Working with SOFiCAD Reinforcement

General
SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 allows you to easily draw all round steel and mesh reinforcements.
You can change reinforcements created using SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 at any time using the
relevant commands. (associative reinforcement).
Part and full lengths and bills of material are generated automatically. Steel- and bending lists
such as cutting drafts are generated automatically and can either be outputted or inserted into
the drawing.
For all users creating reinforced concrete components, SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 should greatly
facilitate working and increase the quality of your drawing.
The SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 dialog is built up in the same way as the one in the SOFiCAD
Basic Package. The instructions in the AutoCAD- and SOFiCAD manual generally apply.
AutoCAD Architectural Desktop 2.0, Architectural Desktop 3.0, AutoCAD 2000 or AutoCAD
2000i or higher are prerequisites for working with SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1.
Brief overview
Chapter Getting Started see page 31 explains the theoretical principles of the SOFiCAD-RC
16.5/17.1. Using examples, it explains the general principles of steel bar and mesh reinforcement, in addition to how to work with the multiplier and the determination of the number of
pieces in the respective Bending schedule.
In Chapter Steel bar Reinforcement see page 64 the steel bar commands are described,
Chapter
Mesh reinforcement see page 149 contains mesh reinforcement Chapter
Miscellaneous see page 201 the special commands.
As we are always developing SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1, this manual does not always describe
the latest version of the program. Modifications are described in the SOFiCADB.LOG file. It is
recommended that, when you receive a new version of the program, you print this file and
attached it to your manual. You can display it on the screen using the scrolling HELP menu.
We therefore recommend that you always read: SOFICADB.LOG
Handling
To draw up reinforcement drawings with the SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 we recommend the
following handling:
In the layout, you should create the viewports you need for your drawing. There you define the
scale in which you want the details be plotted.
To work flawless with bending list and list meshes, you have to create a project data base.
This can be made with the command Create drawing definition, when you are working without the Construction Module in SOFiCAD. In the project data base, there is saved every drawing with the same project number and in the same directory. When you are working with the
Construction Module, please have a look to this manual.

New in SOFiCAD-RC version 16.4T

General

New in SOFiCAD-RC version 16.4

In this chapter you will find information about new functions in the latest SOFiCAD-B version.

General
Free Viewer
To display SOFiCAD-drawings with viewports in pure AutoCAD resp. in Viewers such as
VoloView, for that you need so called DBX-files. You find them at the autodesk homepage for
free. the DBX-files can be loaded in AutoCAD, AutoCADLT, AutoCAD OEM (e.g.: SOFiPLUS
X) and VoloView.
Extended settings in the parameter
The multiplier 0 can be faded out for plotting for the whole file. On the screen, it is always
faded in.

The settings concerning steelbar diameter, mesh types and bar spacer in the *.TAB and the
settings concerning the VBA routines (bending diameter, minimum bar spacing and hook
length) in the *.DVB are now in country specific files. The country telephone code is added to
the filename, e.g. for Germany SOFSTLI_49.TAB. So the user can manage and work with
different settings.

17

New in SOFiCAD-RC version 16.4T

Steelbar

Reinforcement

The settings of SOFSTLI_??.TAB and SOFBSUSR_??.DVB are also saved in the drawing file.
If these files cannot be found be the program, the saved data will be used. If the files can be
found, they have priority to the saved data.
3-D functionality -arrange reinforcement at different planes
Reinforcement can be arranged in different planes. The reinforcement is placed in the actual
ucs, that can also be defined in space. The reinforcement is still 2-dimensional. The different
objects do not have to be in the same plane any more.

The command BFE-show can also work in the 3-dimensional system.

Data out of a 3-diemsional static calculation can be inserted in the drawing. As an important
aid you can now select groups from the CDB to display.

Steelbar
In this chapter you will find the news in the steelbar.

Meshes

Reinforcement

Automatic reinforcement
From version 16.2 on the basic reinforcement in automatically created reinforcements there
had been many different positions. From version 16.2 the basic reinforcement creates profiles
with variable lengths.

Meshes
Drawing meshes
To create a drawing mesh, you need a drawing definition and an existing project data base.

