Chapter 1: My early days in

Ae.S.I.
In this chapter I will be sharing with you how I got into AeSI.Likewise
all other AeSIan how I struggled and how I overcame it.
I had joined The Aeronautical Society of India in JUNE-2006 from GATERAJKOT which is situated in Rajkotat the end of 1st semester I had not
cleared any paper and then I studied hard and any how I passed
ENGINEERING DRAWING AND DESIGN with 53. After that I came to
Chennai
In the beginning I had joined thermodynamics in GIE but I was not at level at
that time that I can understand it and I was in confusion whether to drop it or
notsome time I felt to drop and concentrate on just repeated subjects FLUID
DYNAMICS and STRENGTH OF MATERIAL and sometime I felt that i should
not drop it
It was near the end of the October in 2007 and i was passing through the
Karuneegar street( those studying in GIE-CHENNAI knows very well ) and
suddenly I got a thought in my mind ( in my words its BRAHMGYAN which
changes your life) that how many subjects I had cleared and I got the answer
only one and at the same time another question pop up in the mind how
many subjects are there in course? and i got answer its 20 and i really got
feared that I had took 1 year to clear one paper than when I will complete this
degree? (The answer i got from my mind is 20 years) and that was the
moment which made my eyes open
So next what shall i do? Shall i leave the society? If I leave the society
and go back to Gujarat what my relatives and neighbors will think of me?
and the next thought I got is ,who cares about what people saylogo ka
kaam hai kehna( peoples work is to talk) so the next question pop up was
,what I will do after going to home? The answer was, might be I can try for
6

degree next year which mean June 2008 intake. By this way I felt that I am
going to waste my 2 years after 12th and it will take me more 4 years to
complete the degree in short it will take me 6 years to get my degree if I leave
society
This thought made me to think deeply and I was confident enough that how
much tough might be the AeSI is but I can clear it before 6 years and i have a
chance to complete it in 5 year also
This incidence made all the difference.
Currently I am in 2nd year of M.Tech (aerospace) from IIT Kharagpur and I
give total credit to AeSI, GIE.
If you are at the same position than I just want to say that have time to think
over it & I guaranty you if you follow what your heart says than you will
definitely do it..

Chapter 2: Tip that changed my life

In this chapter I am going to share with you one of the experience which
society taught me in early day when I was in 3rd semesterat that time I had
cleared only one subject ENGINEERING DRAWING AND DESIGN, in the 3rd
semester I had decided to attend only two papers fluid mechanics and
strength of material both were repeated but I was lacking confidence at that
time so i decided to make my position secure in the AeSI.
While I was observing the last year question paper I got to know that almost
65 marks were of repeated questions from previous papers ,which made me
think that at least repeated question should not be missed in the exam they
are the fixed marks which are in our hand which is very important to get 50
marks ..
When you are solving the paper it makes you to understand that how much
concepts you have graspedit makes you to refer different book if arises
some doubts which finally result in the good knowledge of the subjects.
Always remember that MORE YOU SWEAT IN PRACTICE, LESS YOU
BLEED IN THE BATTLE likewise more mistakes make you in the
practice, less marks you will lose in the exam. As a result I had passed
both papers with 69 in fluid mechanics and 76 in strength of material. This had
boosted my confidence to a new level...
Moral is always solving exam paper.

Chapter 3: Tips for BASIC

ELECTRONICS by Chitra Madam
Below gives article was written by Mrs. Chitra Balachandran (Faculty
and principal at GIE-CHENNAI) before 2 years.
Get ready for June 11th exam (basic electronics) .Read this article & off you
go with a bang!!! Full of zeal & confidence. Of course, dont forget a heavy
breakfast before you leave, go ahead! Quickly grab whatever you can from
this write up.
Whether you like it or not, you cannot escape the hardship of exams. But with
some meticulous planning, the exams though may not become stress-free can
at least limit the tension that prevails there in.As requested by one of students,
I present here a wiser method of preparation for the BASIC ELECTRONICS
exam of the AeSI. This has the shortest syllabi as compared to the other
subjects of the AeSI. You dont have to slog all day but just prepare the right
kind of the notes to succeed. Success does not mean securing 50% to pass
but to score high marks thereby increasing your overall percentage.
First of all it is never too late to start but then do not start preparation on 9th
June. I mean get set right away.
Isnt it wise to check the previous years question papers? True. Approach
GIE madam for one if you still havent got!!! Here you are given few tips to
follow.
When you write elaborate notes, check if you are writing enough points for the
marks allotted. Be clear in your expressions and it is always better to refer
book to get the right sentence formation. Marks will be given for neat
diagrams (construction & ckt diagram) and also for the correct characteristic
curves, with proper explanation & suitable equations conclude with the
application.eg. Push pull amp, Oscillation,-ve feedback and its advantage,
SCR
9

