The magazine looks completely different from the publication you have grown
accustomed to over the years. The redesign achieves a clean, sophisticated,
modern look that we think will appeal to readers and advertisers. While it is a very
contemporary design, it still conveys the fundamental seriousness of Southeast Asia
Building as a trade magazine of the building industry covering architecture, interior
design, landscape architecture and facility management.

SOUTHEAST ASIA BUILDING is published bi-monthly by:

The magazine has come a long way since then and during this time, kept pace
with the ever-changing trends of the building industry. This growth would never
have been possible without the constant and committed effort and support of
many industry colleagues, readers, advertisers and contributors who were actively
involved with the magazine over the years.
The new look, now offers more content on the wider issues affecting the development
of the building and construction industry sector such as sustainable architecture
and energy efficiency. New editorial contents include an Export Country Focus
which is a section devoted to exporters of building materials to Southeast Asia. The
product showcase has also been expanded to offer readers more information on the
products, services and technology available in the market.

A Spraypoint is a circular play area, designed to be spotlight of fun. It is a place where people gather to play, cool

parks, plazas, hotels and any place where families gather. It offers exciting interactive play experiences, visual beauty
and a refreshing ambiance.
Spraypoint was particularly designed to offer a water experience that allows participants to come into contact with
water in their street clothes. Light mists and small directed water streams allow everyone to enjoy the fun, cool down,
and yet stay relatively dry. This aspect makes Spraypoint ideal for public spaces where people may not be in
bathing suits such as parks, plazas, zoos and amusement parks.

Dubais ETA Star Property Developers presents two million Dirham

donation to habitat
Dubai, UAE - ETA Star Property Developers, a real estate company based in the United Arab Emirates,
recently presented its donation of two million dirham (about US$544,650) in the first year of a threeyear partnership with Habitat for Humanity. The contribution, which came from ETA Stars Homes
for the Homeless campaign, will help Habitat to build homes with families in need in India, Pakistan,
Bangladesh and Ethiopia. The campaign aims to donate a percentage of the total sales from ETA
Star and its business partners during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan every September for
three years. ETA Stars partners are Dubai Lifestyle City, Homes r Us and Star Cement.

Rick Hathaway, Asia-Pacific Vice President, Habitat for Humanity International, received
the check in a ceremony held recently in Dubai. He said, We are very thankful to ETA Star and its
partners for their involvement and contribution. This donation would go a long way in providing
a shelter to people who are struggling to make ends meet without a roof over their head. We
hope initiatives such as this would set an example for other corporate houses and be a catalyst in
the development of impoverished communities.

Abid Junaid, executive director of ETA Star, said, We are convinced that our initiative will
bring in a positive change for a number of homeless families. We have found a dependable and
honorable partner in Habitat for Humanity. n

MVRDV wins competition near

Seoul, South Korea

Seoul, South Korea The Daewoo Consortium

and the municipality of Gwanggyo announced
the MVRDV concept design for a dense city
centre winner of the developers competition
for the future new town of Gwanggyo,
located 35 kilometres south of the Korean
capital Seoul. The plan consists of a series of
overgrown hill shaped buildings with great
programmatic diversity, aiming for high
urban density and encouragement of further
developments around this so-called Power
Centre, one of the envisioned two centres
of the future new town.

Since the beginning of the millennium
local nodes with a high density concentration
of mixed programme are used in Korean
town planning. These nodes consist of a mix
of public, retail, culture, housing, offices and
leisure generating life in new metropolitan
areas and encouraging further developments
around them: the Power Centre strategy.
The Gwanggyo Power Centre will consist of
200,000 square metres housing, 48,000 square
metres offices, 200,000 square metres mix
10

Southeast Asia Building JAN-FEB 2009

of culture, retail, leisure and education and

200,000 square metres parking.

This divers programme has different
needs for phasing, positioning and size. To
facilitate this all elements are designed as
rings. By pushing these rings outwards, every
part of the programme receives a terrace for
outdoor life. Plantations around the terraces
with a floor to floor circulation system store
water and irrigate the plants.

