Title of Research Project:

Compressive Behavior of Fly Ash Based Geo-polymer Concrete

MIX DESIGN OF GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE

In the design of geopolymer concrete mix, coarse and fine aggregates together were taken as 75% of
entire mixture by mass. This value is similar to that used in OPC concrete in which it will be in the range of
75% to 80% of the entire mixture by mass. Fine aggregate was taken as 35% by mass of the total
aggregates. From the past literatures it is clear that the average density of fly ash-based geopolymer
concrete is similar to that of OPC concrete (2400 kg/m3). Knowing the density of concrete, the combined
mass of alkaline liquid and fly ash can be derived. By assuming the ratio of alkaline liquid to fly ash, mass
of fly ash and mass of alkaline liquid was found out. We used the ratio of 0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1 to have
varying fly ash and alkaline liquid content for comparison. The sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide ratio by
mass equal to 2 has resulted into the higher compressive strength as compared to the ratio of 2.5 for the
geopolymer concrete hence we used the first aforementioned ratio. Workability of the geopolymer concrete
mix increases with the addition of superplasticiser up to 4% of fly ash by mass. Minor reduction of
compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete is observed when the superplasticiser dosage used is
greater than 2%. Hence, we used the first aforementioned percentage by mass of fly ash. There is a
reduction in compressive strength of 33% for concrete with 20% by mass of fly ash added water as

compared to that of concrete with 10% by mass of fly ash added water. Hence, we used the latter. Table 1
& Table 2 shows the summary of computed mix design in terms of mass and percent by mass of the entire
mixture.