For short notes which carry about 5 marks, it is advisable to draw the
diagrams & characteristic curves but reduce the points. Be precise & clear.eg
UJT, OPAMP,INVERTER,DIAC,TRIAC,CHOPPERS etc.
Coming to the numerical problems, BJT biasing problems are very important
.work out several problems on each type until you are confident. Formulae on
FET are a must for working out problems.
Objectives will be easy if you have covered the entire syllabus thoroughly. Go
through all the QP and do your best. Learn all minute details of the devices &
Characteristics curves to attend all the parts of questions.
Easier said than done. But no doubt I assure you that if the tips given are
followed you will become expert in that subject. Work hard and come out in
flying colors.

Chapter 4: TRUE STORY OF MANY

AESI students
Below I am sharing with you conversation with one of my friend who
was struggling to pass papers and lying to his parents.
2 years before I had met one of my very good friend, let for the sake of
convince we call him Mr. X.
Me: hi, how are you..?
X: i am fine and what about u..?
Me: me too fine and how is going your preparation..?
X: its going on buddy but i m little worried about the exam paper..?
Me: which papers you are going to opt now..?
X: p1, p2, s1, s2
Me: its really difficult to deal with p1 and p2. Hey, how many papers you had
passed yet..?
X: 14
me: what is our percentage?
X: 56%
me: your registration year..?
X: S-05-xxxx
me: how is the response from your family..?
X: sorry to say but i have told them i had completed degree but now i m
appearing for improvement of the score...
Me: dont you think that this is wrong, its just going to make the condition
more worst in future... by the way, I have some work, I need to go now.
11

X: bye
me: All the best for preparation.
I think here is the story of the many AeSIs students .I personally had seen
many students who are lying to friends and parents but let us now analysis the
future of the Mr. X.
1: He is having 56 % .it will be very difficult to pass all the 6 papers and to
make 60%.
now for admission for M.Tech in NIT also minimum criteria is 60%.
you can only get stipend on OJT (ON JOB TRAINING) if you have minimum
60 %
minimum criteria for apply in many companies is 60%
so he can neither go for masters nor for job and it seems that all the doors are
close
2: He had cleared 14 papers in 7 years. this means that he must need to pass
6 papers in 1 year as AeSI is giving 8 years to complete the degree after that
he can request for the extension for 1 semester .If he is not able to pass in
that his registration will get cancelled.
3: Finally, How his parents will feel when they come to know that their son had
lied to them.
Solution:
Solution is never to lie with parents .They are the persons who are supporting
us. If my friend had done this before then he would not have to face this
critical condition.

Chapter 5:Dont Escape: A Tip from

Chennai Express

Best way to escape from your problem is to face them.

them.-Shah
Shah Rukh Khan
in CHENNAI EXPRESS.
Yes, its indeed true
I had seen many students in AeSI who drop the subject once they failed in it
and excuse they make is, YAAR BAAR BAAR EK HI EK CHIJ PADHAKE PAK
GAYA HU (i am bored by reading same and same things) but the fact is that
they are escaping from that subject.
In my case whenever i had any subject back i to
took
ok it as a challenge and
prepare in such a way that however hard the exam paper may come, i should
not get less than 50 .at this time you have already basic concept of the subject
.you just have to make it strong and on that u can easily can make the strong
stron
building so u can score in that subject.
In case suppose you had dropped that subject than u have to clear it at the
end of your section A or B .By the time you already had forgotten your
concepts so u need to study them again and grasp it.

13

My many of friends had written single paper for almost 4 to 8 times and they
are now doing well and pursuing their masters from NITs/IITs.
You too can do it but dont escape from papers and face them.