The roofs of these hills and the terraces
are planted with box hedges creating a strong,
recognizable, cohesive park. This vertical park
will improve the climate and ventilation,
reduce energy and water usage. As a result
a series of overgrown green hills appear in
the landscape. The site is surrounded by a
beautiful lake and forested hills, the design
aims to create a landscape on top of the new
programme that enlarges the green qualities
and that links the surrounding parks by turning
the site into a park. n

BEX Asia 2009 to be held

alongside inaugural
International Green Building
Conference (IGBC)
Singapore BEX Asia, Southeast Asias
leading building exhibition, organised by
Reed Exhibitions, will now be held alongside
the inaugural International Green Building
Conference (IGBC) organised by the Building
and Construction Authority (BCA).

The three-day IGBC conference will
focus on green issues concerning the industry
today with emphasis on green building
technologies and green building designs.

The highlight of the conference is the

Green Mark eco-trips specially arranged for

conference participants to see live examples
of green buildings. The Zero Energy Building
at the BCA Academy, which has started
construction in October 2008, will be one of the
showcases during the Green Mark eco-trips. To
complement the IGBC Conference, BCA will
partner with the private and public sector to
create a Green Pavilion at BEX Asia. The pavilion
will showcase green projects, services and
products.

Commented Mr Tan Tian Chong,
Director of Technology Development Division,
BCA, Since the introduction of the BCA Green
Mark Scheme in 2005, BCA has been actively
focusing on green building issues. We have
been working on the idea of having an
International Green Building Conference for
several months. We see synergy in organising
this event together with BEX Asia, as the
regional building events theme on green and
sustainability is in line with BCAs IGBCs focus.

This partnership will mean that BEX
Asias event dates will be re-aligned, as the
exhibition will now be scheduled to take
place from 28-30 October 2009 at Suntec
Singapore.

With SIAs presence, BEX Asia will
complement SIAs own ArchiFest event, which
focuses on promoting education, awareness
and excellence in the Architecture and Design
community, as well as showcase some of the
finest works of art, interior and design available
in the current industrys talent pool.

Said Mr Tai Lee Siang, President of
SIA, The industry is seeing a lot of synergy
as architecture and design takes on a more
informed approach and responsibility in the
Built Environment, where Green focus is a key
concern and integrated within the roles of
architecture, interior, design and landscape.
Collectively, these different aspects make up
the development of todays built environment.
I believe the collaborations paves the way for
BEX Asia transcending all other events in the
region to become one which the industry can
really look upon as a core industry event.

A meeting of minds is how we vision
BEX Asia to be. It is an exhibition that the
building industry will relate to and we see
these co-located and concurrent events as
key points that value-add and strengthen our
overall positioning and offering, said Ms Michelle
Lim, General Manager for Reed Exhibitions.
We understand the importance of bringing
together industry professionals and providing
a business oriented platform where ideas and
opportunities can be realised and BEX Asia
aims to be just that. We are excited in BEX Asia
transforming into a significant event for the
region. We envisage our close partnerships with
BCA and SIA as critical factors that enhances
the value and success of our events. For more

AG, is to provide a total of 34 elevators and

Raine Square.

complex in Perth, Australia. Amongst others,

the building will include six innovative TWIN
systems, exclusively offered by ThyssenKrupp
Elevator. These are the first TWINs in Australia.

The installations for Raine Square are
one of the largest single orders for ThyssenKrupp
Elevator Australia. With the TWIN more people
can reach their destinations more quickly. At the
same time, this unique elevator system, which
runs two cabs independently from each other
and with different speeds in the same shaft,
saves valuable floor space. In Raine Square the
lower cabs will travel at 2.5 metres per second,
the upper cabs at 4 metres per second. This
further increases the capacity of the system
and reduces waiting times. The customer
opted for ThyssenKrupp Elevator because of the
numerous advantages TWIN has in comparison
with conventional elevators.

