Responding to business needs

Data Centre engineering and integrations should design
in line with the business requirements:
What are the IT (and non IT) business requirements?
What is the green IT target (energy saving, footprint
saving)?
What is the IT strategy (virtualization, high density, etc)
What is the sustainability strategy?

Data Centre Design: Being Strategic

Data Centre Infrastructures (power, cooling, etc) must be
specifically designed and engineered.
Executives regard IT infrastructure as a commodity. Thats a mistake. Yes,
components such as servers and storageeven some support processes, like
the monitoring of applicationshave been commoditized. Even so, an effective
infrastructure operation creates value by making sound choices about which
technologies to use and how to integrate them. A technology product
purchased from a vendor may be a commodity, but the ability to bring
together hardware, software, and configure systems to create business
value is strategic. - McKinsey

A good and reliable system is only achievable by design.

Green IT? Energy efficiency? We want to do

more with less!
Sometimes we are victims of a growing
greenwash phenomenon. Organisations use
Green IT and PUE concepts as marketing
tools.
The reality is that we want to do more with less.
We want to use less energy, less resources
and ultimately we want to spend less and still
achieve the same results.
Once we put all the speculation aside we need to
start thinking: how can we achieve our target?
Cabling Design and Sustainability

The answer is:

Cultural change and intelligent design

Power Usage Effectiveness

The PUE is defined as follows:

TotalFacilityPower
PUE =
ITEquipmentPower
The PUE can range from 1.0 to infinity. Ideally, a PUE value approaching 1.0 would indicate 100%
efficiency (i.e. all power used by IT equipment only). Currently, there are no comprehensive data sets
which show the true spread of the PUE for datacenters. Some preliminary work indicates that many
datacenters may have a PUE of 3.0 or greater, but with proper design a PUE value of 1.6 should be
achievable. This theory is supported by measurements completed by Lawrence Berkley National Labs
which shows that the 22 datacenters measured had PUE values in the 1.3 to 3.0 range. Other research
indicates that PUE values of 2.0 are achievable with proper design. However, there is currently no
comprehensive industry data set that shows accurate PUE statistics for datacenters.

IT vs Energy challenges
Cloud computing is leading towards larger corporate data
centres and higher densities.
Larger data centres (as opposed to distributed ones) can
be better managed and can have higher efficiencies.
It is estimated that the IT industry has the same carbon
footprint as the global aviation industry.
It is estimated that a medium-sized server has roughly the
same annual carbon footprint as an SUV vehicle doing
6.37km per litre.
It also revealed that the energy consumption of servers and
data centres in the USA has doubled in the past five years
and is expected to almost double again in the next five
years to an annual cost of around $7.4 billion.

IT strategies that are paying off

Efficient design & engineering
and systems integration
Virtualisation
There is no one size fits all solution.
The integration of an intelligent design and of well
selected technologies will provide data
centres with the flexibility that is required to
adapt to new IT requirements and business
needs. That adaptation will allow CIOs and
CEOs to achieve their energy and
sustainability target.

Measuring, monitoring and trending

is absolutely required to meet the targets.

Monitoring and trending will lead
the way to effective results:

Availability
Placing the unit in the row of racks moves the source of cooling closer to the heat load. This
eliminates air mixing and provides a predictable cooling architecture.
Monitors and actively adjusts cooling capacity to ensure proper server inlet temperatures through the
use of Active Response Controls.
Agility
Modular design increases agility by providing scaleable solutions to add cooling as demand
increases.
Total Cost of Ownership
Variable speed fans reduce energy consumption during off-peak cooling periods.

Reduced air distribution length scale
No water consumption from make-up humidification
Less overall energy used for cooling
Higher efficiency due to high precision control and
installation
Increases usable power and space for IT equipment

Less humidification required
Reduced Fan Energy
Less Complex Air Distribution
Enables Variable Fan Speed Technology

In Summary
More efficient data centres can be built. The technology
is available, the skills and expertise are available.
We can do more with less! If the proper cultural change
is facilitated and if intelligent design is implemented.
Energy efficiency is based on facts, the continuous
measuring of the data centre energy efficiency will
enable the required energy and carbon footprint
savings.
As well as a manageable solution over full life of the
Data Centre.
The design and integration of data centre should respond to
the business needs and IT strategy requirements.