14

Chapter 6: Tip for Exam

Yaar, Exam main kuchh yaad hi nahi aa raha tha.sab kuchh padha hua tha
lekin pata nahi kyu mera dimag pura blank ho gaya tha. (Buddy I had studied
everything but was not able to recall it in exam and my mind got totally blank.)
This is very common response from many of our friends once we came after
exam, might be you also had experienced it .Me too faced the same thing in
the MID SEMESTER exam, even though I was knowing everything, studied
everything but was not able to recall it in exam, was not able to put in a best
way and also did some silly mistakes so in this article I will be sharing with u
some of the tips which might help you to overcome this situation in the next
exam. So here it begins,
1. If you had not studied from the starting and studied in the last 15-20 days
than its having the maximum chances for forgetting as during that time your
aim is to cover the syllabus rather than to gain the concepts thoroughly (you
might be counting also how many pages you have to study) .Also during this
time anxiety is at its peak level so its necessary to minimize anxiety level to
gain maximum concepts.
How to avoid this situation ? Below are the remedies for this.
Best remedy is to study regularly from the starting .2 hour for each subject is
enough you are studying regularly. it will boost your confidence and also help
you to score in the subject.
Convert you short term memory in long term memory this can be done only
by proper revision .will suggest you to Google it.
Research had shown that an average person can concentrate for 50 minutes
only so here what you have to do is to take 10 minutes break after every 50
minutes instead of studying for 3 to 5 hours straightly .in 10 minutes break you
can take deep breathing, can go to washroom, talk to friends, listen to light
music, can view inspiring videos in your smart phone. (I had followed this and
15

it had helped me to extend my study hours for a long time so must

recommendable to all)
Before you start writing your exam take deep breathing it will reduce your
anxiety level so your mind will work without any disruption.
Even if you had studied nicely and gain all the concepts but not able to recall
it than recall is from the beginning .start recalling from the basics, will
eventually leads to where you want to be.
Hope you find this tips useful.

Chapter 7:9 Tips for GATE

GATE exam is one of the big turning point in AeSIians life as it helps to put an
AeSI tag behind and to put a big brand name in your life. Once you become
IITian/NITian, its a life time proud for you and your family.
Success in GATE depends solely on how you spent this last month. It doesnt
matter whether you had studied last 6 months or not unless and until you
cannot revise it in last month.
If you had not started studying for GATE yet and want to score high marks
then i would say that this article is for you.
so here, it starts...
Tip 1: Go through each and every line of the Natarajan Sirs GATE notes
(strictly) .Dont miss a single line or word.
Tip 2 : for maths refer Subhramaniyan sirs GATE notes..he had made it so
simple and at the same time so effective that you dont need to spend on
topics which are not coming in exam.
Tip 3: Make all the formulas on your finger tip.
Tip 4: Make summary of the topics whichever you had studied so that you can
revise all in short span of time.
Tip 5 : Refer all the solved examples from the book(except maths) .DONT GO
FOR UNSOLVED .
Tip 6 : Be Jack of all rather than master of one you need to know basic of
each and every topic from the syllabus..GATE exam is meant to check your
basics not your expertise .so learn basic of every topic ,dont leave a single
one.
Tip 7 : Beta ,question paper dhyan se padhiyojaldbaazi mat karana..( son,
read the question paper carefully, dont make any mistake while reading in
hurry). This is what my mummy used to suggest before i go to write any exam
17

and you might be advised so.This is what mistake i did in last GATE paper. In
one question it mentioned that what instrument is used to calculate
ALTITUDE..? but i read it ALTITUDE.and answer for altitude is
altimeter.and it was there in option..so here i lost 1.33 marks
Tip 8 : jo question aata hai use pahele banao(FIRST SOLVE THE
QUESTION WHICH YOU KNOW) just give try to question 1st which you
already confident about.and that too give it one try only otherwise it may
take considerable time and you may run out of the time. You may find many
students doing same mistake once the exam is completed.
While attempting the paper just give one try .If you cant do it than take the
next .once you have covered whole paper than refer it from starting review the
question which you had already done and try for the question which you were
not able to solve. You may take 2 to 3 rounds .
Tip 9 : strictly follow above eight tips.

