TheForensicandCrimeSceneToolSet(FACTS)isasimplestraightforwardguidetoassistofficerswith
properCrimeSceneManagement,Documentation,andEvidenceCollection.

TheproceduresandstepsidentifiedinFACTShavebeenreviewedandvettedthroughtheNational
ForensicSciencesTechnologyCenter.Theyarenotintendedtobeallinclusivebuttoserveasa
foundationforeachagencytobuildaquickreferenceguideforofficers.TheAuthoringSystemallows
eachagencytomodifypolicies,proceduresandstepstomeettheagencysindividualneeds.

TofunctiononanXPcomputer,FACTSrequirestheMicrosoft.NetFramework2.0orlaterandMicrosoft
SQLServer2005Expresstofunction.BothoftheseareincludedintheXPinstallationpackage.The
installerwillcheckyourcomputerfortheexistenceofthesetwoapplicationsandiftheyarenot
installed,itwillinstallthem.Iftheyarealreadyinstalled,theinstallerwillskipautomaticallytoinstalling
theFACTSapplication.

DownloadInstructions

TodownloadtheFACTSclickoneitherthefilenameorthegreendownloadbutton.Itisrecommended
thatyousavethefiletoyourDesktopasitiseasiertolocatethefileonceyouarereadytoinstallit.

Installationprocedures:

Note:IfyouhavedownloadedboththeFACTSSetup.zipandtheFACTSAdminSetup,youneedtoinstall
theFACTSapplicationfirst.

Thefirststepistouncompressthefilesyouhavedownloaded.FindthefileFACTSSetup.ziponyour
Desktopandrightclickonit.


Thiswillopendialogueboxsimilartotheonebelow.Selectwhereyouwanttheextractedfilestobe
placed.AgainwerecommendextractingthemtoyourDesktop.ClickExtract.

Ifascreenshowingtheextractedfilesdoesnotopenautomatically,locatetheuncompressedfileson
yourDesktopanddoubleclickonittoopenthem.Locatethesetup.exefileanddoubleclickittobegin
installation.

Installing.NetFrameworkandSQLServer2005ExpressforWindowsXP

OncomputersrunningWindowsXP,theLicenseAgreementscreenforMicrosoft.NetFramework2.0
willopen.ClickAccept.ThenextboxtoopenwillbetheLicenseAgreementboxforMicrosoftSQL
Server2005Express.ClickAccept.

Fromthispointprocessisfairlyautomated.Dependingonthespeedofyourcomputertheinstallation
processfor.NetandSQLServercantakeupto1530minutes.OncecompletetheFACTSSetupWizard
boxwillopen.

ClickNextontheSetupWizardscreen.

ClickNextonthefollowingthreescreenaccptingthedefaultsettings.

OncetheInstallationCompletescreenappears,clickClose.Thereshouldnowbeanicononyour
DesktopfortheFACTSapplication.DoubleclickonittolaunchFACTS.

Thiswillopenthefollowingscreen.TheFACTS.mdffileshouldbethedefaultselectionintheFilename
box.BecertainFACTS.mdfistheselectedfile,andthenclickOpen

Thefollowingscreenwillconfirmyouhavesuccessfullylinkedtheapplicationtothedatabase.ClickOK
andtheFACTSapplicationwillopenandbereadyforuse.


ClickonManagingandSearchingtheScene.ThefirsttimeFACTSopensitmaytakeafewmoments.

Thefollowingscreenwillappearandyouarereadytostart.


IfyouaregoingtoinstalltheFACTSAuthoringSystem,closeFACTSatthispoint.Youcanaccomplish
thisbyclickingonExitortheredX.YoumustcloseFACTSpriortoinstallingtheAuthoringSystem.

InstallingtheFACTSAuthoringSystem

ToinstalltheAuthoringSystem,first,iftheFACTSapplicationisrunning,closeit.IfFACTSisrunning
whenyouattempttoinstalltheAuthoringSystem,youwillnotbeabletosuccessfullylinktothe
FACTS.mdfdatabase.

TheinstallationofFACTSAuthoringSystemismuchthesameasinstallationoftheFACTSapplication
itself.BrowsetothelocationwhereyousavedtheFACTSAdminSetup.zipfile.Extractthefilesandclick
ontheSetup.exefile.

Since.NetandSQLServerhavealreadybeeninstalled,theFACTSAdminSetupinstallershouldproceed
directlytotheFACTSAdminSetupWizard.

StepthroughtheinstallationjustliketheprocessforFACTSincludinglinkingtothedatabase.

Atthispoint,bothFACTSandtheFACTSAuthoringSystemshouldbereadyforuse.AsthisisaBeta
release,wedonotwarrantitascompletelyfreeofbugs.Ifyouexperienceanybugs,functionality
issues,orhavesuggestionsonhowtoimprovetheapplication,pleasecontactus.