To define a drawing mesh, you first should insert a single mesh (list or standard mesh) into the
drawing to use it as a basic mesh. The command 'Define drawing mesh' transfers the selected
mesh into the working mode. In the right click menu you will find many commands to modify
the mesh. E.g. modify and control the bar diameter, delete or add bars,...
You close the working mode with the command 'Complete'. Then you name the drawing mesh
and it will be inserted into the project data base.

28

SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1

Reinforcement

New in SOFiCAD-RC version 16.4T

Meshes

From now on list and drawing meshes are saved in the drawing additionally to the project data
base. If SOFiCAD will not find the project data base, a new one will be created including the
list and drawing meshes that exist in the drawing. The data in the project data base have
precedence over the data in the drawing.
See also List meshes / Drawing meshes at page 182
Edit

To modify the mesh size of a whole position, there is now the command
'Modify mesh size'. Define the position and the new dimension via keyboard.

Change meshtype.

This command is now using a dialogue box: there you can select the new mesh type.
Meshfield
General mesh fields have a new option now:

Getting Started
In the following chapter, you get an explanation with examples, how to create reinforcement
with SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1

Examples for steelbar reinforcement

In the following chapter you will find two examples with explanations about working with the
commands 'profiles' and' layings'
From now on you can work using menus or toolbars. In the examples the right click menu is
used.

Reinforcing a beam
General
The first example includes a beam. At first we create stirrups and longitudinal bars, then we
create the layings.
To create the reinforcement we use the existing formwork.

SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1

31

Getting Started
Examples for steelbar reinforcement

Reinforcement

Constructing a 4-cut stirrup using the formwork

In the example we use a concrete cover of 5,0 cm on the top of the slab and 3,0 cm on bottom
of the slab. Default for concrete cover is 3,0 cm.

Select the command Define concrete cover

Selct now with the cursor the upper side of the slab, then finish the
selection with Return and define 5 cm as new concrete cover.
Now select the command Profiles

32

The dialogue box "Profiles" appears on the screen

Select now the upper side of the slab as upper formwork. The intelligent
cursor now uses the defined cover of 5 cm and not the preselected
value from the dialogue (as an information, you get a tool tip).

Define now the insertion point for the profile and the corresponding
textblock.

Transversal bars in section

First we create the lower transversal bar.

Select the command Laying

The dialogue box Laying appears on the screen. For the example select display Section, steel grade 500S, position 3, diameter 16 mm,
number 5, concrete cover 3 cm.

Now select the lower leg of the stirrup where you want to distribute the
transversal bars.

Close the appearing dialogue box with OK.

Show now the base point of the text, confirm the angle of the text with
Return and show the end point of the harp.

Analogous to that you create the upper layer with position 4 and diameter 20 mm.

Tip: As A1-extratcs do not have a unique direction, it may happen, that

in real form the diameter will be created to the wrong direction. For that
case you have the command "A1 mirror".

Laying the stirrups along the beam

The next step is to define the layings for the stirrups positions 1 and 2 in the beam.
Position 1 is layed over the whole beam with spacing 15 cm.

Select the command Laying

. Select the position using the

Example of mesh reinforcement

SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 defines various reinforcement layers for the drawing of meshes.

Main view: The mesh consists of unbroken lines and a diagonal line
from bottom left to top right. The representation takes place in the drawing view.

Layer 2: The mesh consists of broken lines with a diagonal from bottom
right to top left. The representation takes place in the drawing view.

Secondary view: The mesh is drawn as a dot dash line. Here you can

Steel bar Reinforcement

General Information

Reinforcement

Steel bar Reinforcement

In the following chapter the steel bar reinforcement with SOFiCAD Reinforcement will be
described.

General Information
Number of pieces
When steel bar profiles are being generated, they always have the number of pieces "0. The
program only enters the number of pieces of the relevant position after they are laid using a
BV- or S-command. All the reinforcement distribution commands relating to a position are
added together in order to determine the number of pieces. This happens automatically in the
current version. Therefore, it is not necessary to adjust the data list later.
The insertion point for steel bar reinforcement is always found on the bottom left. As for mesh
commands, the harmonious functioning of the insertion point and rotating angle is very important. To make it clearer, a drawing will now be printed

Position numbers
Position numbers are automatically assigned by the program. It is only possible to explicitly
enter a position number by using the option "Position. The next available position number is
prompted as a default. Positions, which have been deleted, are reassigned by the program if
necessary. Position numbers can easily be changed at a later stage using the command
"Change steel bar, reposition and "Change steel bar, position singly.

