First Aid at Work 3 Day HSE Approved


This 18 hour course run over three days is substantial. It trains the candidate to be a fully qualified first
aider with the skills to deal with any situation. It equips the candidate to administer, with confidence, a
wide variety of first aid training techniques in the workplace. It will provide the first aider with the tools to
administer first aid in an appropriate and safe manner without endangering themselves. Also included in
this course is how to deal with the aftermath accident reporting, disposal of clinical waste and support.
The courses can be adapted to suit the needs of the company and the relative accidents that may occur
within that environment.
FAST, in conjunction with Qualsafe Awards, will award Certificates and wallet size cards to successful
candidates. Please note: Requalification is required every 3 years.

Who is this course aimed at?


This course is aimed at those who are to the designated first aiders in their workplace. The course contents
ensures that you are fully first aid trained and equipped to meet the needs of the First Aid at Work HSE
Regulations.

Topics covered:
The role and responsibility of the first aider
Principles of first aid
Prevention of cross infection
Assess situations and carry out appropriate action including informing emergency services
Carry out Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation basic life support
Breathing management
Managing unconscious casualties
Assessing and treating wounds and bleeds
Treating anaphylaxis
Treating shock or sudden poisoning
Treating burns, poisoning and eye injuries
Treating common major and minor illnesses
Managing asthma attacks and choking
Fractures, dislocations and head injuries
Managing epilepsy and diabetes
Record keeping and equipment use
Legal aspects and secondary surveys
Deal with chemical contamination and poisons
Recognise and treat sprains, strains, dislocations and fractures
Know when and how to move casualties safely

Attendees:
This course requires a 2 day requalification course every three years. It is highly recommended by the HSE
that 3 hour annual refresher courses are taken in order to ensure skills and updates are maintained.

Certification
On successful completion of this course which includes a multiple-choice question paper and practical
exercises, each candidate will receive a nationally recognised First Aid at Work 3 Day Certificate valid for
three years.

First Aid at Work 2 Day Re-qualification


This course is designed for all those who have a valid and current First Aid at Work certificate. This course
re-qualifies the first aider if their certification is about to expire. The contents of this course are the same as
the 3 day course but trained as revision rather than new content and trained over two days, to include any
new legislation, regulations or changes to HSE guidelines and methods. This course is vital as confidence in
the skills may no longer be fresh in the mind and it is important to act accurately when applying life saving
skills to your casualty.
It is important to note that the this course has to be taken within a specified time before the 3 year time
period has expired. If this time scale is not met then the first aider must retake the 3 day First Aid at Work
course.

This course covers everything from the First Aid at Work 3 Day
HSE Approved course:
Assess situations and carry out appropriate action including informing emergency services
Principles of first aid and prevention of cross infection
Carry out Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
Managing breathing
Managing unconscious casualties and recovery position
Anaphylaxis and treatment for shock
Wound and severe bleeding
Burn, poisoning and eye treatment
Epilepsy, diabetes, asthma, poisoning
Managing choking
Recognise and treat major illnesses
Treating fractures and dislocation
Record keeping and secondary surveys
Managing cardiac circulation
Recognise and treat other miscellaneous conditions
All of the above in a safe approved manner, with no risk to self or third party

Attendees:
Those who have completed the 3 day First Aid at Work HSE course (valid for 3 years) and are nearing the
expiry date 3 years on must complete this course in a specified time scale in order to remain a registered
certified first aider in the workplace.

Certification
On successful completion of this course, a First Aid at Work Certificate and wallet sized certification id card
will be awarded to keep on ones person. Valid for three years. It is highly recommended that a 3 hour
annual refresher courses is taken to maintain the vital skills and update any information.

Emergency First Aid at Work Course


This 1 day EFAW course is designed to cover, in-depth, the basics of first aid.
This course is suitable for workers in any industry. This course is designed for the workplace where an
employers assessment of First Aid requirements identifies that a full FAW trained First Aider is not
necessary but an Appointed Person Emergency First Aid is not adequate and requires more indepth training.
It enables the person to respond promptly, safely and effectively to an emergency with confidence. EFAW is
a legally recognised qualification. FAST in conjunction with Qualsafe Awards will award Certificates and
wallet size cards to successful candidates. Please note: Requalification is required every 3 years. Annual
refreshers are advised.
