Action: Provides passive immunity to rabies
Indication:

Active Immunization Against Rabies.

Contraindicated:

Immunization prior to exposure it is advisable to avoid preexposure (prophylactic) immunization in individuals with acute
disorder requiring treatment, if complications arise after
vaccination, this should be considered contraindication for
further administration of the same vaccine, util causes of the
complications have been clarified. In individual with known
allergy to one of the constituents of Rabipur, use of vaccine is
contraindicated.

Usual Dose: 0.2 mL ( 0.1 per sides) or (0.2 one site)

Drug Formation: 1 mg vial

Drug Interactions:

In patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy or with

congenital or acquired immunodeficiency, the response to the
vaccination may be reduced or uncertain.

Administration of immunosuppressive medication and

antimalarial compounds during treatment after exposure
should be avoided.

Rabies immunoglobulins should only be administered at the

recommended dose. The immunoglobulins should neither be
given at higher nor lower does than those recommended, nor
should they be repeatedly administered, as this may be
reduce the effects of rabies vaccine given at the same time.

Side Effects: Pain at the injection site, redness, swelling, headache,

fatigue,sweating, slight fever,

Nursing Consideration:

Ask patient when last tetanus immunization was received;

physicians order a booster at this time.

Clean wound thoroughly with a soap and water; this is the

best way to control the rabies virus.

Assess when was the patient bitten and if he has already been
shot with anti-rabies on other centers or hospitals.

Make sure that 10 rights in administering the medication is

observed.

Ensure that the dosage is right.

Patient Teaching:

Tell patient to report any untoward reactions.

Inform patient that local reactions may occur at injection site.

Instruct him to notify prescriber promptly if reactions persist
or become severe.

Tell patient that a tetanus shot and skin testing also may be
needed.

Tell the patient when to come back

Instruct the patient to refrain from eating chicken, egg or any

foods that are rich in allergens. and eat green leafy
vegetables

Question: Why is PCEC (Rabipur) injected via ID?

=> In the drug literature and drug facts that I've read,
PCEC is being administered intramuscularly, however,
we administer it intradermally so that the absorption
will not be too fast nor too slow.
