airfares to London this
summer. Summer is always expensive to the U.K.,
Clampet says. This year will be worse, with high
demand for the games and because airlines are flying
fewer and fuller planes.
- Still, try the usual ways to save - fly at off-peak times
and dates, be flexible and search for the best prices
on comparison websites such as Priceline.com,
Travelocity.com and Momondo.com, Clampet says.
The good news? The London Organizing Committee
of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games recently
released 120,000 extra hotel nights in London. They
were rooms that had been reserved for dignitaries
and athletes.
Many locals also will be renting out their houses and
apartments. Check listings on sites such as HomeAway.
com and Airbnb.com, Reid says. Be wary of scammers.
Deal only with reputable websites, and follow their
payment guidelines.
Staying in commuter hubs outside of London but
close to public transit, such as Cambridge and Oxford,
also might be cheaper, Reid says. And there are five
campsites in the city limits, some near the Olympics,
with prices starting at $25 per night.

Finding local transportation

Getting around London and the Summer Olympics
comes down to two things: an Oyster card and your
feet. The Oyster (transit pass) cuts about 40 percent off
the cost of the Tube and buses, Frommers Clampet
says, referring to the London Underground. You can buy
them in advance; just allow time for shipping. The Tube
is the cheapest, fastest way to get around.
Many sports stadiums and arenas are at the Olympic
Park, though other venues are spread throughout
the city.
Olympic sites have no parking, so youll have to arrive
via one of the many trains, buses, shuttles, taxis and
river ferries servicing the venues. The city has revamped
public transit, cycling routes and pedestrian trails to
connect most parts of the city easily to the Olympic
Park, so it isnt too hard to get around.
Or, you could rent a bike through a Barclays Cycle
Hire (also called Boris Bikes), which works like the selfservice luggage cart kiosks at airports. You can rent a
bike, ride it, and then leave it at the kiosk closest to your
destination. Its free if the trip is less than 30 minutes.
Otherwise, it costs about $24 for three hours.
Eating and getting cash in London
Its easy to spend $25 per person for every meal in
London, but you can eat well for less, Clampet says.
There will be a lot of good street food during the games,
which is great if you dont want to (do it up) on every
meal, he says.
Just make sure you have cash. The U.K. banking system
uses different credit card technology -- their credit cards
are outfitted with microchips and require a PIN, unlike
the vast majority of U.S. cards, which use a magnetic
strip with a signature.