Steel bar lengths

The maximum lengths for a steel bar are given in the steel bar parameters. Where a steel
length exceeds the preset maximum value, the program gives the following message:
Total length > 18.00; continue? (Yes/<No>):

64

SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1

Reinforcement

Steel bar Reinforcement

General Information

If "No is selected, the command is Canceled.

Steel bar dimensions

All part dimensions shown by the program are external dimensions. In the case of bent up
bars, dependent upon the type of construction, apparent discrepancies can occur: If the reinforcement is generated using an angle corresponding to the formwork, (by entering a numerical value), dimension "X appears incorrect. If on the other hand, the reinforcement is generated using "Indicating formwork edges, the angle of the bend up will not be consistent with
the angle of the formwork. This problem is explained by the fact that, when a bar is drawn as a
line for a simple display, it has the thickness 0, whilst the true diameter is not equal to 0. You
can define which scale on the bars is to be defined as the actual thickness in the steel bar
style function. The following drawing clarifies the connections.

Important terms
Intelligent cursor
The intelligent cursor helps you consider automatically the concrete cover into the selected
direction. . If the selected formwork edge is inside the border of the pickbox, the concrete
cover will be considered to the side of the center of the cursor.
As a flyout on the cursor you get the information, which concrete cover is used for that line.
Edge
With this option you can select any line as formwork. The selected line can have any colour,
linetype and can be on any layer.
Delta
With the option Delta you must work, if you want a special value as over stand to an edge.
Select the edhe and type a positive value for over stand and a negative value as spacing.

Overlapping
If you want to create an overlapping to a special bar or an anchorage length then you need
this option. Select the bar for the overlapping resp. the edge for the anchorage and define in
the appearing dialogue box the options for calculating the overlapping resp. anchorage.
Existing
With this option you can select the length of an edge out of the existing construction. The
selected length is taken for the next part length. You can also select legs of profiles.
Show point
With this option you can select any point as construction points.

A

Only bars whose part lengths are arranged at right angles to one another

Stirrups

Bars where the part lengths are assigned diagonally to each other
(For these steel bar positions, the C value can also be entered as a negative)

Reinforcement for the position reinforcement and S-hooks

Bars with circular part lengths

Examples of steel bar profiles

There are always different ways to create an profile. The single parameters can be given as
numbers, then you must define position and orientation of the bar. It is more comfortable to
use formwork edges . Here the orientation is normally unique. You can also mix the ways to
define the leg lengths.
In the following chapter you will find some different examples to create profiles.

variable reinforcement profile
The "Steel bar profiles Variable reinforcement profiles command specifies the smallest and
largest part dimension of a reinforcement for profileed steel bars, which are in diagonal formworks. A total length in the middle (i.m) is specified in the reinforcement block. Several variable part lengths and various combinations of the part dimensions are possible.
A table of single lengths must be inserted into the drawing in order to produce the stirrups. The
information for the bending list is taken into this list from the position management. (If there is
insufficient space, the table can be suppressed).
The different part lengths are assigned numerical values by clicking the two outermost formwork edges or by entering the limit dimension. Before the part lengths are calculated, the
program prompts for the part number. If a laying already exists, the part number is taken over
automatically. If a laying is not already available, a warning is given:

In the case where layings are already available, but show different part numbers, the variable
reinforcement profiles command cannot be carried out. The following message appears:

The lines, which display stirrups in the view, must be reworked. The stirrup and two layings

Mesh reinforcement
Preliminary information

Mesh reinforcement
In the following chapter, the mesh reinforcement in SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 will be described.

Preliminary information
Unlike for previous versions, a mesh, mesh row or a mesh field is no longer composed of
several different types of lines and blocks, but it is now an object with particular characteristics, such as length, width etc. The method of processing is now somewhat different from
before (see).

