Explanations for some of the more difficult questions:

5. Suppose c = 1. Then b = 3 and a = 12. The area of square A is 144, while
the area of square C is 1. So square As area divided by square Cs area is 144.
10. The sum of the angles in the triangle must be 180 . So the third angle in
the triangle measures 180 (3x + 33 ) (7x + 27 ) = 120 10x .
11. Suppose you select the two faces one at a time. You select the first face,
and are left with five possibilities for the second face. Of these, exactly one
is parallel to the face youve already selected. So the probability that the two
faces will be parallel is 51 .
12. Since the three rectangles are congruent, each of them must have one-third
the area of the original square. So each of the three rectangles has an area of 3,
and the product of their areas is 27.
13. Draw a diagram of the rectangle inscribed in the circle. One of the rectangles side lengths is 6 cm, and the diagonal of the rectangle is a diameter of the
circle. So the diagonal of the rectangle measures 10 cm. Using the Pythagorean
Theorem, the other side length of the rectangle is 8 cm, and the rectangles area
is 48 cm2 .
14. Draw a diagram of the triangle on graph paper. One of the sides of the
triangle runs along the y-axis. Treating that side as the base of the triangle,
the triangle has a base of length 5 and a height of 2. So the area of the triangle
is 5.
15. Any given vertex of the decagon is the endpoint of 7 distinct diagonals.
Since there are 10 vertices, one might think there are 70 distinct diagonals. But
that counts each of the diagonals twice. (For example, the diagonal connecting
vertices A and C is counted once as a diagonal ending at A and again as a
diagonal ending at C.) So the actual number of diagonals is 70 2, or 35.