18

Chapter 8:5 Tips for M.S.(by research)

interview
How to prepare for M.S. interview?
Once you receive the interview call letter for M.S.(By research ) from IIT
Madras that means 50 % of selection is in your favor ,now to make 50 to 100
% you have to prepare nicely for the interview.
Unless in the case of M.Tech. Where admission solely depends upon your
GATE rank rather than your interview , M.S. is the case where interview
matters the most .So here it goes,
Tip 1: 1st make up your mind , In which specialization you want to work
weather its structure, fluid, propulsion.
Tip 2 : Go through all the basics of the specialization .for example : if you wish
to do MS from thermal than you must be well in 1st law,S.F.E.E.(steady flow
energy equation) and its application,2nd law,3rd law, what is Cp,what is
Cv,unit of Cp.This simple thing matters the most..all they want to know is
your basics is right or not for fluid : study continuity equation, momentum
equation ,energy equation, bernaulis equation ,fluid statics ,kinematics and
dynamics .again MAKE YOUR BASICS CLEAR.
Tip 3 : If you dont know anything which they had asked ,tell them frankly that
you dont know or you had studied but you are not getting it right
now..DONT TRY TO MAKE THEM FOOL BY GIVING RANDOM ANSWER
by this way you are just decreasing your chances of selection .
Tip 4 : Dont feel nervous for the interview .they all will make you friendly by
asking some personal questions .
Tip 5 : In case you get stucked ,while you are giving answer they may help
you by suggesting some things so keep your ears open and listen to each and
every word they are saying attentively .you can also ask for their help .
19

Chapter 9:Biggest lose!!!

Can you say me whats the biggest lose is?
For someone it may be person, for someone it may be money or you can also
argue that time lost is the biggest lose as we cannot get it back.probably
you all might be right in one or another direction but I would say that the
biggest lose to lose our own self
Now the question arises why it happens?
Even though in this era of information technology where everyone can contact
anyone within the fraction of second ,we are getting away from our own self
Why it is so?
I would say that we had stopped talking our own self. We are very busy
knowing about others via newspaper ,fb,whats-app that we hardly aware of
what real we are!!! What we really want? Why we want it?
Can you remember when it was the last time when u sat alone and talked to
your own self?
Thinking about it may give you drastic improvement in life which we cannot
measure now.it only be realize once we start following the answer given by
our heart irrespective of thinking what may other thinks about us.what may
other say about us.
If it is with you than might be below given suggestion can help you.
1 : spend at least 5 minutes in day in silence and think about itmorning time
will be the best for this as after this you have whole day to apply the
suggestion given by your mind.
2 : Ask to you near friends ,relatives ,teacher about it.what you are facing
might be you can get some good suggestion about it after that think about
itand apply which you felt suitable for you.

20

3 : Try to make you better day by daykeeping a diary with you and writing
what you did today will help you to be better tomorrow. It is said that an
average man gets 60000 thoughts per day and once you write your thought
on paper your mind removes other 59999 thoughts away and starts working
on one thought that you have written.
Hope you may find this helpful

21

Chapter 10:Ahead of fear.

,

,
,

Above is one of the Gujarati saying which means , when problem do comes
dont bother .by bothering problem will not get solved. In problem do work and
that work will vanish your problem.
Many times in life it do occurs that we get afraid of the condition ,even though
we had overcome many big problems in past than the present one but then
also our heart gets afraid..
Why is it so.?
Its because we had left trying .its because we are now afraid of failure.
But many times in life small failure leads us to BIG SUCCESS.
The moment we lost the fear of failure ,the way of success starts from there
only.
for example :
Many times we have some phobia for a subject or topic that its too difficult to
understand or i dont like that particular subject or topic and we start
ignoringthis ignoring makes the phobia bigger one as we had feed the
phobiabut at some point of time a situation comes that we must have to
face the subject or topic and once we did it nicely we felt that we would have
done it much earlier
Death comes once but the fear makes a person to die daily.
Finally,
Dar sabako lagata hai lekin dar ke aage jeet hai. ( everyone gets fear but
there is a success ahead of the fear)

Chapter 11:Toppers View for AeSI

Congrats to Mr. Saurav Thapa for getting highest marks in P2 (95) and in
Design (71) .
Below I am posting his story in his own word.
saurav thapa said
i have a great experience to share here. this time i sat for three papers
p1,p2 and design. in my life i never thought of getting above 70 marks in
aesi papers. passing was my main aim. but by my little labour and my
teachers great help i have become able to score 95 in p2. its the all
india highest marks in p2 this session. also i scored 71 in design which
is also the all india highest in that paper. now i am one paper short of
the aesi degree i.e. management and my average % till date is 65%.
what i want to tell is that if you work hard to get anything, there is no
force in this universe that can stop you from propelling forward. Im sure
this is not just my story. everyone has a similar story. please share and
keep others inspired.
Thanks Saurav for sharing this with us.