Raine Square will comprise an office
tower with a shopping centre below. The
planners of the 28-storey building, which will
cover almost an entire street block, attach
great importance to efficient and sustainable
solutions. On the outside, the heritage-protected
facades will be retained and integrated into the
overall design, while on the inside the TWIN
systems, among others, will ensure smooth
transportation of visitors. n

The Big 5 show sets new record

The Big 5 organisers reported more than 55,000 visitors and expect sustained growth
for 2009 show.

Dubai, UAE The Big 5, the Middle Easts

biggest trade fair for the building and
construction sector, reported in excess of 55,000
visitors over the five day event setting a new
record, says the shows organiser.

While these may be testing times as
far as the economic situation is concerned, we
are delighted that the undisputed industry
forum for the region has beaten all previous
attendance figures, said Simon Mellor, Vice
President Construction for show organisers
dmg media Dubai.

Exhibition space at
this years The Big
5 was completely
sold out with
3,200 exhibiting
companies from
53 countries.

anticipating the
same challenge
as this year in fitting in all those who want to
exhibit, added Mellor.

We had even more requests this year
from governments around the world for more
space at the 2009 event, added Mellor. We
are seeing a truly international audience from
throughout the world with senior executives
from chairman down attending. It underlines
that whatever the changing state of the world
economy, The Big 5 is where the industry comes
to network and maintain contact and that
business goes on.

Mellor added: There is still a lot of
investment and growth in the region, despite
a little cooling of the market which many see
14

as something of a relief.

This year s show also saw the
introduction for the first time at a major Dubai
Exhibition Centre event of a park-and-ride
system to help deal with traffic around the
venue.

The Big 5 did not bring Dubai to a
standstill as other events have, said Mellor.
For that we have to thank the Roads and
Transport Authority, Dubai Police and the venue
management. Next year, with the Dubai Metro
up and running with a dedicated station we
expect it to be even easier.

The Big 5 also introduced this year
a strong sustainability and green theme,
which proved popular, said Mellor. Products
and services that reduce the impact on the
environment were on show winners of the
Gaia Awards - named after the mythical Greek
goddess of the earth.

He added: We developed the
sustainability theme further at The Big 5
Technical Conference which introduced an
academic element to the event with debate
on energy efficient green building solutions
and environmentally friendly technologies for
the construction industry.

Exhibitors dispelled predictions of
gloom in the industry and reported high visitor
interest as well as potential deals.

I feel our products are very much
wanted here going by the number of
inquiries, said Tunc Pekmen, chief of export
development for Turkeys Firat. The response
has been fantastic, reported Nick Smith, Sales
and Marketing Director of Airblast of the
Netherlands.

Italy and Germany had the biggest
pavilions at this years show. Other country
pavilions included: Australia, New Zealand,

Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, France, Belgium, Finland,

Austria, Switzerland, Greece, Luxembourg,
Korea, Malaysia, Portugal, Malta, Spain, Taiwan,
Turkey, UK and the Philippines. In addition,
there are exhibitors from Bahrain, Chile, China,
Czech Republic, Egypt, Hong Kong, India,
Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon,
Netherlands, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Qatar,
Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovenia,
South Africa, Spain, Syria, Thailand, Tunisia,
United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, United States
of America and Vietnam.

Alongside The Big 5 exhibition this
year was The Big 5 PMV - The Middle Easts
premier construction plant, machiner y
and vehicles. Dedicated to suppliers and
manufacturers of construction plant, machinery
and vehicles, The Big 5 PMV featured a
huge outdoor arena showcasing outsized
equipment, including cranes, excavators, lifting
platforms, mobile concrete pumps, dumpers
and cement mixers.

The next Big 5 show will take place
at the Dubai International Exhibition and
Convention Centre from 23-27 November
2009 and the deadline for pre-registration
for exhibitors that took part this year will be
14 February 2009. For more information

Motorola manufacturing facility wins green award

Motorolas manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur near Chennai.

