History [edit]
Source [edit]
African fundamental religious values are ancestral, were inherited from earlier religious
cultures to Christianity. The Afro-Brazilian culture began a syncretism between Catholicism,
afros educated, native cults, Kardec Spiritist doctrine. Share maybe rules or principles of
Eastern religions (Buddhism and Hinduism) but for reasons perhaps temporary or maybe share
geographically hemisphere, a native belief that has been changing in different areas, but its
principles have remained almost intact, so it is possible to find similarities or coincidences in
the bases or early beliefs and those beliefs misnamed "magic".
Within its temples, poorly commonly called "magic" really negative energies, is opposed and
annulled by the entities that manifest incorporating them in their mdiums.2
First stream [edit]
Formed by native spirits that lived before the arrival of the foreign conquerors. These spirits
were familiar with the phenomenon of incorporation of mediums, as it was already practiced
by elchamanismo in their ceremonies. They already believed in the immortality of the spirit,

the existence of the supernatural world and the ability of the "dead" interfere in the life of the
incarnate.
Second stream [edit]
African cults, without contact with Brazilian native, had these same beliefs, only made better
defined and more. Their priests practiced rituals and magic to balance the influences of the
supernatural world of the underworld and also to balance people. They believed in the
immortality of the spirit and power of them on the incarnated, reaching create a cult for them
(the worship of the people Egngn Yorb). They also worshiped the ancestral through
elaborate rituals and persist, as they are one of the pillars of their religious beliefs. Their
culture was transmitted orally from father to son, in the form of legends, preserving ancient as
the creation of the world, men and even events like the biblical flood knowledge. The
Umbanda cults inherited from his divine pantheon African nation, which was pontificate by a
Supreme Being and populated by gods who were his executors with humans and their divine
assistants who helped in the realization of the material world.
Third stream [edit]
Formed by Kardecists, incorporating spirits of Indians, black ex-slaves, Oriental, etc. They
created the current called "Umbanda White" in the spiritist molds, but which accepted the
manifestation of caboclos, pretos-velhos and children / as. This current can be described as
half-way between spiritualism and native cults and afros, because it is based on Christian
doctrine, but venerated religious values inherited from the Americans and African peoples. No
open their worship with songs and drums, but with prayers to Jesus. Its members are
identified as "Espiristas of Umbanda".
Fourth stream [edit]
Within the Umbanda, the use of white magic or positive magic became part of religion, being
impossible to separate the pure spiritual religious works of magical spiritual works, and so is
the common black magic, in this current.
Religious syncretism, in which the Catholic religion of images supplied, placed on altars,
facilitated the transition of Catholics towards Umbanda.
Expansion [edit]

The celebration do orisha Iemanj, nocandombl do Ase Ijino Ilu Ile Orossi. Bahia, Brazil
The cult grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century, especially among the black
population, because in 1960 there were 50,000 Brazilian terreiros and in 1980 already had
300,000. In that decade in Uruguay had 300 terreiros (house of worship) and Argentina 200.
Until the second half of the twentieth century all Afro-Brazilian religions were you consider
criminal by the Brazilian government and were subject to periodic repression.
More recently they have become an important part of Brazilian popular culture especially in
central Brazil and in cities like Rio de Janeiro or Salvador and novelists and musicians have
written or sung about them. Several of the works of Jorge Amado3 eg dealing with the life of
the black population, Afro-Brazilian. Composers such as Tom Jobim, Raul Seixas, Toquinho,
Geraldo Vandr and Clara Nunes have sung to Umbanda. In the 1970s, the poet Vinicius de

Moraes married his last wife, Gesse, in a Umbanda ceremony witnessed by many prominent
figures of culture and Brazilian politics. Umbanda has much in common with Quimbanda,
which claims its separate identity, claiming to be more secluded African and Candombl and
Macumba. Today there are terreiros, in Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, USA (Miami) and Spain
(Tenerife).
Seven Lines Umbanda [edit]
In Umbanda there are seven lines that are interpreted as "the seven living irradiation of God":
faith, love, knowledge, justice, law, laevolucin and creativity.
The umbandista cosmogenesis Catholic differs in that the second is based on the Jewish and
the other in Nigeria. In the Jewish comognesis, God created everything and gave it to man. In
the Nigerian cosmogenesis God (also called Olodumare or Olodum) delegated to Orixas
function concretize the Ax or earth (the planet) and the beings that inhabit.
The syncretism confused the two religions and the existence of these seven lines, hindering its
logical or correct explanation. Some umbandistas authors describe them as: line east line saint,
San Jorge line, line of San Jernimo, African line, line of San Lazaro, Oxala line, line of African
Indians Native Americans, etc. He also mixed the Orishas with Catholic saints, which is a factor
of confusion among some umbandistas interpreters.
All theogonies are formed by divinities "donated" by the sacred Setenario composed of seven
thrones or Orishs Ancestral which sustain life, the s and energies that feed the senses. The
seven s are: glass, mineral, vegetable, fire, air, earth, water. The seven energies are crystalline
energy, mineral energy, power plant, fiery energy, wind energy, water telluric yenerga.
The Setenario also gives rise to the seven planetary reflective fabrics, formed by mental
vibrations radiated by the seven ancient Orishs and wrapping around the globe, all
dimensions and all vibrational levels, leaving nothing or nobody out. The Thrones or planetary
Orishs are omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent, vibrationally may interfere in the life of
a being or an entire dimension.
The seven planetary radiation are not restricted only to the religious universe (material or
spiritual), but reach everything that exists on the planet, but remain hidden from people
because they belong to other dimensions, governed by Orishs or dimensional Thrones, called
"Regents dimensions. "
Within the planet there are seven basic elemental dimensions that are crystal dimension pure,
pure mineral dimension, pure vegetable dimension, dimension igneous pure, pure wind
dimension pure earthy dimension, pure water dimension. Each has a pair of pure Orishas, a
pair of Regents, middle and lower in each elemental dimension orishs. Many guides Umbanda
law bind to the minor Orishas pure elementary and work with their energies in the field of
magic and cures. Each orish act specifically:
The basic Orixs of crystals act within the meaning of faith.
The basic Orixs of minerals act within the meaning of love.
The elementary Orix of plants operating in the field of knowledge.
The Orishas basic igneous act in the sense of reason.
The Orishas wind elemental act in that direction.

The basic Orixs telluric act in the direction of evolution.

Water Elemental Orixs act in the sense of creativity.
These seven classes of elementary Orishas are fully associated with the s of terrestrial nature
and in the religious basis of the Seven Lines Umbanda. The seven basic lines have in their
caboclos lines denominated as its elements.
These caboclos lines (as) maintain a pure correspondence with the Seven Lines Umbanda, as
they work with pure energies associated with specific ways of beings, looking rebalance energy,
radiate directly as their primary or basic or elementary energy bodies body that is the basis of
other bodies (plasmas) of spirits (both embodied and disembodied).
