2015 VESTRY NOMINATIONS BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHESTO ELECT FOUR

Amanda Eller Choi

Occupation: Attorney Federal Agency
Current and Previous Church Committee and Related Activities: Teacher for
Childrens Chapel first to second graders.
Personal Ministry: As the mother of a Middle Schooler and Elementary School
age child, I am very focused on the well being of the Christian Education and youth programs. Those two
programs are two of the primary reasons we joined Pohick. We feel that our children are thriving in a
church where the younger generation is obviously a priority, and I want to help ensure that continues to
be the case. As a related ministry, I feel strongly drawn to help develop deeper ties among the women of
the church, particularly the mothers.

broken in body or spirit, thereby seeking and serving Christ in others.

Current and Previous Church Committee and Related Activities: I have been a
member of Pohick Church my entire life and have had the opportunity to
participate in many activities over the years. Currently, I am a member of the Martha Guild, and I serve at
coffee hour. Over the years, I have lead Childrens Chapel, taught Sunday School, led EYC, served on the
Vestry, and was a member of the Guild of the Christ Child.
Community Participation: I am currently the Springfield District representative to the Fairfax County
Public School Advanced Academic Program Advisory Committee. In the past year, I served on the LBSS
PTSA, mentored a FIRST Robotics Team, led Girl Scout Troop 960, was the publicity chair for the LBSS
Chorus Boosters and chaired the LBSS Baccalaureate Ceremony Committee.
Personal Ministry: Pohick Church has always been an important part of my life. I want to see the church
well maintained and the Parish strong and active in the community. Over the last 25 years, my activities
have been focused on the youth, serving in both Sunday school and EYC. Recently, I have become
interested in community outreach.
Thomas E. Fuzzy Thurston

greeter; coffee hour host; teller; parish hall renovation committee; rector search
committee; seminarian lay committee; stewardship committee; finance
committee; personnel committee.
Community Participation: Potomac Personnel Institute.
Personal Ministry: For 25 years I helped manage Air Force resources (both dollars and personnel). I
learned to read trends and assess when budgetary optimism was warranted and when retrenchment was
appropriate. I have focused my ministry at Pohick on welcoming newcomers as a way of growing the

parish and replenishing its resources (usher, greeter, coffee hour host, parish hall renovation committee)
and on personnel and financial management (teller, rector search committee, seminarian lay committee,
personnel committee and finance committee). I believe our most severe challenge over the next few years
will be the management of our parish resources, and I would like to be a part of meeting that challenge.

Community Participation: Northern Virginia Community College Board; Chairman of the Board;
Community Relations Committee Chair; Vice Chairman of the Board; Northern Virginia Community
College Education Foundation; Prince William County School Board, interim member; Prince William
County Budget Committee.
Personal Ministry: I intend to make the outreach mission the primary work of my personal ministry.
Hopefully we can expand our outreach programs at Pohick to increase both fund-raising and friendraising. My family will also continue personally inviting friends to enjoy fellowship in Christ at Pohick.

Vestry Youth Rep Nominee to be Ratified

Zachary Smith
Occupation: Student
Current and Previous Church Committees and Related Activities: I regularly
attend Sunday church service, Sunday school, and EYC. I have been a part of the
Gunston tutoring program that has been held at the church for the past few years.
Community Participation: I am a part of the Boy Scout troop 994 and am a patrol leader of the troop. As a
scout, I have done LCAC scouting for food every year, and have helped them sort food. I have
participated in the community swim team since I was six. As part of EYC, I have attended two mission
trips and spent two weekends focused on ministering to the homeless
Personal Ministry: I feel I would make an excellent Youth Representative because I connect with the
youth really well. I can go on a mission trip and meet people easily. I also feel that if a young person has a
problem he or she could talk to me, or if he or she had an idea for the vestry, I would be all ears and
willing to take it forward to the vestry.