Sriperumbudur, India Motorolas manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur near Chennai has

been honoured with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDR) Silver certification
by the Indian Green Buildings Council. LEEDR is the global benchmark system for designing and
constructing the worlds greenest buildings. The recognition identifies Motorolas factory as the first
green manufacturing site in India. The award was presented at the ongoing Green Building Congress
organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Soumitra (Sammy) Sana, Country President, Motorola India,
said, Motorola has a deep and abiding respect for the environment. We comprehensively addressed
every environmental footprint and built in best global practices at every stage of the factorys lifecycle:
from design, to construction to operations. Meeting the LEEDR Silver certification is a beginning. We
are raising our environmental friendliness and sustainability bar higher.

The LEEDR India Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus based, marketdriven building rating system based on existing proven technology. It evaluates environmental
performance from a whole building perspective over a buildings life cycle, providing a definitive
standard for what constitutes a green building. Under the LEEDR Green Building Rating System,
Motorolas manufacturing facility was evaluated on several parameters. These included efficiency of
water usage, energy, material and resource selection, besides indoor environmental quality. Motorola
has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to essential and increasingly critical goals of
conserving energy and protecting the environment. The companys Sriperumbudur facility is the first
manufacturing plant in India to receive this recognition. We hope others will follow the example, said
Dr. Prem C. Jain, chairman, Indian Green Buildings Council (IGBC). n

Held alongside WTSE 2008 were
also concurrent meetings organised by
the supporting associations. Participants
were invited to join the UNESCAP Regional
workshop on Institutional Changes Required
to Achieve the MDG on Sanitation in Asia
and the Pacific, IPWA Leadership Roundtable
Discussion and the Eighth Sustainable
Sanitation Alliance Meeting, leading to
increased interaction and sharing of ideas
among the groups.

Day One was very significant for all
invited guests and conference participants as
everyone was invited to take the Sanitation
Pledge to affirm their conviction and
dedication to achieving total sanitation for all
by 2015. The United Nations has set a mandate
to halve the number of the estimated 2.5
billion people who still do not have access
to a hygienic toilet by 2015 as part of its
Millennium Development Goals.

W TO and I nternational Code
Council (ICC) also signed a Memorandum of
Understanding which saw the introduction of
initiatives to promote global codes of practice
for the design and construction of toilets. The
first of these initiatives entitled Potty Parity
was debated at the event, reviewed the ratio
of female to male cubicles in public toilets.

Day Three of the conference saw
the World Health Organization leading a
panel discussion on health and hygiene.
It discussed the various indicators needed
to monitor sanitation across countries, and
the impacts on health in relation to hygiene
standards and situations across Asia.

The global network of social
entrepreneurs, Ashoka Innovators for the
Public, also helped to address the pressing
financial issues involved in sanitation on the
last day of the conference. It led the social
funding and financing solutions track on
micro-financing issues and other funding
mechanisms, which would help provide
sanitation to those who are in need of aid.

Orchard Central introduces Singapores first Mediterranean-themed

marketplace
Singapore Far East Organization has unveiled
Singapores first Mediterranean retail concept,
The Med, located at the upcoming Orchard
Central at the heart of Orchard Road. A haven
for connoisseurs of all things Mediterranean, The
Med will consist of cafes, craft shops, bakeries
and delicatessens carrying a myriad of food
items and specialty products reflecting the
Mediterranean basin.
Conveniently located at the basement of Orchard Central, retailers will have access to high
Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) passenger traffic via an underpass to Somerset MRT station. Inspired by the
Modernist designs of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, The Med concept with African Vigour, Grecian
Surrealism and European Decadence themes, is designed to evoke the rich flavours and vibrant
colours of the Mediterranean basin, complete with imported mosaic tiles set against white-washed
tiles. The Med is designed by home-grown architectural firm DP Architects.
With a gross floor area of 33,588 square feet and a lettable area of 14,370 square feet,
The Med will house a variety of retail, lifestyle and F&B plans such as restaurants, cafes, gelato
parlours, wine and cheese specialty shops, bakeries, pizza shops, chocolatiers, delicatessens and
florists from countries such as Italy, Spain, France, Turkey, Morocco and Greece a complementary
tenant mix that will cater to a wide variety of customer needs.
The food and beverage offerings will comprise 70 percent of the retail mix which
will include three or four Mediterranean food concepts or restaurants to anchor The Med and
complemented with more casual eateries and take-away outlets. The remaining 30 percent will be
dedicated to fashion accessories, household dcor, and jewellery to complete the Mediterranean
experience.
With a lettable area of 250,000 square feet, the shopping mall is set to redefine the way
customers shop with its multi-level retail cluster approach. Fronting Orchard Road with 12 stories
of retail space, in addition to two basement levels, the malls 160 metre facade is an expansive
stretch of glass adorned with state-of-the-art lighting, creating dramatic visual merchandising
opportunities and brand visibility for retailers. n

