Two Little Kittens

~Anonymous (circa 1880)

Two little kittens, one stormy night,

Began to quarrel, and then to fight;
One had a mouse, the other had none,
And that's the way the quarrel begun.
"I'll have that mouse," said the biggest cat;
"You'll have that mouse? We'll see about that!"
"I will have that mouse," said the eldest son;
"You shan't have the mouse," said the little one.
I told you before 'twas a stormy night
When these two little kittens began to fight;
The old woman seized her sweeping broom,
And swept the two kittens right out of the room.
The ground was covered with frost and snow,
And the two little kittens had nowhere to go;
So they laid them down on the mat at the door,
While the old woman finished sweeping the floor.
Then they crept in, as quiet as mice,
All wet with the snow, and cold as ice,
For they found it was better, that stormy night,
To lie down and sleep than to quarrel and fight.

Write a reflection on the lesson of about 500 words. In the reflection, discuss the
strengths and weaknesses of the lesson and the changes that you would like to
make. Your discussion should be based on theories and strategies.

This lesson plan was created towards reinforcing listening & reading of pupils. This
lesson is very suitable for pupils with an intermediate knowledge of English. This
level of proficiency is needed as the lesson plan uses poems as its main teaching
aid supported by the use of visual cues in the form of picture puppets. The
combination of both will help the teacher to tweak the pupils interest in learning,
not only the language skills associated with the lesson plan but also gain a deeper
appreciation to poetry & plays. Visual cues used during the lesson will also help the
pupils to relate what is being described in the poem with the scene that is being
visualized by the picture puppets. The colorful puppets will encourage pupils to be
more engaged and interested in the lesson subsequently helping the teacher gouge
pupils prior knowledge during the lesson introduction thus identifying students that
need extra guidance during the class. This non-verbal technique will help the pupils
to comprehend the poem a lot more than only relying on repetitive recitation. Apart
from gaining the confidence to speak in English the pupils will also be able to hear
the correct pronunciation, stress, rhythm and intonation of the words used in the
poem and apply the knowledge during the Q & A exercises that follows.
Simple question and answer slot during the introduction and after the lesson is
designed to give pupils a general idea of what the poem is going to be about based
on their prior knowledge and also test their comprehension of the lesson at the end
of the class. The questions mainly revolve in making the pupils identify key plots
points in the poem and also the characters and places present or described within it
as well. The writing exercise that uses the same Q & A format will reinforce what
they have learned during the class and make it so they can apply their own
understanding of the subject to answer the questions correctly weather it is
individually or in a group. By adding moral values to instill positive attitudes into the
pupils this lesson plan is now complete by having not only verbal lessons but
written ones as well.
Limitations of this lesson plan, pupils with intermediate knowledge of English my
find the lesson easy to follow and comprehend but those with lower comprehension
could find it difficult it is not in the usual simple sentences format. These pupils will
face problems during the lesson as they cannot express their opinion or relate
themselves to the general idea of the poem. It will impact their ability to take part in
individual or group activities. Teachers may need to spend extra time in explaining
the poems part by part to help these pupils understand the lesson. They can also be

given a lot more chances to participate during the lesson to gain confidence and
apply their own understanding to the subject. A simple breakdown of the poem
printout can also be given to all the pupils to help with comprehension as well.
