Writing fiction:
T1 to investigate the styles and voices of traditional story language - collect examples, e.g. story openings; scene
openers, e.g. Now when ..., A long time ago..., list, compare and use in own writing;
T6: to plan main points as a structure for story writing, considering how to capture points in a few words that can be
elaborated on later; discuss different methods of planning.
T7: to describe and sequence key events in a variety of ways, e.g. By listing, charting, mapping, making simple
storyboards.
T9 to write a story plan for own myth, fable or traditional tale, using story theme from reading but substituting different
characters or changing the setting;
T10 to write alternative sequels to traditional stories using the same characters and settings, identifying typical
phrases and expressions from story and using these to help structure the writing.

Demonstrate Story Making to whole class and explain its function


as an alternative to writing a structure for story writing.

35 minutes

Main activities
group work

Explain to pupils that, in groups, they are going to plan their own
story based on a traditional story. Some groups will use Story
Making to build story scene; choosing setting, characters and
props and print out finished story scene. Point out online
dictionary bookmark for checking spelling, definition etc.
Remainder of pupils will use paper and pen to structure story
using traditional methods to record main points, structure etc.

work in progress within group. Selected pupils to

Future work:

Pupils to write extended stories based on this lessons work, using either printed out story scenes or work recorded
in books. In future lesson groups to swop so all use Story Making to structure and plan a story. Pupils can then
compare methods used.