Fenestration China still growing

Beijing, China - Fenestration China, the
international exhibition for windows and curtain
walls in Peking, grew again for the sixth time in
succession with 16,700 trade visitors in four days
(previous year: 15,400), 261 exhibitors (235) from
12 countries and a total display area of 25,000
square metres.
Despite the worldwide recession
and continuing financial crisis, there is a big
demand for fenestration products and services
in China. As leading regional exhibition in
Asia, Fenestration China particularly offers
international exhibitors the opportunity to make
new contacts and gain a foothold in the Chinese
growth market. Besides Chinese exhibitors,
companies from Germany, the USA, Turkey, Italy,
Poland, Austria, Switzerland, India, Japan and
Korea used this opportunity in 2008.
We are extremely satisfied with the
course of this years Fenestration China in Peking
and the number of visitors, explained Frank
Venjakob of Nrnberg Global Fairs immediately
after the exhibition. The response from the

exhibitors and visitors largely corresponded

to our expectations. The event grew again
over the previous year, which strengthened
our position as leading regional exhibition in
this major growth market.
Fenestration China also witnessed
an impressive show of products this year:
from glass products, hardware, doors, fixing
equipment, and machines, installations and
tools for working glass, wood or plastic to
information on services, associations, research
and development, Fenestration China once
again reflected the latest developments in
the window and curtain wall industry. Extra
features in 2008 were special focuses on
technological innovations like energy-saving
building or modern insulation techniques.
The exhibition therefore received appropriate
support from a number of different institutions
and organisations, including the Ministry of
Construction P.R. China, the German Association
of Window and Curtain Wall Manufacturers
(VFF), the Window and Door Manufacturers
Association ( WDMA), the Russian Energy
Efficient Window Manufacturers (APROK),
the Wood Structural Windows and Doors
Association of Norway, the Windows and Doors

Association of Spain (ASEFAVE), the National

Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) and the
International Window Film Association (IWFA).
Fenestration China also took place for the
first time as part of the Global Fair Alliance,
the cooperation between the industrys
four leading exhibitions: Fenestration China,
fensterbau/frontale in Nrnberg, Istanbul
Window and GlassBuild America will consult
each other on dates and core themes in future.
This also includes intellectual property rights.
A separate consulting company was present
at the exhibition specifically for taking care of
copyright violations: Some of the companies
affected made use of the opportunity to obtain
information and advice on the spot.
Positive conclusion in the German
pavilion
Besides trade visitors from all parts of China,
there were also many international visitors
from the region at Fenestration China: Peking
also attracted visitors from the neighbouring
Asian countries and from Australia, New
Zealand, India and Russia. So Fenestration
China clearly maintained its position as leading
regional exhibition for window and curtain wall
manufacture in China and Asia.
This development is also especially
encouraging for the 62 (previous year: 48)
international exhibitors from Germany, Europe
and the United States: Although the 199 (187)
Chinese exhibitors clearly accounted for the
majority of exhibitors at Fenestration, the
exhibition also opened the proverbial window
to the new growth market for suppliers from
abroad. Among others, the German and
American pavilions increased accordingly in
size.
The majority of the exhibitors in the
German pavilion including big players like
Alulux Beckhoff, Bosig, Hornschuch, Schco
and Roto Frank summed up positively after
the exhibition: They made new contacts
with companies in China and developed
relations with existing customers. During this
years Fenestration Days China conference,
international experts dealt with Energy
efficiency and protection of buildings against
natural disasters.
The Chinese government attaches
high priority to both these issues in the
current five-year plan. So Fenestration China
2009 is accordingly regarded optimistically at
present. This will take place again in Peking in
November 2009 as especially the climatic
conditions in the northern part of China require
far more energy-efficient building than in the
usually warm south of the country. It is already
confirmed that a German pavilion will be at the
exhibition again in the coming year.