Chapter 14:Master Tip for Job Hunt

Are there any jobs in Aerospace..?
I did three mistakes in my life .1st I took engineering, 2nd is aeronautical
engineering and last one is AeSI.
This is what one of my readers told me but I do not agree with him.
Let me try to explain it here.In this competitive world its very important to
get start our career from anywhere.
Finding a job is like finding a seat in a crowded bus where everyone wants to
have seat but most of passengers will wait till the next stop come so someone
vacate the seat and he/she capture the seat but you know there are some
smart passengers, even though there is no space to seat they will ask the co
passenger to move and in 90 % case he/she gets succeeded to get a place to
seat.
It just requires a little attempt.
Even if there is no job in any organization, you should try to convince
interviewer that you will add value to their organization .If job is not there than
ask for paid internship, if its also not there than ask for unpaid internship but
somehow manage to have place in the organization .once you are inside its
all up to you how much big you can make out of this.

Chapter 15:Natarajan sirs mind boggling

answer

Natarajan Sir is faculty

culty at ANNA UNIVERSITY and visiting faculty at GIE
Chennai.Below I am sharing with you one of my class experience.
A question asked by student to Natrajan sir after GATE class.
A room is full of oxygen and if i increase the temp of the room, will oxygen get
burned.?
We all know how Natrajan sir makes our doubt clear by giving simple example
.he explains with such an example that we cannot forget for a long time.
Below is his answer..
see I m a teacher ,i cannot teach myself ,I need students to teach similarly
simi
oxygen is oxidizer it cannot be burnt by itself ,it needs fuel to get burnt.

Chapter 16 :Buckle your shoes for a

beautiful career

Writer : Ashiq .TP

Ashiq .TP did his aeronautical engineering in Nehru college, Coimbatore
under Anna university Chennai. He is a motivational speaker and career
consultant. He is a research fellow specialized in the field of uav's and
propulsion systems.
He is the author of book- " In the eye of a teenager". He has published lot of
technical papers in international and national journals and magazines. His
research on electric propulsion systems was recognized by DRDO from Delhi
.He is the CEO and founder of , 'wings for your dreams', an organization to
support student community. He is an active social worker and member
memb at
Rotaract club of unity in Coimbatore
Coimbatore.
He can be reached in his Facebook community page, wings for your dreams
or at his personal mail, ashiqtp1993@gmail.com
Before firing out my experience and blowing out motivational winds, I would
like to say some society talks in my experience in engineering:
Oh you are doing engineering? Outside the state? Wow!!
See that guy, he is doing his studies with airplaneswhat a lucky man yaar !
30

oye..os boode aadhmi ko dhekho his child is studying in Delhi for flying and
repairing airplanes..what a lucky father he is ..
These are some talks I came across when i get to talk with the society.
In olden days there were only very few engineering colleges. But here in
Tamilnadu alone, we have 400+ engineering colleges. And still the condition is
that, not all the institutions can provide Aeronautical engineering
programs. Getting accreditation from the authorities needs lot of
infrastructures. Not just like other programs of engineering, getting equipment
for labs are not so easy. We need original aircraft parts and systems which is
very difficult to get and is very costly too.
So now you are in an institution with all the facilities and accreditation from
respective authorities. You are in a place where most of the students struggle
to get in !
You are in the field of engineering where most of the students dont dare to
take or not get a chance either!
So, first be proud of yourselves for where you stand now!
Aviation and Aeronautical engineering is such a wonderful field that you are
recognized where ever you go. The reason behind this is that, people saw
airplanes only in sky with roaring sound and may be sometimes in movies.
So now you are not in land! Loving the work you do is the first thing you need
to do. If your parents forced you to take this course or if you are not
interested; either, or if you are not ready to develop the interest ..here you
go:]- just buckle your shoes and run away or be ready minded to take over
this life challenge. This book will be really an eye opener for you, read it fully,
you will find a solution to succeed. You will love this field of engg, I awe you !!
There are students who joined the institution without proper guidance. The
first year students feel that they will become a pilot after engineering. Lol, but
by his third or fourth semester, he will really know what he is doing. What I
31