Field display

SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 allows you to select between two types of

mesh display.
The first option is the Field display "As a whole". In this display,
several meshes are connected by a common diagonal line. They
are handled by the program as single meshes.
The second option is the Field display "Single meshes". This
means that every mesh has a diagonal.

Single meshes
Select

The Select< button allows you to relay meshes, which already

exist in a drawing, by pointing to the mesh. All characteristics of
this mesh are shown in the dialog box.

Position

Here the next free position is automatically shown. If you want to

relay a particular mesh, you can enter the corresponding position
directly here.

Type

Here you can change the type of single meshes from the mesh
field or the mesh row.

Text

Here you can select a standard text from a list field or enter any
text using the keyboard.

Multiplier

If a laying is to be counted more than once in the Bending schedule, you must select a multiplier. To do this, point the arrows up or
down or enter them using the keyboard.

Stirrup meshes

Here you define all part lengths, which are to be displayed in the
laying, and the cutting angle using the Select view button. The
total length, which is produced, and the cutting angle are shown
in the text on the right.

Change properties
In this chapter only those options are described, which are additional to the dialog box Entering meshes (see). All options, which are not greyed out, can be changed. When changing the
length and width, do ensure that all meshes get the new dimensions, without the laying type
being changed. Changes in the single meshes section are deleted.

Laying type

This dialog box allows you to select whether the mesh impact for a mesh field should be X-or
Y-directional. The pictures on the top right schematically show you the laying type.
You can select from the option cards X and Y, how the meshes should be laid. If the overlap is
changed, the laying types are updated accordingly.
For mesh rows, only the option card X can be seen in this dialog box. Whether the mesh
overlap is selected in the X or the Y direction has no effect.

can however also enter any other free position.

Mesh style

This option allows you to change the mesh style of the stirrup
mesh. The current style is shown as standard and is shown in the
next laying. For information on rearranging the current mesh, see.

Type

This option allows you to select the mesh types. Which meshes
are to be displayed in the list field, depends firstly on the length of
the shape code (if for example the length of the shape code is
5.50 m, only meshes with a minimum length of 5.50 m are suggested), on the other hand, and secondly on the setting in the
Parameters dialog box .

Text

Select a standard text from the list field or enter any text you wish
using the keyboard.

Length

Here you can change the length of a stirrup mesh, which was
bent round the direction of support.

Width

Here you can change the width of a stirrup mesh, which was not
bent round the direction of support.

Bending

Use this option to select whether the meshes are bent horizontally
or vertically to the supporting direction. When the bending is
vertical to the supporting direction, the maximal mesh width must
not be exceeded.

Profile in the formwork

This option allows you to specify whether an profile in the formwork should be displayed and whether additional copies should
be generated. The copies are true polylines, which can be worked
on independently from the stirrup meshes, but which no longer
however have any reference to the stirrup mesh.

Similarity limits
End leg length [cm]

This value defines at what divergence level of an end part length,

the program recognises the bar of an identical shape code as
already available and asks the user whether this position can be
used.
End part lengths are for example, in the case of an A3 bar, the
part lengths "A and "C.
Example: A shape code A3 with the part lengths a=72 cm, b=26
cm and c=72 cm already exists. If the shape code A3 with the
same diameter and the part lengths a=70 cm, b=26 cm and c=70
cm is determined by the program (Show formwork edges),
SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 recognises that a similar position already
exists and suggests that the user should use this position. In the
case of fitted forms, a new position can of course also be generated.

Middle leg length [cm]

Intermediate part lengths are for example the part length "B" of an
A3 bar.
This setting determines up to what divergence level a reinforcement form with an identical diameter is prompted by the program
as being already available (on principle, the same as for end part
lengths, however, intermediate part lengths are usually fitted
lengths and the allowances must therefore be lower).

Rounding dimensions
Leg lengths [cm]

All part lengths will be rounded up to the dimension set here. Part
lengths can also be single lengths (e.g. A1 bar).

Full length of B1, B3 and This setting allows you to round up the full lengths of the shape
D1 [cm]
codes B1, B3 and D1. In the case of a rounding dimension of for
example 5 cm, the full lengths are rounded up to a full 5 cm. The
rounded up "cm is added to the hooks.

SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1

205

Miscellaneous
Settings
Laying centres [cm]

Reinforcement

This option determines a rounding dimension for the spacing of

the reinforcement using the laying commands "Range 1, 2 or 3
and circular laying. There are two different ways of entering this
information:
1. A laying spacing is entered.
In principal, at this point, there is the problem that the desired
spacing can almost never be laid, as the section can only rarely
be divided exactly. SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 therefore draws in the
first and last stirrup and divides the spacing by the number of
stirrups to be laid. In the case of a section of e.g. 2.58 m and a
number of pieces of 19 stirrups, a spacing of exactly 14,33 cm
follows. (The next chapter "Rounding limits of" is also important
for the number). The stirrups in the formwork are also drawn with
this spacing. The laying block however has the originally entered
spacing (-15). This guarantees that none of the reinforcements
are ever missing and that the spacing of 15 cm is not exceeded. It
can however happen that at the end of a reinforcement (the reinforcement is laid on the construction site at a spacing of 15cm)
the spacing decreases or in an extreme case that there is an
extra stirrup.
2. The number of pieces is entered:
The number of pieces is entered and the whole process is somewhat different. The section is divided by the number of stirrups to
be laid and the corresponding spacing is entered into the laying
block. The rounding value entered in the dialog box is taken into
account.

Rounding limit for num- In the case where a reinforcement is laid (range) the number of
pieces is determined by dividing the section to be laid by the
ber of laying parts
laying spacing plus the first bar. In the case example (laying
section 2.58 m) the following result would be obtained:
2.58 m divide by 0.15 m gives 17.2 stirrups. Then add the first
stirrup to give a total of 18 stirrups to be laid. 2.58 m divided by 17
(18 stirrups give 17 spacings) would result in a spacing of 0.152
m. This is why we have the rounding limit for number of pieces in
laying. The set value of 0.10 means that if this value is exceeded,
the program adds an additional stirrup to the 18 already available.
This makes it impossible for the spacing of 15 cm to be exceeded.
In the above example 17.2 stirrups were determined (corresponds
to 0.20, accordingly 19 stirrups are needed in the last example).
Enter preset values

Actual constr. stage

Reinforcement

A new construction stage will be created and set actual by

entering a new name for it. If there have not been construction stages in the drawing yet, the existing reinforcement
objects will be assigned to the actual one. New objects get
automatically the actual one too.
Only layings, distr. Bars and meshes can be assigned to a
construction stage. Profiles will not be considered. So it is
possible to lay one position in several construction stages.
The construction stages can be edited with the command
InfoEdit or the property manager.
Additional bars and construction stages exclude each other.
If there are already construction stages in a drawing you
cannot create additional bars and reverse. If you insert
profiles with additional bars in a drawing with construction
stages, then the additional bars will be deleted. You will get
a notice about that.
If layings with assigned construction stages are inserted in a
drawing without construction stages, they will loose these
informations. If there exist already construction stages, they
will hold these informations.

213

Miscellaneous
Special commands

Reinforcement

When generating a Bending schedule, SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 generates a text file. Its name
consists of the drawing name and the suffix "LST. Additionally, all positions are saved in a file
under the project name and the suffix ".PBD. If an assembly drawing of the whole project is
output, this is then limited to the bills of material, which are in the file Projectname.MDB. This
must not therefore be deleted.
If no drawing header has been inserted into the drawing, you are prompted for the project
number, drawing number, building project and component.
The steel and mesh list can be inserted into the drawing if so desired /or it can be printed.
Additionally, there is also the possibility, when calculating the Bending schedule, to change the
degree of precision for length and weight to millimetres or grams. To do this simply enter an
additional decimal point for each in the dialog box "Parameters for the rounding dimensions.
Before calculating the Bending schedule, the following entries must be made:

Explanation:
Number of executions

If the reinforcement of a drawing is to be produced regularly (e.g.

for prefabricated sections), the corresponding part number can be
entered here. Then, at the end of the Bending schedule, the total
weight is multiplied with the part number specified.