midst of New Yorks skyline. Resting on
a plinth that is a historical building, the transparent high-rise stands out for its very expressive
shape. The jury, chaired by London-based architect Alejandro Zaera-Polo, was of the opinion
that its load-bearing triangular steel structure creates stories of different sizes and could be
a model for new prototypes. Together with its sustainable structure (the Hearst Tower is the
first high-rise in New York City to be certified as meeting the LEED Gold standard) it is setting
a new standard for office buildings in the metropolis of skyscrapers.

The high-rise, which was commissioned in 2006, was developed by the Hearst Corporation,
New York. The media corporation uses the new headquarters at its old established location as
its editorial centre. Gilbert C. Maurer, a member of the Board of Directors, took receipt of the
prize on behalf of the Hearst Corporation.

High-rises as a response to global

challenges
In her speech, Dr. h.c. Petra Roth stressed the importance of the
joint initiative by DekaBank and the City of Frankfurt/Main for the
city. She emphasised that with the International Highrise Award
(IHA) the city champions a planning concept that it has been
advancing for over 50 years now and the results of which include
a breathtaking skyline that is quite unique in Germany. Dr.
Matthias Danne stated that property investors are increasingly
fans of buildings that deliver trailblazing solutions: The Hearst
Tower shows that cost-effectiveness and sustainability are not
mutually exclusive, but actually co-determinates. And Peter
Cachola Schmal, Director of Deutsches Architekturmuseum
Hearst Tower, New York City
Photo: Chuck Choi
and a member of the IHA Jury 2008 underscored the fact that
today it is not only spectacular shapes and new record heights
that ensure high-rises worldwide attract attention. Instead, he continued, the issue is to what
extent a high-rise offers a specific solution to the given situation.

Exhibition showcases other high-rise projects, too

In addition to this years winner, the jury specially commended four other finalists, and also
bestowed a special sustainability award. Commendations went to the 116-metre-high Missing
Matrix Building (Seoul) designed by Mass Studies, the 121-metre-high residential tower Newton
Suites by WOHA and two other media high-rises, the 319-metre-high New York Times Building
(New York) by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and the 159-metre-high Television Cultural
Centre (Beijing) created by OMA - Office for Metropolitan Architecture. For the first time, the
jury bestowed an award in special recognition of urban, energy and social sustainability. It
went to the WestendDuo (Frankfurt/Main) designed by Frankfurt-based architects KSP Engel
und Zimmermann.

The International Highrise Prize 2008 exhibition, which ran at Deutsches Architekturmuseum
from 16 November 2008 through 4 January 2009, showcased the broad spectrum of prize-winning
and nominated projects. n

PNNL developing blueprint for code enforcement in China

PNNL Associate Laboratory Director for Energy and Environment Mike Davis (seated, left) signs a
memorandum of understanding with the State Departments Paula Dobriansky (seated, right), Under
Secretary of State for Diplomacy and Global Affairs, as they are joined by (left to right) Minister Xie
Feng of the Embassy of China, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington State, and PNNL scientist
Meredydd Evans.

Washington DC, USA The Department of Energys Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will
develop an action plan for building energy code enforcement that can be deployed in small and
medium-sized cities across China, where half of the worlds new construction will occur in the next
10 years.

Under a new grant announced on 3 December 2008, PNNL researchers will pilot a grass
roots campaign in two Chinese cities using public involvement and market incentives to increase
compliance with the countrys new, stricter building energy codes. The pilot will generate lessons
learned and a manual for programme implementation that can be replicated by cities across China.
The Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP) grant was announced on 3
December 2008 at the U.S. Department of State.