can tell you for first year students is that the first and second semester are
completely a detailed review of your 8th standard to 12th standard subjects.
Engineering is all about physics and mathematics !
Be strong in mathematics. You will know later how you will struggle hard
without proper knowledge in solving problems.
I would like to share my small experience with you. It was a day when my 10th
standard board exam results were published. Some further formalities and
procedures where happening in the school for the admission th 11th standardscience and commerce department.
I studied in a school where every parents will be proud to say that my son is
studying in so and so school. For admitting in science department, (computer
science) the cutoff marks they put for mathematics was 80 marks. I was so
weak in maths that I scored only 79 ! an what they told was, if you got 79, go
to commerce admissions and if you get 80, you can go to science department.
Do that one mark decides our career and dreams ? I never think of giving up
there. I left that school and joined a local school for same science department.
What I did is putting an extra time in studying maths. Later I scored very good
marks in my twelth, than my friends who got 80 from my previous school. How
this happened and how I complete my engineering ? Its only because of my
monomaniac mind that succeeded everywhere.
With the only vision that I should do my engineering and go back to the same
school where the kicked me out, just to show the value of one mark to all
students there !
Coming to the importance of engineering subjects, Elements of
aeronautics is the basic subject for aeronautical engineering, followed by flight
dynamics and stability. without knowing this basic subjects of aeronautics, you
will never reach anywhere in the field as well as studying other subjects is
meaningless too !

32

For Anna university students we have 4 series of mathematics like,

m1.m2.m3.and m4.
M2 and M4 are very easy. M1 and M3 is little difficult. M1 is the basic
mathematics for most of the subject that one should be very thorough in the
subject.
Another important subject that one should know in most of the engineering
fields are Structures. In aeronautics, structures are followed by subjects like,
engineering mechanics, strength of materials, aircraft structures 1 and 2, finite
element methods, vibrations and aero elasticity. The development of the
structure knowledge come up with this order and however each student
should be very thorough in each subject.
Another set of important subject is Aerodynamics, developed by
aerodynamics 1 and 2 followed by computational fluid dynamics.
An important basic theoretical subject is Aero engine maintenance and repair.
It has the ABCD of all the details that you should know in this field. Its a very
important industrial related subject.
Note: Never study a subject by just focusing your semester exam alone,
else you are ruining yourselves.
Exam tips:
1) Never start studying from the very last day to the exam, you will never
pass.
2) Prepare well for your internal exams, so that it will be easy for you to
prepare for sem exams.
3) Always help your friends while you study, teach them whatever you
studied- you will never forget that answers.
4) Always ask your professors to give seminars to be taken from class. Once
he gives you a topic, collect and research the topic whatever you get. Prepare

33

well and take seminar. You will never forget that topic in your life time . I can
guarantee you with my experience.
5) If you are addicted with last minutes preparations, never study blindly all
the topics.
Always have the habit of keeping the syllabus in front of you, while you study.
Omitting one or two topics is ok if you are preparing for the exam in the last
minute.
6) Have the habit of collecting previous year question papers. Collect the last
3 years question papers and if you study the question paper alone, you can
score 70%. Because, you can see that questions are always repeated alike.
7) If you are aiming for good percentage, here is the best tip- always score
90% in your laboratory exams and if you score just 50% for theory subjects,
you will automatically see that you already scored 65% !! so now if you score
60% in theory ? think !
8) Never think of doing malpractices in exam hall by taking bits of papers. You
are ruining yourselves first and you will never get passed for that particular
paper because you will lose you maximum time in exam hall. By the time you
write two bits of copy papers, do study at least one answer.
9) Never waste your time in exam hall. Be very planned to write the answers.
First impression will be the best. So always start the page with the answers
that you know very well.
10) Always revise everything you studied, before you enter the exam hall.
Never study anything new in that moment. You will get confused.
To the arrear students, getting arrears is usual. Never loose hopes. Try to
get passed in the very next attempt itself. Be prepared for next sem. Opt for
studying repeated questions alone, with previous year question papers. keep
extra time for your arrear subjects.
Tips for a good career:
34

Always be different from your friends. Never waste you day when you are in
engineering. Later you will regret for the day you wasted.
Always do research in innovative topics. Develop papers .do analysis.
Whether you fail or not, its a research paper. You will always gain more
knowledge in the related subjects.
Go for many conferences and seminars. Give weightage for international
seminars.
Publish as much as research papers you are possible.
Never involve your friends name or staffs name, if your project is from your
own brain !
Do internships in reputed organizations, if its government organization like
DRDO, ISRO, HAL, that will be a plus point.
Try to do your final year projects in reputed organizations or institutions. It
has got a high value than others doing projects in same institution.
You can always seek the help from your professors, but never get
demotivated.
All the above points are always a plus point in your resume.
So here you go ! I think you now have got the basic idea about Aeronautical
engineering and cleared up related doubts.
Thanks for reading this short article.

