M900/M1800 Base Station Controller

Feature Description

31 Multi-Band Function

31.1 Introduction
31.1.1 Application
With the rapid development of GSM, the frequency resources are more and more limited and
become the bottleneck for the further development of GSM. The solution available is to
introduce new frequency bands. The introduction of extended bands of E-GSM and R-GSM is
of great importance to this issue.
The assignment of frequency bands varies from country to country. To meet the needs of
frequency assignment in local areas, the Huawei M900/M1800 BSC supports
PCS1900/GSM850 (not for GSM450 and GSM480) bands. This feature plays an important
role in solving the problem of limited frequency resources.

31.1.2 Availability
The multi-band function has strict requirements for the version of the BSC host software and
the BTS. See Figure 1.1 for details.

Version to Support This Function

BSC Host
Software

All the current versions of the BSC support P-GSM, E-GSM, R-GSM,
and DCS1800.
G3BSC32V300R002C10 and later formal release, supporting PCS1900
and GSM850

BTS

BTS3X (macro BTS): G3BTS32V302R002C05SP01 and later formal

release
Other BTSs: No versions released before Nov. 11, 2004 support
PCS1900 and GSM850. For the versions released after Nov. 11, 2004,
please refer to the released document.

31.1.3 Restrictions
None.

31.2 Function Configuration

31.2.1 Configuring Cells of Different Band Types
The key for configuring cells of different band types is the selection of TRX and its
corresponding absolute radio frequency channel numbers. The following is the operation
procedure for configuring the hybrid cell with P-GSM, E-GSM, and R-GSM bands.

Feature Description

31 Multi-Band Function

Step 1 Add a cell, and set Cell System Type to GSM900, as shown in Figure 1.1.
Figure 1.1 Selecting the system type of the cell

Step 2 Double-click the Available Frequencies pane.

The Select Cell Effective Frequency dialog box is displayed. The GSM 900 cell includes PGSM, E-GSM, and R-GSM frequency bands.
Step 3 Assign the frequency in different bands to the TRX, as shown in Figure 1.1.

Step 4 Select the cell that is configured with TRX. Click TRX Property.
The TRX Property interface is displayed as shown in Figure 1.1.
Figure 1.1 Assigning proper frequency to TRX

The TRX must be assigned with proper absolute radio frequency channel number. The TRX
supporting different band types works normally only when it is assigned with proper absolute
radio frequency channel number. The RTRX can be assigned with any absolute radio
frequency channel number in P-GSM, E-GSM, and R-GSM frequency bands. But the TCH
can be assigned as an R-GSM channel only when the RTRX is assigned with the absolute
radio frequency channel number in R-GSM band.

Select a proper TRX Type for the TRX. If the default TRX type is used, the TRX mutual aid
may not occur.
----End

31.2.2 Modifying Effective Frequency of the TRX

The TRX frequency can be modified during application. The operation procedure is as
follows:
Step 1 Choose Cell > Modify TRX Property in the Dynamic Data Configuration Mode dialog
box.
The Modify TRX Property interface is displayed, as shown in Figure 1.1.
