The magazine looks completely different from the publication you have grown
accustomed to over the years. The redesign achieves a clean, sophisticated,
modern look that we think will appeal to readers and advertisers. While it is a very
contemporary design, it still conveys the fundamental seriousness of Southeast Asia
Building as a trade magazine of the building industry covering architecture, interior
design, landscape architecture and facility management.
The magazine has come a long way since then and during this time, kept pace
with the ever-changing trends of the building industry. This growth would never
have been possible without the constant and committed effort and support of
many industry colleagues, readers, advertisers and contributors who were actively
involved with the magazine over the years.
The new look, now offers more content on the wider issues affecting the development
of the building and construction industry sector such as sustainable architecture
and energy efficiency. New editorial contents include an Export Country Focus
which is a section devoted to exporters of building materials to Southeast Asia. The
product showcase has also been expanded to offer readers more information on the
products, services and technology available in the market.

The entire team of Southeast Asia Building is excited about the magazines new look.
I hope you find it to be as interesting and inviting to read as we do to produce.

This year s show also saw the
introduction for the first time at a major Dubai

The Big 5 did not bring Dubai to a
standstill as other events have, said Mellor.
For that we have to thank the Roads and

up and running with a dedicated station we
expect it to be even easier.
The Big 5 also introduced this year

He added: We developed the

Held alongside WTSE 2008 were
also concurrent meetings organised by
the supporting associations. Participants
were invited to join the UNESCAP Regional
workshop on Institutional Changes Required
to Achieve the MDG on Sanitation in Asia
and the Pacific, IPWA Leadership Roundtable
Discussion and the Eighth Sustainable
Sanitation Alliance Meeting, leading to
increased interaction and sharing of ideas
among the groups.
Day One was very significant for all
invited guests and conference participants as
everyone was invited to take the Sanitation
Pledge to affirm their conviction and
dedication to achieving total sanitation for all
by 2015. The United Nations has set a mandate
to halve the number of the estimated 2.5
billion people who still do not have access
to a hygienic toilet by 2015 as part of its
Millennium Development Goals.
W TO and I nternational Code
Council (ICC) also signed a Memorandum of
Understanding which saw the introduction of
initiatives to promote global codes of practice
for the design and construction of toilets. The
first of these initiatives entitled Potty Parity
was debated at the event, reviewed the ratio
of female to male cubicles in public toilets.
Day Three of the conference saw
the World Health Organization leading a
panel discussion on health and hygiene.
It discussed the various indicators needed
to monitor sanitation across countries, and
the impacts on health in relation to hygiene
standards and situations across Asia.
The global network of social
entrepreneurs, Ashoka Innovators for the
Public, also helped to address the pressing
financial issues involved in sanitation on the
last day of the conference. It led the social
funding and financing solutions track on
micro-financing issues and other funding
mechanisms, which would help provide
sanitation to those who are in need of aid.

Holcim Foundation promoting innovative and sustainable approaches from the building industry
Switzerland In 2008, the Swiss-based Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction conducted the US$1.35 million regional phase of the
2nd Holcim Awards competition and launched three publications and an online events calendar thereby encouraging best practice and inspiring
architects, engineers and developers to adopt sustainable parameters for their building projects. The global phase of the Holcim Awards competition
takes place in 2009.
The Holcim Foundation conducts the Holcim Awards competition for projects and visions in sustainable construction in parallel across five
regions of the world. Almost 5,000 projects from authors in 90 countries were submitted in the competition, which aims to promote sustainable responses
from the building and construction industry to technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues. The 15 winners of the gold, silver and
bronze prize in each of the five regions automatically qualify for the global phase of the competition where a total of US$650,000 in additional prize
money is on offer.
The global Holcim Awards finalists include projects from Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Hungary, India, Morocco, Slovenia, Switzerland, UAE,
Uganda, USA, and Vietnam, and involve additional project teams from Japan and Spain. [The finalist projects are listed at the end of this release.]
Each of the teams will now prepare a more extensive submission that will be evaluated by an independent jury headed by acclaimed Indian
architect and planner Charles Correa and include renowned representatives from architecture, science, and business. The jury is supported by the Technical
Competence Center of the Holcim Foundation (ETH Zurich, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tongji University) and will evaluate the projects
according to the target issues for sustainable construction developed by the Holcim Foundation in collaboration with its partner universities.
Results of the global phase of the Holcim Awards competition will be announced on 8 May 2009. n

PNNL Associate Laboratory Director for Energy and Environment Mike Davis (seated, left) signs a
memorandum of understanding with the State Departments Paula Dobriansky (seated, right), Under
Secretary of State for Diplomacy and Global Affairs, as they are joined by (left to right) Minister Xie
Feng of the Embassy of China, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington State, and PNNL scientist
Meredydd Evans.
Washington DC, USA The Department of Energys Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will
develop an action plan for building energy code enforcement that can be deployed in small and
medium-sized cities across China, where half of the worlds new construction will occur in the next
10 years.
Under a new grant announced on 3 December 2008, PNNL researchers will pilot a grass
roots campaign in two Chinese cities using public involvement and market incentives to increase
compliance with the countrys new, stricter building energy codes. The pilot will generate lessons
learned and a manual for programme implementation that can be replicated by cities across China.
The Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP) grant was announced on 3
December 2008 at the U.S. Department of State.
China has announced its ambitious goal to have new buildings 50 percent more energy
efficient by 2010. It has the worlds second-highest building energy use behind the United States.
Because buildings can last 30 to 50 years, the designs implemented today can impact emissions for
many years. Adhering to current building codes is critical for achieving Chinas energy-saving goals
and limiting greenhouse gas emissions associated with efficient energy use in its buildings.
China and the United States are in the midst of developing a productive partnership that
deals with local, national and global energy and climate change issues, said Shui Bin, PNNL project
manager. This project aims to contribute to the on-going efforts to improve building energy efficiency
in China.
The APP grant announcement included the signing of a memorandum of understanding
between PNNL and the U.S. State Department under the APP. APP awarded PNNL US$518,000 to
improve the implementation of and compliance with building energy codes in two cities in China.
Those cities will be announced in the near future.
The United States and China have a symbiotic relationship we have a shared responsibility
and a shared opportunity to help solve the global energy and environmental challenges, said Mike
Davis, PNNLs Associate Laboratory Director for Energy and Environment. With this MOU, we can be
more flexible and innovative in how we can partner PNNLs science and technology expertise with
APPs mission.
Under the grant, PNNL will work with the China Academy of Building Research, the chief
developer of most of Chinas national building energy codes, and the Beijing Energy Efficiency Center,
one of the most influential energy efficiency organizations in China. Another non-profit organisation
- the Blue Moon Fund - recently awarded the team US$295,000 for a complementary project. Under
the two grants, PNNL and its partners will:
- Train building inspectors, designers, construction companies and other key stakeholders to ensure
they have needed tools for greater compliance.
- Test two targeted marked-based incentive programs - information campaigns and bulk procurement
of energy-efficiency materials - to support code enforcement.
- Scale up the projects impact by districting lessons learned and training manuals nationally. n