Chapter 17:
A BROAD VIEW THROUGH A SMALL
WINDOW:
Stories of few IITians

Rajibul Alam presently doing M.Tech in Aerospace Engineering in IIT

Kharagpur . He did his bachelor in Aerospace Engineering from The
Aeronautical Society of India and B.Sc. in Mathematics from Alagappa
University, Tamil Nadu. He is holding a pilot license and was working for an
MP of LOK SABHA for one year. But his interest in engineering and science
has brought him back here in IIT.
Here I have chosen
sen the title four days back but still pondering with whom I
should start the article. Pritesh himself could be the best example of getting to
an IIT through steadfast dedication. Vanama Venkatesh has his own story of
creating almost a history by recoverin
recovering
g 72 marks (indeed he scored 80 extra
marks) in a single semester to make his percentage 60 and thus fixing his
seat in IIT Kharagpur. We, at our worst dream did not think of Vanama leaving
36

IIT but yet somewhere at a deep corner inside the heart, there was a fear.
After all these were AeSI papers, not jokes. But he has come out with a big
smile.
But will these stories meet the requirement of the book which is intended for
those are seeking jobs, be it after A.M.Ae.S.I. or M.Tech.
And then today evening I have met my hero. I was in a conversation with Mr
Dilip and some other guys. We were totally in funny mood, cracking jokes,
mimicking others and all those silly stuffs. And after sometime we were talking
of some serious issues and thus I came to know his story.
Presently doing M.Tech. in an IIT as a sponsored candidate from a prestigious
government organization, he is a senior scientist there. He joined the
government organization exactly after 8 years of the completion of B.E. in
Mechanical Engineering.
As a bright student of Mechanical Engineering, he could have done software
courses and could have earned 7-8 lakhs package at that time , which had
been done by the most of the engineering graduates of his time.
Instead he gave a run for his passion, that is designing. Initially he worked
somewhere for two years with a mere salary of 350rs per month and then he
started as a contract engineer in HAL ( Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) with a
salary of 3500-5000rs per month, that too under the toughest scientist of our
time. And then finally he reached his destination, getting selected in a post for
which there were seven thousands odd applicants. Today he is a respected
scientist there and here he comes on a sabbatical to complete his Master in
Aerospace Engineering.
And then one more story, even more interesting. Its the story of Bheemesh
Gudelli who is a manager in HAL, I repeat, manager in HAL. And could you
believe that he was a luggage train driver before joining HAL. Soon after the
completion of B.E. from Andhra University, he initially took agriculture as his

37

profession. Two years later he joined the job of train driver and then joined
prestigious HAL.
Here the stories of two true gentleman who dreamt of something and then
realized it. These are the stories of two non AeSIian guys who despite of
having regular B.E. degree, struggled to realize their dream. Salute to them.
N.B. The real name of the first character that is Dilip is kept anonymous on
his request.

Chapter 18 : Unite Together

Writer : Rahul Verma

Mr Rahul Verma is an AeSI graduate .Currently working in Banglore. He is
having more than 6 years experience of teaching.
As in the last edition of this magazine Our Chitra maam said in her message
that The society students have to shape their minds in such a way so that
they can cop up with the peer pressure as well as parental pressure, which
means they have to be academically as well as emotionally balanced. This is
a very important topic so I want to continue to talk at this.
Definitely society
iety students are facing peer pressure in many directions such
as clearing papers, maintaining 60%, home tuition, preparation for gate etcetc
etc, which is not possible without patience and emotional balance.
So the question comes here how to cop up with the pressure coming from
these situations? How to prepare ourselves so that our effort give fruits and
we can clear papers as well we have time to enjoy too which is must to
maintain our mental balance.
This era is of technological advancement, so why not to u
use
se technology and
better ideas to handle our problems? I know about common problems of our
society students that Ive listed them here and also suggesting few ideas, I
think that can be helpful for the students:
39

