Mostofthemajorproblemsfacingthepeopleoftheworldtodayhunger,overpopulation,the
continuingthreatofwar,prejudice,pollution,drugaddictionarepeopleproblemspeoplehave
createdthem,anditwillbepeoplewhomustandwillfindsolutionstothem.Psychology,asthe
scientificstudyofmindandbehavior,willhelpprovidetheanswerstomanyofthesepressingproblems.
Psychologysattempttounderstandthehumanconditiontakesmanyapproaches.Somepsychologists
studybrainchemistryanditsrelationtobehavior,whileothersstudythebehaviorofindividualsin
groups(forexample,inareligiouscult).Stillothersareengagedinprovidingcounselingor
psychotherapytopeoplewhoarementallyillorwhoarehavingdifficultyincopingwiththedemandsof
life.Withafacultyof28menandwomen,allofwhomholddoctoraldegrees,thedepartmentisableto
offeraprogramofstudywhichprovidesasolidfoundationinthegeneralconceptsandmethodsof
psychology,aswellascoursesandprogramsforstudentsinmanyofthemorespecializedareasofthis
largeandexcitingfield.
TheDepartmentofPsychologyhaslimitedthenumberofcreditsrequiredforamajorinpsychologyso
thatstudentsmaydevelopminorsorasecondmajorinanotherdepartment.Thecoreprogramin
generalpsychologyisdesignedtoensurethatallmajorswilldevelopasoundbasicbackgroundin
psychologywhichwillprovideeffectivepreparationforadvancedstudyaswellascontributesignificantly
toaliberaleducation.
Averyimportantkindoflearningtakesplacewhenstudentsbecomepersonallyinvolvedinpsychological
research.Studentsareencouragedtobecomeactiveparticipantsintheirownresearchprojectsorto
cooperatewithafacultymemberinhisorherongoingresearch.Italsoisrecommendedthatstudents
seekparticipationinoneoftheoffcampusfieldexperienceswhichareavailable.
Inadditiontoitsundergraduateofferings,thedepartmentalsooffersthreegraduateprograms,anMSin
experimentalpsychologywithanoptionalspecializationinmeasurement,evaluation,andstatistical
analysis(MESA)anMSinmentalhealthcounselingandanMEdinschoolcounseling.Complete
