TEXT: Com 100 Public Speaking, Custom, Lucas, 2012

GOALS:
To help the student increase self-confidence in the communication arena through
research, organization, and delivery of various types of formal presentations.
PHILOSOPHY:
The student must play a major role in his/her own learning experience. As an instructor, I
can only facilitate the educational process, but the most significant learning is acquired
through active involvement and participation by the individual. Attitude is a major factor
in whether or not the student succeeds in any endeavor. This must be positive in nature
toward the total classroom environment: which includes the student him\herself, the other
students, and the professor as well. When attitudes become negative or disruptive, it
affects the entire population within the class. Because of the vital importance of this in a
skills related class such as Public Speaking, any deviation from complete cooperation and
support will have a major impact on each of us and therefore, will not be tolerated.
ATTENDANCE:
We have a great opportunity to learn from one another; it is expected that you will
acquire significant insight through observation of how others present their speeches as
well as from the content of those presentations. Because of this, please be aware that
attendance is mandatory to your success in this class and punctuality is expected
except in rare cases of an emergency. (Over sleeping, running out of gas, not being
prepared does not constitute an emergency.)
There will be a sign-in sheet passed around and you are required to sign in at the
beginning of each class. If you are late, you must sign in at the end of class. To fail to do
so will be recorded as an absence. You will start the quarter with 20 points for
attendance. One absence for a major emergency will be allowed and any subsequent
absences will incur a 10 point deduction from your grade. After three late arrivals, you
will lose two points for each subsequent tardy. To arrive late is very disruptive to the
class and the speakers, and therefore, will not be tolerated on a regular basis. To miss a
class and subsequently sign up later or to have someone else sign in for you could result
in you and the other person being dismissed from the class. Please be responsible and do
not create problems for yourself.

GRADING: Your final grade will be computed on the following:

ACADEMIC HONESTY:
Please be aware that cheating on exams or plagiarizing a speech, in whole or in part will not be
tolerated to any degree whatsoever. Your speeches must be original, researched and developed by
you. All sources cited must be identified. Any form of plagiarizing will result in an F for that
speech and your name will be reported to the Dean of Students which will go on your record.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE:
Please take note of the safety features in and close to your classroom, as well as study the posted
evacuation route. The most direct route of egress may not be the safest because of existence of
roofing tiles or other potentially hazardous conditions. Similarly, running out of the building can
also be dangerous during severe earthquakes. During strong quakes, the recommended response
is to duck, cover, and hold until the shaking stops. Your cooperation during emergencies can
minimize the possibility of injury to yourself and others.
EXAMS:
All chapter reading is the responsibility of the student. As the nature of this class is skills based,
the focus will be on allowing the students to have adequate time in practice and presentation of
the assignments. Due to the nature of this class, lecture time will be severely limited. This
makes it imperative that students prepare yourselves for the exams, and gaining the
theoretical material necessary for developing and presenting their speeches. This will be
accomplished through a concentrated study of the textbook. You will need an 882
scantron and a #2 pencil for the exams.
Each student MUST have your topics approved by me by the date indicated in the course outline.
This will be done by handing in a 3x5 card with your topic and specific purpose. If the cards are
not handed in on time, there will be a 10 point deduction from your grade. If you need to later
change your topic, you may do so with my approval.

FINAL EXAM - Chapters

Reading Assignment:

Exam One - Chapters 7, 9, 11, 15.

Exam Two - Chapters 2, 6, 8.
Exam Three - Chapters 16 and 17.
Your exams will be taken from the text only.
Please read AND STUDY the chapters in detail in order to be prepared for the exams. You
will need to bring a #2 pencil and 882 scantron. The tests will start promptly on the hour
and if you are more than 10 minutes late, it may preclude you from taking the test except
on a make-up basis, which will incur a 10 point penalty.
ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED IN ORDER TO PASS THE CLASS. If
you miss a speech or an exam, you should be ready to make it up the next class day. You
will lose 2 additional points for every class day you are not ready. It is your responsibility
to make an appointment to make up a test. The make up speeches will be worked in as
soon as there is time. If you do not make up a speech or an exam before the day of the
final, you will not pass the class.
REMEMBER...YOU MAY ONLY MISS AND MAKE UP ONE SPEECH - TO MISS A
SECOND ONE WILL CAUSE YOU TO FAIL THE CLASS.
The best way to contact me is via email. When doing this, you MUST include your full
name in the subject line, along with your class hour, not the section number or CRN
number. Prior to emailing me with questions, make sure you have thoroughly read and
studied both the course outline and general reminders as most of your necessary
information will be found in one of those two documents.
If you have any problems or questions not answered in these two documents, please do not
hesitate to contact me during my office hours as I am here to help you. Lets work together
to make this a profitable and fun experience.

GENERAL REMINDERS

Only one make up speech will be allowed with a documented emergency and if you exercise that option, there will be a 10
point penalty. One exam may be made up under the same conditions. If you miss a speech, you much be ready to present the
following day or an additional five points will be deducted with every class day you are late.
You must turn in a preparation outline at the beginning of class on the day you are scheduled to speak.
If you do not have it at that time, please do not ask me to accept it late as I will not be able to do so. To not have your outline
ready will incur a 10 point penalty.
A bibliography must be included in the outline. You must have at least two sources on the informative speech and at least four
sources for the persuasive speech. These must be credible sources, approved by the CSU library. This excludes Wikipedia and
most .com sources as they are no longer deemed credible.
Each speech will have certain time parameters to which you must adhere. If you go under or overtime, there will be a point
penalty which is generally 10 points off if you are under or over by 30-40 seconds or more.
You may not use the chalkboard or audio visual equipment of any kind.
Your speeches must be delivered in an extemporaneous manner which means you should know it well enough to deliver them
without any notes.
Absolutely no form of plagiarizing will be tolerated. More than four words in succession is considered as plagiarizing and you
may not cut and paste any material from any source.
There will be sign up sheets posted on my office door for each round of speeches. You must sign up before the first day of the
speaking round. You may not add numbers on any given day if the day you want is closed. To not sign up prior to the first
speaking day will result in a make up for you and consequently, you will not be able to make up any subsequent speeches.
You may not enter the room after the speeches have started as you will interrupt the speaker. Please wait until you hear the
applause and then you may join the class. PLEASE BE ON TIME.
You must keep your evaluation forms until your final grades are in and you have had a chance to review them
All speeches and exams must be completed in order to pass the class
