I. Introduction
A. Statement of the Problem
I need more time! is a common complaint of students today. Perhaps we feel
overloaded, and we often have to work late just to hit our deadlines. Or maybe days
seem to go from one crisis to another, and this is stressful and tiring. We spend a lot of
time doing unnecessary activities and then well wish to have more time, realizing only
the essence of it when its already late. Many of us know that we could be managing
our time more effectively, but it can be difficult to identify the mistakes that we're
making, and to know how we could improve. We dont notice how and when we
waste our time. Our mind focuses that we still have more time to spend throughout the
day even in reality it is not. The sad part is, a huge number of students are like this, has
poor skills on managing their time. Only few know how to manage time effectively. Are
you a student like this? Doing your projects on the last minute? Making homework
before the teacher comes? A lot of students undergo the same feeling and it is not
good news. But, if youre thinking its too late and tiring to change, well, think again,
there are lots of different easy ways to improve your time management skills. We all
have the same amount of time in the day. It all comes down to how you choose to
spend yours.

B. Definition of Terms

D. Hypothesis
There is small percentage of students in Congressional National High School who
can manage their time effectively. While there is a bigger percentage of students who
still need improvement in managing their time.
Time-Wasting is a bad habit and it only makes our life stressful but we can still
change this by following some simple tips and ways in managing time.

E. Scope and Limitations

The scope is where you list what you are doing. While the limitation is where you
set the boundaries and you list something explicitly that you are not doing because
they are outside the bounds of the project.
The coverage of the study is only for the students of Congressional National High
School. This will not cover other students studying on other high schools.
F. Significance of the Study
Time is a major source for a student. There is so much to be done and almost
everyone wishes to have more time to spare. So this study will serve as an eye opener
to all the students who are not realizing the true essence of time because they always
think that theres still plenty of it to spend. This will also gain students some tips and
knowledge about managing time effectively.
II. Body
A. Background of the Study
A.1 Ways Students Waste their Time
1. lack of time management - you may lack time management, which makes
your day full of useless activities, like picking up on useless phone calls, checking

facebook, twitter, .etc. unconditionally, keep being in college till late, and any useless
activity, this will sure makes you return back home late, rush to sleep and postponed
your homework and studying till week end, and when week end comes you do
nothing from what you postponed which end up having time management problem.
2. Clinging to careless friends - clinging to less caring friends about their studies -which
don't talk about studies and even don't study- makes you careless too, clinging to
careless friends is a waste of time as you can brainstorm, learn your studies while you
are on the road and more with less caring friends.
3. Not managing your lectures schedules - You may be all day out because you didn't
manage your lectures schedules, as you have lecture at 10am and another at 5pm
which makes it difficult for you to return home early which will have bad effect on you
and your studies, so you should manage you schedules to finish early, and if for
coincidence you have time between two lectures you can study in it or give a session
about past lectures for students if you are into social activities.
4. Having no time for home - all of the previous points may not make you have time to
study at home, or you return home at 7pm and think that you don't have time for
studying so you go hang out to meet some friends, but this is a waste of time too, you
should have some time for yourself at home to study in it.

5. Wasting time in transportation - You may spend an hour or more in transportation

without any use, you can spend it studying , or brainstorm with some of your friends in
what you have taken at the lectures.
A2. Reasons why Students Waste their Time
1) You think giving less effort feels better.
Its like exercising. Your mentality is that if you conserve your energy, you will feel
better. It's like you don't want to give in to the point of exercising! You have to give
notice about this and kick it up to giving 100 percent. Jumping actually feels better
than trying to keep your feet on the floor during aerobics. All of a sudden, you will
realize youre way more out of breath; you even may need to take an occasional
break, but undeniably, you will feel proud and happy. You have just made your
workout more efficient, more fun and more empowering (so maybe we could spend
less time). The high from endorphins and pushing ourselves also lasts far beyond the
workout.
This has universal implications. Think of times when you gave 100 percent
to something. You probably resisted at first and then some higher voice kicked in, or
some urgency (like a due date looming or a wedding gown to fit into) and suddenly

you became bionic. Well, it turns out you can press the "bionic button" yourself,
any time, if you want. Today . Regarding any "to do" you have, even if it's laundry. It
will make you faster, smarter and more fun.
2) You think it's not your job.
Youre upset to find that you waste mental energy denying, avoiding or justifying not
getting to certain tasks, like thinking through something or cleaning up something. You
tell yourself someone else could do it better, or I'd be enabling someone else's
dependency if you did it, or it's just not your job. All of these are code for "brat attack."
The truth is, if it's "talking to me," it's probably mine to handle. It doesn't mean you can't
delegate it, but you have to actually do that. The coaching: For all "to dos" that cross
your path, boldly claim them as yours (and plan to accomplish them) or boldly and
clearly delegate them. Either way, it is more efficient than discussing it with yourself or
others ad nasueum.
3) You don't like to ask for help.
Playing martyr often feels better in the moment than actually being powerful
and effective. It keeps you feeling comfortable to be stressed, overwhelmed and
mired in details. If you asked for help, then youd have to be clear, direct, lead, be