1) Lacking of fundamentals:
Most of the students are weak in fundamentals because of what they find
themselves unable to analyze the results and reasons properly, which
definitely affects their result at semester end and their knowledge too.
I want to share a story:
A long time ago there was a woodcutter he was working hard from morning to
evening to collect the dry wood from the jungle, he was working in the same
company from last 10 years but never got promoted even once. One day a
new boy was appointed for the same job. Only after a year he got promotion.
The man was shocked to know this and ran to the manager and asked him
why he was not given promotion even after his 10 years devoted service. The
manager told him politely Every day that boy is cutting twice the woods as
you. The man was surprised and decided to work much harder than ever to
beat him. Next day he woke up 4 oclock in the morning and was cutting till he
felled with tiredness but finally found he had cut no more woods than the
usual.
Next day he met the boy to know the secret behind it. The boy said I sharpen
my axe for first two hours before I start to cut the woods the story ends here.
So the point here is the tool that we are using here to clear our subjects is
sharpen enough or not?
So my idea to solve this problem is that there should be a separate class that
newcomers and weak students must join where they can be taught only
fundamentals of basic physics and mathematics those are common to our
syllabus.
With that one should take care of food and health and take the healthy
breakfast in morning.
2)We should help each other and should have unity among all the students:

40

In our course most of the students are hardworking. So why not to share our
hard work with each other? So for this my idea is to divide all students of a
class into a no. of groups each of 5-6 students who will sit together in the
class always. And one of them should be a group leader who has already
written the subject and have enough idea about it (for this he must be given
some concession in fees).
Now each single group should target to master at a particular topic/chapter
(say in one month) in which they solve various types of derivation and
problems also question paper questions. Each single student in the group will
do the same job and then they should discuss the points and problems
encountered and share their experience with other students of the group.
They should take care that everyone in the group understood the things
clearly.
Then they should be allowed to discuss with each other when that particular
topic is discussed in the class. Before the chapter begins in class the
corresponding group should present their work to the teacher for making sure
what theyve learnt is correct from all aspects.
In this way we can improve our performance and why not to do this? Just
think if you would be in a regular college would you be able to do this? If we
are in correspondence course and we have freedom then why not to utilize it
and do such a job that we could never be able to do it in a regular course. If
this idea is executed then Im enough confident that it can give big results.
And automatically this method will also prepare them for various interviews
(like MS, M.Tech. etc.).
3) Discussion:
To explain the importance of it Ive one more story:
Once there were four blind men who were invited to observe an elephant.
They got different- different parts of its body. And when asked about their

41

experience one who got its trunk said its like a snake, other one who got the
tail, said its like a broomstick and one who got the leg said its like a pillar.
Our situation is also similar. For Example if we have to study about a
hexagon. We see its different-different projections (like rectangle, plane
hexagon etc.) and we think what we saw is correct. But when we sit together
to discuss about it then only we realize the reality that it was a 3 dimensional
hexagon.
A very good idea to utilize advance technology for this purpose is to create
face book groups for various subjects where we can clear our doubts today
and even after years when new students will come to study this subject. (You
can see and join my such a group Aerodynamics by clicking the hyperlink:
http://www.facebook.com/groups/354661017903376)
4) Financial problems:
Most of the students are not good financially so taking a home tuition can be a
good option for them. But if they are lagging behind in basics and
fundamentals then it can be a difficult task. So my idea of separate class of
fundamentals surely is helpful in this way too. Then theyll have lesser time for
their study for what my idea given above in second point will be helpful. (For
this also a Facebook group can be created so that can be introduced to the
teachers (our society students) and school students parents to make
available the classes without any agent easily).
5) Time management:
Our Natarajan sir usually says in his class Count every day how many hours
you study every day. If you are not spending 50% of the total available time
then how you can say that you are a student? what he says has a strong
logic behind. If we analyze every day (how many hours we study sincerely
)/(how many hours are awake) and keep an eye over our performance after
few days you will find yourself worrying about your wasted time and in next
few days youll be utilizing your most of the time more efficiently.
42

6) Proper revision:
Revision is very important, at the same time whole time cannot be wasted
every day for revising the text and notes. So collect all the formulae, graphs
and conclusions on chart/cards in minimum possible words by using
diagrams, symbols, and signs not only to reduce words but also the time to
revise it frequently. Every time when you will revise it, many new points will
click you, so make sure that you leave enough space to add new points.
Finally Ill say you should not study so hard so that it makes you tired or make
your study boring. You should find enough time to refresh yourself at
weekends or the days when you are free but periodically.
Wishing you all the best!
