Providing herbal first aid at gatherings or "temporary villages" is a rich learning
experience for herbal practitioners. We treat a variety of issues, ranging from standard
first aid colds and cuts to more chronic health concerns. We get the chance to see
herbs in action (when they work and dont work) and have to be creative, working with
what we have on hand. Because these working stations also bring together
practitioners from all over the world, it is a chance to exchange ideas, material medica,
assessment skills, and caregiving techniques.
Below is a list of some issues to consider when planning your first aid station.

Population served (Gender, Age, Special Health Concerns, Special Populations)

Duration of Event (Backstock, Refills)
Season (Weather and associated ailments)
Activities (Type of Event and associated ailments/injuries)
Location (Urban vs. Remote How far are you from higher care or a pharmacy?
What plants are available for use? Are there roads or cell reception?)
Facilities Available (Water, Electricity, Toilets, Sewage, Trash)
Layout of Site or Building (Planning your stations, Ease of Access)
Staffing Concerns (Hours of Operation, Night time Staffing, Skill Set)
Communication (Cell reception, Radio, Written, etc.)
Safety and Sanitation (Cleansing Techniques for Staff, Patients, and Materials;
Protective Equipment such as Masks and Gloves; Proper Disposal of Waste and
Waste Water; etc.)
Supplies & Kittage (Station Setup, Dispensary Supplies, Herbs and other
Medicaments, First Aid Bandaging, Cleansers, Chairs, Beds, etc.)
Tracking Patients and Remedies (Log Sheet, Inventory Lists)
Self Care (How will you make sure your own needs are met?)
Legal Considerations (Transparency, Contracts, Disclaimers, etc.)
