TG-701/702 TERMINAL VOLTAGE DECAY TEST

ON CUT IN OF FIELD SUPPRESSION WINDING

Objective
To check the health of field suppression winding circuit and its functionality.

Background
Logic of gas turbine tripping in case of inadvertent closing of earth isolator on live circuit is
being planned to be implemented during turbine control system up gradation of TG-701 with
Mark VIe. Before implementation of the logic, following data is required
1. Generator field voltage and generator terminal voltage decay rates in case of normal shut
down of turbine and generator.
2. Generator field voltage and generator terminal voltage decay rates in case of turbine and
generator tripping on actuation of lock out relay 86G on generator control panel.
TG-701 & 702 shutdowns were planned Nov 19 & Dec 31, 2014 respectively. Availing these
opportunities, the turbines were tripped manually on generator differential protection 87G1 to
observe generator terminal voltage and field voltage decay rates. Moreover on Jan 1, 2015 TG702 was shutdown at FSNL from Master Control OFF button on MARK V HMI to observe
Generator terminal voltage and field voltage decay rate during normal shutdown.
Field suppression winding is controlled by a contactor 41S which is normally energized. Field
suppression windings are energized when 41S is de-energized due to very serious electrical fault
on the turbo-generator which actuates Lockout Relay 86G/HR. When suppression windings are
energized, the exciter circuit brings the terminal volts to minimum in quickest possible time.
When actuated, the field suppression windings remain in circuit till the drop out of 14HM (2%
speed) and thereafter they are isolated.

Sequence of Activities
1. Load was reduced to 2 MW on Gas Turbine as per SOP.
2. Scope Meter was connected at +ive & -ive terminal on field voltmeter, located on GCP to
record the trend of generator field voltage.(This logging done only for TG-702 Only)
3. Power Quality Analyzer was connected to "Incoming Voltmeter" terminal No. 1 & 2,
located on the GCP front panel door to log the trend of generator terminal voltage.
4. DC Clamp On meter was clamped to wire no. 875 on terminal No. 53 of TBC15 in GAC
panel to observe Field Suppression winding current.

5. AC Clamp meter was clamped to outgoing cable from GAC panel to skid fan motors MK
706 A/B to measure the decrease in current rate to these motors.(Done for TG-702 only)
6. A video camera was used to record the metering on generator control panel front door.
Video Links at the end of report.
7. Tripping signal was given by actuating the Differential protection Relay 87 G-1 which in
turn actuated the Generator lock out relay 86G.
8. Actuation of 86G tripped the turbine and generator simultaneously. Generator Field
Suppression windings are energized with actuation of lockout Relay 86G.
9. The change in terminal voltage & field voltage was observed and recorded accordingly.
(Field Voltage recorded only for TG-702)

Observations
TG-701
Tripping data
1. The TG-701 generator terminal voltage decayed exponentially with time; while the field
voltage was reduced in step from 100 volts to 10 volts in 3 seconds.
2. The current in suppression winding was 12.38 Amps DC as the Field Suppression relay
41S was de-energized, this current reduced to 0 when 14HM (Speed Relay) dropped out
@ 2% speed.
3. After 5 seconds, the generator terminal voltage was reduced to 4100 volts and in 40
seconds the terminal voltage was 78 volts. (Reference: GRAPH No. 1)

TG-702
Tripping data
1. The current drawn by MK 706 A/B motors was 78 amperes while the current through
suppression winding was 0 amperes before tripping.
2. The current in suppression winding was 9.55 Amps DC as the Field Suppression relay
41S was de-energized, this current reduced to 0 when 14HM (Speed Relay) dropped out
@ 2% speed.
3. The current of skid fan motors decreased gradually to 23 ampere in 1 min 30 seconds
then it was maintained at this value for about 40 sec. Later this current gradually
decreases to zero amperes at time 2 min 36 seconds.
4. The TG-702 generator terminal voltage decayed exponentially with time while the field
voltage was reduced from 107 volts to 7 volts in 26 seconds. (Reference: GRAPH 2)
5. After 5 seconds, the generator terminal voltage was reduced to 5500 volts and in 210
seconds the terminal voltage was 48 volts

4. The
T resistance across SW
W4 & SW5 was
w found to be 4.5 & 3.55 ohms respeectively.

5. The Non-Ghost voltage across wire No. 872 & 875 in GCP on running turbine found to
be 22.8VAC & 24.6 VAC for TG701/702 respectively. The load at the time of
measurement of these voltages was 9.3MW & 8 MW on TG 701 & 702 respectively.
Therefore the resistance across Suppression circuit of running TG-701 could not be
measured.
6. The power contact of 41S of TG-702 was found to be healthy

Future Checks:
1. The data of generator terminal voltage drop rate in case of turbine tripping is taken for the
very first time since commissioning of TG-701/702. The normal shutdown voltage decay
rate for TG-701 will be observed in upcoming planned shutdown. This data will be
compared to implement the logic of TG tripping on rack out of incoming breaker.
2. The reason for prolonged voltage decay rate for TG-702 should be asked from GE and
for reference purpose the resistance value across suppression winding of TG701 should
be measured during next shutdown.
