LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND GM

WELCOME MAVERICKS FANS!
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the historic sixth season
of Missouri Mavericks hockey. Historic because of the new adventure that
awaits the Mavs for the 2014-15 season!
This season comes with great excitement as the Mavs have joined the ECHL,
the Premier AA hockey league in North America, and are eager to showcase
the best fans in the hockey world to new faces in new places.
Last season came with great accomplishment as the organization was
rewarded with its fourth consecutive Franchise of the Year honor and on the
ice, secured a franchise record 44 wins and the CHLs Governors Cup for the
most regular season points in the league (90 points).
But as we turn the page and look forward to new rivalries, new challenges and a new leader in our new
head coach, former NHL star Richard Matvichuk, we are gracious and humbled to have all of the Orange
Army by our side joining us in the quest for the Mavericks first Championship.
We strive to give you the best entertainment experience coupled with a successful franchise that you are
proud to support with unmatched character and community presence.
We look forward to a memorable, competitive and exciting season and thank you for your support!

Go Mavs,
Brent Thiessen
President and General Manager

Player Profile:
Sebastien Thinel
By Bill Althaus
Bill.althaus@examiner.net
Someday, Missouri Mavericks
forward Sebastien Thinel is going
to sit back and embrace his
brilliant career.
But right now, all he is concerned
with is finding a way to help his
team get on a winning streak.
Thinel scored his 999th and
1,000th career points in a Dec. 30,
2014, 3-2 overtime loss at Wichita.
He followed that performance
with his 1,001st career point in
a 5-4 loss to the Thunder at the
Independence Events Center.
The 1,000th point puck is
somewhere in my bag in the locker
room, Thinel said. When you
think about it, 1,000 points are a
lot of points.
But the team is struggling and
all I can think about is how to help
us win a few games in a row. Its
just so frustrating to go out and
play hard and not have anything
to show for it.
He paused for a moment, and
added, Now is not the right time
to talk about milestones. Now
is the time to find a way to win
some games.
Its comments like that make
Thinel the Mavericks captain for
the fourth year in a row. Earlier this
season, he wore the captains C on
his sweater, but when the team
struggled, first-year coach Richard
Matvichuk took each captain and
associate captain letters off all
players jerseys wanting to make
a statement.
I wanted to see who the real
captain was, Matvichuk said. I
wanted to see who the captain was
on the ice and in the clubhouse. And
Sebbie earned that C on his jersey.
We are so proud to have him as a
part of this team and we want him
to be a part of this team for a long,
long time. He and [his wife] Ashley
and their boys mean so much to
this team and our community. We
are fortunate to have a guy who
never takes a shift off, never takes
a night off.
Thinel is in his fourth season with

11

Sebastien Thinel 2014 Missouri Mavericks

the Mavericks has tallied 85 goals
and 215 assists for 298 points. The
St. Jerome, Quebec native claimed
the Central Hockey League MVP
award twice during his tenure in
the CHL, and will be remembered
as second in all-time CHL assists
(609 assists) and third in all-time
CHL points (919 points).
When I was with Allen [as an
assistant coach] we hated to play
against Sebastien because he is
one of those players who make
everyone else on the ice that much
better, Matvichuk said. He sees
the ice so well. If a teammate is
open, he is going to put the puck
right on his stick.
Thinel, who is usually assisting
on a goal instead of scoring, said
he recalls his first pro goal like it
happened yesterday.
I actually remember my first
goal, Thinel said, who has been a
pro since 2003. I was playing for
Odessa and we were playing San
Angelo and I scored a goal in my
first pro game, Thinel said, smiling
at the memory. That was such a
long time ago.
But I love the game and you
know how much I want to help
this team win a championship. I
thought we had the team to get it

done last year, and it didnt happen

[when the Mavericks brought the
best regular-season record into
the playoffs only to lose to No. 8
seed Arizona].
This year, we have struggled
more than I thought we would. We
have a lot of new players, but we
have so much talent. I know we are
going to get it together, we just
have to. Matti is a great coach and
were a much better team than our
record indicates.
Once we get on a winning streak
and get up among the top four
teams in the division, we will be fine.
Thinel takes that optimistic
approach with him off the ice,
as he and his family now call
Independence home.
I love playing here, he said,
our family calls Independence
our home and we have met so
many wonderful people. This is
home, and I hope it is our home
for a long time.

5-hole - The 5-hole is the area between a goalies legs. The term 5-hole comes from the
five open areas on net that arent covered by a goaltender. Holes one and two are above
the goalies shoulders and three and four are on the outside of the goaltenders leg pads.
This is the most difficult area to score on a goaltender, especially with the abundance of
butterfly style goaltenders in todays game.
Backcheck/Forecheck - Backchecking is a hustle play. It happens when a forward is trailing
a play and skates back into the defensive zone to support the defenders when the opposing
team is moving into the attacking zone. A good backcheck can disrupt scoring chances by
opposing teams and create odd-man rushes going the other way. Forechecking, similar
to a full court press in basketball, is when one or more forwards aggressively pressure the
opposing team in their defensive zone. Often seen on plays where the puck is loose in the
corner, a forecheck can spring offensive opportunities and can lead to goals.

Blind pass - A blind pass is hockeys version of the no-look pass, where a player uses his
sixth sense on the ice to surprise a defender and attempt a pass to an open teammate
without looking at said teammate. It takes a special kind of player to properly execute a
blind pass, as these risky plays can often result in a turnover.
Blue Lines - The pair of one-foot wide blue lines which extend across the ice at a
distance of 60 feet from each goal. These lines break up the ice into attacking, neutral and
defending zones.
Blocker - A key part of the Goalies equipment. It is the glove that goes on the hand that
holds the stick.

Blue liner - Another word for defenseman.

Body Check - Use of the body on an opponent. It is legal when the opponent has
possession of the puck or was the last player to have touched it.
Box - A defensive alignment (similar to the diamond) often used by a team defending
against a power play.
Breakout - The key to a good offense is a good breakout. The breakout starts in the
defensive zone, with forwards and defensemen moving in set patterns in an attempt to
move the puck into the neutral zone without turning the puck over to the other team.
Successful breakouts can spring odd-man rushes or even breakaways if the attacking team
is aggressively forechecking.
Breezers Hockey pants.
Butt-ending - To hit an opponent with the end of the stick farthest from the blade. It is
illegal and calls for a penalty.
Butterfly/Hybrid/Stand-up goaltenders - The renaissance of the goaltending position
happened in the early-1990s with the invention of the butterfly position and is now used
by nearly every goaltender in pro hockey. The butterfly position requires quick hands from
the goaltender, as the style requires the goalie to kneel with their legs splayed out to
the side when facing any shot. This allows the goaltender to take away the lower part of
the net from the shooter and better control rebounds. In recent years, some goaltenders
have adopted a hybrid style, where the goaltender only uses the butterfly position when
facing a low shot and remaining upright for extended periods of time, using their upper
body to stop high shots and control rebounds with their chest and arms.
Catcher - For the goalie, this is a glove (which looks like a fancy first-basemans mitt)

that goes on the non-stick hand.