strategic and think bigger. Hard . Scary . (You=Chicken.) If you asked for help,
then you wouldn't look like you had it all together. If you asked for help, then I wouldn't
get credit for doing everything myself. (You=Brat.)
I bet you have some other similarly sneaky, dark reasons for not asking for help,
but you'll never accomplish everything you want to without a team. You need to learn
to ask for help. You waste a lot of time doing things that people around you should be
doing or could be doing, that might even be good for them to practice. So, start
thinking of chores you can give the kids and more responsibilities you can give to your
staff. Some of you even need a promise to make three requests a day. It's fun to find
out how people like to help.
4) You don't admit when you are on a break.
Because you like to look busy, important or put upon, you can't admit when you
are taking breaks. Yes, surfing the Internet at work is a break, social networking (unless
totally connected to work) is a break, staring off into space, talking with your mother,
texting, listening to music as you drive, are all breaks. It's not that we shouldn't do these
things, it's just that we don't relate to them as breaks. When we deny we take breaks,
we get to be more stressed, and some of us are addicted to our stress. Feeling out of
control makes us very inefficient.

What if you had to commit to and design your breaks and give THEM 100
percent attention and purpose? And of course, you'd put the same commitment and
design into your work time. This would take all the stress away, all the drama out of
time management. It's terrifically grounding to know you can expect a break, give it to
yourself, enjoy it and then go back to work with 100 percent gusto. Your parents may
not have taught you this (though religions have tried), but I believe it is true: You need
breaks and you need to fully break. Join me in this theory: The better you are at
breaking, the better you will be at work. Instead of wasting time on many meandering,
bratty, entitled, unplanned breaks, design fewer, shorter, more mature and richer
ones.

5) Drama takes time.

When you deny how much time something requires and then have to do it at
the last minute, you aren't as sharp or efficient. When you involve other people, but
don't express your needs clearly, you create confusion that takes time to resolve. It's so
important to learn from these mistakes and put structures in for correcting yourself. I
have a promise to prepare for events more than 24 hours in advance. That way, I save

10

energy I would have spent stressing about being unprepared and have a clear
head so that I prepare efficiently. Also, like the first example of exercise above, the
pride I feel from preparing in advance (versus rushed at the end or winging it) gives
me energy and focus for the rest of the day. How can you avoid drama in your life?
A3. Effects of Time-wasting
1.) Procrastination
Poor time management skills inevitably lead to procrastination. Procrastination is
putting off important or necessary work until the very last minute. Usually, when work is
put off until the last minute, it is not as well done as it would have been if you devoted
more time to it. Procrastination usually leads to poor productivity when you do not
complete tasks in a satisfactory manner.
2.) Habitual Lateness
Another effect of poor time management skills is habitual lateness. People who
do not plan their use of time properly usually have a difficult time being on time to
appointments or turning in work at the scheduled due date. This habitual lateness can
also negatively affect their productivity and give them a reputation of being less
serious or lazy even when that is not the case.

11

3.) Overextension
Poor time management also leads to people overextending themselves, which
is a problem that occurs when they take on too much work and do not allocate
enough time in which to complete it. People who overextend themselves have a
difficult time delegating tasks and figuring out what is a good use of their time. Since
they are not aware of how much time they need to complete a task, they also tend
not to know when they are taking on too much work and setting themselves up for
failure or frustration.
A4. Disadvantages of Time-Wasting
1.) Poor Multi-tasking Skills
Unlike the prehistoric hunter whose task was to slay the beast and bring home
the meat ---supposedly a reason why men are worse multi-taskers than women -modern life obliges everyone to fulfill many tasks in a single day. These tasks may range
from professional to family needs, such as paying the bills and taking the kids to a
show. The ability to multi-task depends on the ability to divide and allocate the waking
hours according to the importance of the task. In addition, it is necessary to
concentrate on the task at hand and ignore distractions.

12

2.) A Negative Outlook

When combined, the disadvantages of poor time management result in chronic
dissatisfaction with personal and family life. Chronic stress, procrastination and failure
to achieve goals add up to a negative outlook on life. Nobody likes to hang around
someone who is negative and stressed out all the time. While a poor time manager
often complains about being swamped with work, those around him find him irritating,
which inevitably leads to misunderstanding and conflict.
3.) A Stressful Life
A major disadvantage of poor time management is its effects on stress levels. It
leads to the dissatisfaction of not having worked hard and wasted time. Hemingway
put it eloquently in "A Moveable Feast" -- "and already I missed not working and I felt
the death loneliness that comes at the end of every day that is wasted in your life."
Furthermore, people with inadequate time management skills can't make sufficient
time to spend with family and children. A vicious cycle is set: a stressful family and a
stressful professional life feed on each other.
4.) Addicted to Procrastination
Putting things off, claiming to work better under pressure, lack of motivation and
missing deadlines are ominous signs of procrastination. Because humans are built to

13

seek instant gratification, it takes strength and determination to overcome the urge to
procrastinate. A major disadvantage of procrastinating at work is that people bring
their office home with them to make up for the lost time. As a consequence, there is
insufficient interactions between family members who are too busy for the minor, yet
essential, pleasures of family life.