Create bending list

Important: Another point to consider for ranges is that the displayed leg length is charged,
independent from the real leg length!!!!! Moreover you can define a lap length for ranges in the
Info/Edit dialogbox. It is automatically calculated with the following adjustments:

Once you changed the adjustements, they will be saved in the drawing and will be taken for
the next laying. In Info/Edit you can enter any value or calculate a new one by switching to the
dialogbox at any time. The lap length is important in connection with the command BFE-show.
For easier construction, there is the osnap point at the lap length.

You can also work with drawings from older SOFiCAD-versions.

Full compatibility with SOFiCAD 2000

Reinforcement drawings from Version 2000 or Version 14.3 of SOFiCAD can be taken without
any convertion or other handling. Older SOFiCAD-reinforcement can be converted to newer
dates.

Convertion
Convert old steel bars
The Convert old steel bars command allows you to convert old steel bars which were drawn
using older versions (up to SOFiCAD 14.2), into new steel bars. A prerequisite for the conversion is that the steel bar can still be panned without any problems using the old version and
that all relevant data are on the right layer.
Due to the previous manipulation options, it was unfortunately impossible to develop a conversion routine, which converts the whole drawing 1:1. Copies of profiles and profiles in the formwork are not converted. At the time each drawing is converted, a text file is automatically
generated for the documentation, which is given the name DATEINAME.txt and which is
saved in the same directory as the drawing. This text file contains information about everything, which has been converted and potential error messages.
Points to consider when carrying out a conversion:

224

Miscellaneous
Tips and Tricks

After the conversion, please check all previous steel bar layers for remaining objects which have not been converted

For coils with different leads, the sections are standardised to one metre length. This should be worked on using Info/Edit.

Hook lengths are converted to standard dimensions. These can however easily be worked on using Info/Edit.

Bending roll diameters, which have been changed, should also be

checked.

Convert old meshes

Using the command Convert old meshes you can convert meshes, which were drawn with
older versions (up to SOFiCAD 14.1), into new meshes. To be able to do the conversion, the
meshes must be able to be easily panned with the old version.

How to start the command CONVERT OLD MESHES:

the mandrel diameter is defined. The name of the file includes the country-definition.

234

SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1

Reinforcement

Miscellaneous
Tips and Tricks

To do this you need to have a basic knowledge of the programming language Basic (Visual
Basic for Applications) and to be familiar with working in the VBA development environment.

Loading the VBA project:

AutoCAD command line:

VBALOAD -> sofbsusr.dvb

(if SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 is loaded, this step is missed out)

VBAIDE

This is how you get to the VBA Editor

SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1 currently uses 4 VBA routines.

SOF_MinDistOfBars()

minimal necessary spacing between the 2 parallel

bars.

SOF_HookLength()

Length of hooks

SOF_StirrupHookLength()

Length of stirrup hooks

SOF_BendingRadius()

Radius of bending roll

As calling up VBA routines takes up relatively large amounts of computing time, all results
calculated are stored in an internal cache. This means that all values need only be calculated
once for each diameter using VBA. Only when AutoCAD is shut down are these results deleted. Take note of this if you alter the formulae!
The transfer of parameters is done via the global AutoCAD variables USERR1-USERR3,
although USERR3 always contains the returned value (Result).

Example:
You can use the following small Lisp program to test the routine for calculating the hook
lengths:
(defun S:hakenlaenge (diam / hooklength)
;***************************************
; setzen der AutoCAD Variablen USERR1, Diameter diam in [mm]
(setvar "USERR1" diam)
; Aufruf der VBA Routine SOF_HookLength
(command "_-vbarun" "SOF_HookLength")
; holen des Ergebnisses in der AutoCAD Variablen USERR3
; Hakenlnge in [m]
(setq hooklength (getvar "USERR3") )
;Ausgabe des Ergebnisses
(princ "\nBei einem Diameter von ")

(loadvbatest)

Start with

(S:hooklen 20)

This calculates the hook length for an bar with a diameter of 20 mm.

Test routines for the other VBA formulae can be generated similarly.
WARNING: If you make a mistake when changing the VBA formulae, there can be considerable problems with SOFiCAD-RC 16.5/17.1. This should be done only by experienced users!!!