China has announced its ambitious goal to have new buildings 50 percent more energy
efficient by 2010. It has the worlds second-highest building energy use behind the United States.
Because buildings can last 30 to 50 years, the designs implemented today can impact emissions for
many years. Adhering to current building codes is critical for achieving Chinas energy-saving goals
and limiting greenhouse gas emissions associated with efficient energy use in its buildings.

China and the United States are in the midst of developing a productive partnership that
deals with local, national and global energy and climate change issues, said Shui Bin, PNNL project
manager. This project aims to contribute to the on-going efforts to improve building energy efficiency
in China.

The APP grant announcement included the signing of a memorandum of understanding
between PNNL and the U.S. State Department under the APP. APP awarded PNNL US$518,000 to
improve the implementation of and compliance with building energy codes in two cities in China.
Those cities will be announced in the near future.

The United States and China have a symbiotic relationship we have a shared responsibility
and a shared opportunity to help solve the global energy and environmental challenges, said Mike
Davis, PNNLs Associate Laboratory Director for Energy and Environment. With this MOU, we can be
more flexible and innovative in how we can partner PNNLs science and technology expertise with
APPs mission.

Under the grant, PNNL will work with the China Academy of Building Research, the chief
developer of most of Chinas national building energy codes, and the Beijing Energy Efficiency Center,
one of the most influential energy efficiency organizations in China. Another non-profit organisation
- the Blue Moon Fund - recently awarded the team US$295,000 for a complementary project. Under
the two grants, PNNL and its partners will:
- Train building inspectors, designers, construction companies and other key stakeholders to ensure
they have needed tools for greater compliance.
- Test two targeted marked-based incentive programs - information campaigns and bulk procurement
of energy-efficiency materials - to support code enforcement.
- Scale up the projects impact by districting lessons learned and training manuals nationally. n

German Bystronic glass technology centres will
be renamed. Armatec Vierhaus GmbH will be
operating under the name Bystronic Armatec

With the name change, we would like
to set a signal and convey more actively that
we have been in existence as an internal unit
for almost six years: We are the Bystronic glass
group and communicate as well as trade under
this corporate brand said Richard Jakob, CEO
of the Bystronic glass group and explained:
A market analysis, which was conducted
this year, has shown that we can continue to
improve our public perception in this way.

From the legal point of view, the
customers will not be affected by the name
change: All existing contracts will remain
untouched. Furthermore, the name of the
technology centre Bystronic Maschinen AG
in Btzberg, Switzerland, will also remain the
same. n

Australian architect wins 2009

AIA Gold Medal

Glenn Marcus Murcutt. Photo: Jure Zavrtanik

Washington DC, USA The AIA Board of

Directors have awarded the 2009 AIA Gold
Medal to Australian architect Glenn Marcus
Murcutt, Hon. FAIA.

Murcutt was recognised by the AIA
Board in large part for the depth of his work
and the breadth of his influence.

Murcutt, a sole practitioner, is noted
for his ecologically responsive and socially
responsible Modernist suburban and rural
homes with which he incorporates a variety
of natural materials.

Recently our architectural field
experienced an ecological boom, writes
2005 AIA Gold Medalist Tadao Ando in a
letter of support for Murcutts nomination.
However, without relation to such a trend
of time, Glenn Murcutt has always been
focusing on the geographical and regional
conditions, from the very beginning of his
career.

Although Murcutt works exclusively
in Australia, he has had and continues to
have a profound impact on architecture
around the world.

While some might characterise a
single-continent geographic range of work
as regional, the effect of Mr Murcutts is
amplified by impassioned and extensive
lectures and a commitment to teaching
throughout the world, said Tom Howorth,
FAIA, chair of the AIA Committee on Designs
Gold Medal Committee.

Murcutt, born in London in 1936,
grew up in the remote Morobe district of
New Guinea. Living close to the land helped
develop Murcutts preference for simple,
vernacular architecture.

Murcutt studied architecture at the
University of New South Wales from 1956
to 1961, during which he worked with a
series of architects. He established his own
practice in Sydney in 1970. n