A5. Solutions of Time-wasting

High school can be frustrating. This is the time of your life that you're preparing yourself
in the real world. So how do you manage your time doing all of your current activities
without being overly stressed?
1.) Sort your life as a teenager.
Are friends important to be around at this time? Do you find yourself on the
internet a lot? Are you someone who goes to the library to study in a quiet
environment? Are your parents around to assist you or prefer to ask for teachers' help.
2.) Prioritize your weekly schedule as a student.
Any educational/academic studies must come first, then extra curriculum
activities, and then social life. Friends will want to hang out with you on the weekends,

14

but they will understand if you explain to them that you need to study or catch up on
college-related work.
3.) List the exact due dates for events, projects, essays, and other homework.
This will greatly help you to alert you when things need to be done by. Next, sort
extra-curricular activities. Any activity dealing with scholarships should be placed
before the Elective or After School ones. Then, input non-educational events, such as
babysitting, miscellaneous jobs, etc, with team events, such as sports, coming first.
Finally, treat yourself for a night out with friends.
4 .) Set a time limit on how long you study for each class.
Don't go overboard on one subject and forget that you have several others to
catch up on before going to bed. Also, don't rush through studying; take your time
and concentrate. You may want to set an alarm clock at a certain hour, so when it
rings, go to another subject, and reset the alarm.
5.) Get at least 6-9 hours of sleep.
If you have more or less sleep than you should have, you may start lacking in
your coursework and become lazy because of the urge or want to sleep.

15

6.) Try to take showers before going to school.

You'll be more refreshed, alert, and relaxed as you start the day. Night showers
are sometimes "missed" if you have your face covered in books and realize that it's
time to go to sleep. This is also a start of procrastination.
7.) Go over your scholarship essays and college applications with your parents.
It's always a positive action to get parents involved in students' lives by sharing
opinions about futures and careers. If this is not possible, share it with a school
counselor. Not only that they will give their opinions, but they have the ability to search
what college classes or majors is within your preferred goal.
8.) Think of how non-educational activities are affecting your schedule.
If you are babysitting, compromise with the mother on set days and times that
goes around your academic life. If you cannot commit to your studies because of
football practice, then you must take action. When something gets in the way, you
need to drop it, even if it's temporarily.
9.) Don't neglect your health.
Just because you're short of time doesn't mean you should live on junk food. Try
to get your fruits and vegetables every day. Remember to exercise at least 30 minutes
a day. Doing these things will support mental, physical and emotional function.
16

10.) Try to have a fixed timetable.

A timetable will help you to be organize and aware of your everyday schedule.
This will also help you to conserve and lessen non-important activities.

manages their time good and effectively.

III. Conclusion
A. Concluding Statement
As many of us are painfully aware, time is a valuable but limited resource that
we never seem to have enough of. In the increasingly hectic and fast-paced world in
which we live, there is a pressing need to learn how to manage time as efficiently as
possible. This article presents a brief overview of why you need to plan, prioritize, and
organize your time more efficiently.
To develop good time management skills is to embark on a journey taken by
many people in the past. This journey is simply following a path of proven principles
that will help us gain control of our time. It is a journey that can begin only after a
person realizes the need to use time more efficiently. Your time can be capably
managed by planning, prioritizing, organizing and knowing how to effectively deal
with competing activities. First, planning ahead is a key component to managing your
time. Carefully look at every activity that you will need to do in the week ahead. Next,

18

prioritize in ranking order the items that are most urgent or have a deadline for
completion. Finally, Organize your activities by scheduling each one in your daily
planner, calendar, or personal digital assistant (PDA). By actually scheduling the things
you need to do in your calendar, you have in effect reserved a block of time to do
these things, and you will be more likely to get them done than if you had not
scheduled them.
Time management is an art in itself that includes arranging, organizing,
scheduling and budgeting time. This helps us become more productive and efficient
at work, school, and all other activities. When it comes to learning about how to
manage time more effectively, you will find many self-help books, articles, and other
written material on the topic of time management. In addition to written material,
there are many time management classes, workshops and seminars specifically
designed to equip people with time management tools. With a plethora of information
available, there is really no good reason not to educate oneself in the fundamentals
of time management.
In conclusion, we have seen that time management can be accomplished by
planning, prioritizing, and organizing your activities. The list of people who can benefit
from better time management is a long one, and includes students, teachers, factory
workers, managers, business owners, artists, musicians, contractors, engineers, clergy,

19

and countless others. The fact is, nearly everyone can benefit from learning the
principles and techniques of how to be better stewards of time.

B. Recommendations
There are lots of solutions to solve time-wasting. But the simplest one is having
discipline to yourself. I therefore also recommend reading books like, Mark Fritz The
Truth About Getting Things Done, this looks like a more accessible dip in, dip out book
with 42 truths about getting things done, with each one explained over 2 pages ; the
free ebook by Mark McGuinness: Time Management for Creative People and other
literatures about the importance of time.
