PLAYOFFS
The Missouri Mavericks will compete in the Central Division of the ECHL for their 2014-15 campaign, battling their way
towards spot in the 2015 Kelly Cup Playoffs. The Central Division is comprised of the seven (7) ECHL expansion teams
including the Allen Americans, Brampton Beast, Rapid City Rush, Quad City Mallards, Tulsa Oilers, Wichita Thunder, and
of course the Missouri Mavericks.
Playoff Format:
The top four teams in each division during the regular season will qualify for the 2015 Kelly Cup Playoffs. All four
rounds of the playoffs will be played in a best-of-seven format.
The first two rounds of the playoffs will be played entirely within the division with the division winner meeting the
fourth-place finisher and the second-place finisher meeting the team that finished in third place in the Division
Semifinals.
The Division Finals will pit the winner of each series against each other. The winner of the North Division Finals will
meet the winner of the East Division Finals in the Eastern Conference Finals while the winner of the Central Division
will meet the winner of the Pacific Division Finals in the Western Conference Finals.
The 2015 Kelly Cup Finals will see the Eastern Conference champion take on the Western Conference champion.

Player Profile:
Sebastien Thinel
By Bill Althaus
Bill.althaus@examiner.net
Someday, Missouri Mavericks
forward Sebastien Thinel is going
to sit back and embrace his
brilliant career.
But right now, all he is concerned
with is finding a way to help his
team get on a winning streak.
Thinel scored his 999th and
1,000th career points in a Dec. 30,
2014, 3-2 overtime loss at Wichita.
He followed that performance
with his 1,001st career point in
a 5-4 loss to the Thunder at the
Independence Events Center.
The 1,000th point puck is
somewhere in my bag in the locker
room, Thinel said. When you
think about it, 1,000 points are a
lot of points.
But the team is struggling and
all I can think about is how to help
us win a few games in a row. Its
just so frustrating to go out and
play hard and not have anything
to show for it.
He paused for a moment, and
added, Now is not the right time
to talk about milestones. Now
is the time to find a way to win
some games.
Its comments like that make
Thinel the Mavericks captain for
the fourth year in a row. Earlier this
season, he wore the captains C on
his sweater, but when the team
struggled, first-year coach Richard
Matvichuk took each captain and
associate captain letters off all
players jerseys wanting to make
a statement.
I wanted to see who the real
captain was, Matvichuk said. I
wanted to see who the captain was
on the ice and in the clubhouse. And
Sebbie earned that C on his jersey.
We are so proud to have him as a
part of this team and we want him
to be a part of this team for a long,
long time. He and [his wife] Ashley
and their boys mean so much to
this team and our community. We
are fortunate to have a guy who
never takes a shift off, never takes
a night off.
Thinel is in his fourth season with

5-hole - The 5-hole is the area between a goalies legs. The term 5-hole comes from the
five open areas on net that arent covered by a goaltender. Holes one and two are above
the goalies shoulders and three and four are on the outside of the goaltenders leg pads.
This is the most difficult area to score on a goaltender, especially with the abundance of
butterfly style goaltenders in todays game.
Backcheck/Forecheck - Backchecking is a hustle play. It happens when a forward is trailing
a play and skates back into the defensive zone to support the defenders when the opposing
team is moving into the attacking zone. A good backcheck can disrupt scoring chances by
opposing teams and create odd-man rushes going the other way. Forechecking, similar
to a full court press in basketball, is when one or more forwards aggressively pressure the
opposing team in their defensive zone. Often seen on plays where the puck is loose in the
corner, a forecheck can spring offensive opportunities and can lead to goals.
Barn Hockey Rink/Arena.
Between the Pipes In the net.
Biscuit A Puck.
Blind pass - A blind pass is hockeys version of the no-look pass, where a player uses his
sixth sense on the ice to surprise a defender and attempt a pass to an open teammate
without looking at said teammate. It takes a special kind of player to properly execute a
blind pass, as these risky plays can often result in a turnover.
Blue Lines - The pair of one-foot wide blue lines which extend across the ice at a
distance of 60 feet from each goal. These lines break up the ice into attacking, neutral and
defending zones.
Blocker - A key part of the Goalies equipment. It is the glove that goes on the hand that
holds the stick.
