CBS TV SHOW FEATURES

MAGNAFLUX YOKE
The MAGNAFLUX Y-7 AC/DC
Magnetic Particle Yoke was featured on the
April 3rd episode of CSI: Crime Scene
Investigation. One
of the technical
consultants for the
show is a retired
police officer who
remembered using
a Magnaflux yoke
for an actual investigation. He contacted
MAGNAFLUX through
our
website
at
www.magnaflux.com to
request a Yoke for the show. The show,
titled Precious Metal, unravels the mystery
of a murder victim found in a steel drum
deep in the desert outside Las Vegas. The
drum is returned to the crime lab where

the investigators discover that the serial

numbers have been partially ground away.
In a dramatically filmed scene that prominently features the MAGNAFLUX green logo, the
Y-7 yoke is used by the
CSI investigator Nick
Stokes (George Eads) to
reveal the remnants of the
serial number. He uses this
evidence to track down the
origin of the drum and
that leads them to the
killer. MAGNAFLUX
staff members volunteered
to fly out to Hollywood to offer their
services as technical consultants, but judging from the great job that the CSI crew
did on the scene, our help was not necessary. We hope you had the opportunity to
view this exciting episode.

The Need for Quick Break

Why is there a need for

Quick Break?
MAGNAFLUX uses electricity to properly magnetize parts. Electricity consists of
free electrons (amps) and pressure (volts).
Without voltage, the electrons do not
move; without free electrons, the voltage
has nothing to push.
An AC transformer has a current and voltage going through its primary winding.
This voltage and current creates a magnetic field. The magnetic field induces an
electric field into the secondary winding.
In coil mode MAGNAFLUX units
induce an electric field into the part. This
electrical field magnetizes the part.
If you connect a battery to a transformer,
the only current and voltage out of the
secondary winding is a blip when the battery is first connected and when the battery is disconnected. In order for a tranformer to work, the voltage has to be con-

stantly changing, like an AC signal. This

causes the magnetic field to change. The
changing magnetic field creates a changing (AC signal) electrical field in the secondary winding. If the magnetic field does
not change the electricity stops flowing in
the secondary winding.
When using a MAGNAFLUX unit, the
coil acts as the primary winding of the
transformer and the part under test is the
secondary winding of the transformer. On
a three phase DC machine the output is a
lot like a battery. The 3 Phase DC
Machine coil output is much like a battery. The voltage induced into the part is
relatively small, except for the start and
end of the shot. At the start and end of the
shot the changing voltage creates high currents in the part creating the desirable
magnetic field.
Remember, the induced electrical field
produces the magnetism inside the part.

On many units the amperage is slow to

start and it takes time to bring the unit up
to full desired amperage. Turning off the
unit is much simpler so the time to turn
the current off can be better controlled.
The induced magnetism is a function of
how fast the current and voltage change and
the reactance of the coil (coil size, shape,
turns). Although Quick Break is a function of time it is better to think of it as a
velocity, we need to measure the fall rate of
the amperage (amps/sec).
MAGNAFLUX supplies a Quick Break
Tester which quickly and accurately confirms the function status of "quick break"
circuitry in 3 phase FWDC magnetic particle units. The Quick Break Tester meets
compliance to ASTM E 1444. Contact
your local authorized MAGNAFLUX
Distributor to purchase a Quick Break
Tester.
