Unit 12: Computers in Art and Design Final Assessment

Relevant Departmental Notes: Your personal blog is regarded as part of your work and will be
marked accordingly, alongside your sketchbook
Evidence:

This will be in the form of sketchbook work, final outcomes,


research, photographs, blog books and written proposals.

Grading criteria:

Pass / Merit / Distinction are attainable.

English and Maths: This project will include functional skills in English and Maths. Please bear in mind your
industry requires eloquent use of English and accurate use of figures, to which end, the continuing
development of these skills are firmly embedded inside all your work.
Note on copyright and plagiarism: This process will require independent research. Copying from the internet
and additional sources is not appropriate and violates copyright and will be classed as plagiarism unless fully
annotated and credited. You must make your work your own. We need to see that you have an understanding
of the areas that you have researched. Copying work directly from ANY source will not be tolerated. If you
quote ANY existing material you must put it in quotation marks and in brackets, attribute the source / author.

TO THE NEXT VISUALLY OR AS A THEME OF CHOICE
THE ARE PIECES SHOULD BE MADE IN LARGE FORMATS BEFORE SIZED DOWN TO INCREASE THE
QUALITY OF THE FINAL PRINT OUTS!
OUTCOMES PART 2: USE OUTCOMES AND DEVELOPMENTS YOU HAVE PRODUCED THROUGHOUT
THE YEAR BOTH DIGITALLY AND IN APPLIED ARTS PROJECTS
PUT TOGETHER A3 PAGES IN PHOTO SHOP AND DESIGN PAGES THAT CONTAINS YOUR
ARTWORK, TITLES, SOME DEVELOPMENTS AND SUITABLE BACKGROUNDS
MAKE EACH SLIDE DIFFERENT, BE CREATIVE!
AT THE END OF THE YEAR YOU PUT ALL OF THEM UP ON A PAGE ON YOUR BLOG IN TUMBLER
AND YOU WILL ALSO CREATE A POWER POINT PDF PRESENTATION

We are looking for professional applied arts artists and designers to enter artwork for an upcoming exhibition.
The final product must be a series of post cards ready for print. These will be exhibited publically.
You also need to produce an A3 portfolio sketchbook; which is backing up your research, studies and
developments. You need to show evidence of research about the potential of using computers in the art and
design industry. Furthermore you need to present a creative digital portfolio at the end of the year which
contains all outcomes you have made through the year including some relevant developments

TASKS:

you need to learn and understand
WORK SHOP BASED PERIOD WEEKLY TASK WILL BE PUT UP ON TUMBLR BEFORE EACH LESSON
(SEPTEMBER -DECEMBER) P1 P2
You will be learning a range of skills in how to use source material to create digital artwork
ANALYSIS OF THE BRIEF (JANUARY)
How to Analyse a Brief sheet will be provided. You also find it in the How to blog in Tumblr. If you havent been given assistance here,
please ask. Write, save and print your analysis document. Your analysis can also be uploaded in Tumblr
Discuss what the THEME can be or how the post cards can be linked visually.
It can be about anything you want. They could have an ideological message; like say something about how we treat our planet or; how
to behave in a better way as humans or; accepting and embracing that people are different around the world. It can be from nature or
the sea, or it can be about music, love, seasons, moods, children, animals, fashion, birthday, friendship and the list goes on. Anything
you are interested in can be the theme. The most important thing here is that your artwork SENDS A MESSAGE visually! Also establish
that the designs can be aimed towards a particular age group, in which you choose before you start your work
IDEAS AND DESIGN DEVELOPMENTS (JANUARY FEBRUARY) P2 M2 D2
Generate ideas, thumbnail sketches and develop these further. Experiment with a range of techniques, materials and formal
elements when carrying out your design developments
Add annotations on the progress and suggest improvement or how to make changes to your post card designs
PREPARE SOURCE MATERIAL (FEBRUARY MARCH) P2 M2 D2
Prepare all the different parts you will use as mixed media source material for you artworks
Materials can be; pencil, paint, charcoal, inks, print, dyes, fabrics, paper, card, magazines, yarn, string , stencils, found
objects, adhesive, canvas, surfaces, all sorts of papers and cards etc.
Methods can be; drawing, painting, splashing, rolling, sponging, tracing, masking, printing, line, texture, observational
drawing, abstract, organic forms, grids, letterforms, collage and processes using computer software (Photo Shop)
Processes can be; drawing, painting, collage, montage, mono print, relief print, embroidery and own photography
Tools can be; brushes, boards, easels, rulers, scissors, blades, guillotine, glues, rollers, lino blocks, cutting tools, technology,
camera and ICT You need to demonstrate that you can use correct technical terminology

Make changes to improve your work during the process and annotate what you do along the way

Digitize (scan) your outcomes and resize

Before making digital outcomes you should firstly describe the uses of computers in the design and art industry, and what is available
out there for digital artists and designers. Use your imagination and research skills to find out more about how computers can be used
to promote creativity. Look at how this is done around the world. International trends are very strong in this context. Case studies of
techniques.

Mont the cards to make them look real. To be printed in a minimum of 300dpi
Complete the slides of all your work through the year as described in the brief; in A3 landscape to upload to Tumblr

UNIT DESCRIPTIONS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:


UNIT 12: Computers in Art and Design (FINAL ASSESSMENT)
This unit will enable learners to develop skills and understanding of the use of computers in art and
design. They will research existing applications of computer use, and develop creative responses
through their own study and production of computer-based art and design work.
1. Understand the potential of digital media in contemporary art and design practice
2. Be able to select materials for digital experimentation
3. Be able to produce work using digital art and design techniques

GENERAL TASKS:

Make a detailed time management plan to make sure you keep the deadline
Gather as much information you can based around the theme through drawing, photography, collecting visual information from magazines,
exhibitions, newspapers etc.
Primary sources:
your own photographs, drawings or anything else first-hand you produce. Also letters, interviews, newspaper
articles, first-hand account of the artwork (that means go and see the work if possible)
Secondary sources:
Any material of analytical character which describes, and/or synthesizes primary sources (see above).
Secondary sources include reviews, reference books, textbooks, etc.
Use the library and research from relevant sources effectively and consistently.
Start making and collecting images that explore your theme.
Analysis of the Brief(s)
Develop work from your research which shows a sense of direction and strength of idea.
Learn new skills and processes as part of your investigation and research.
Complete all studio work and respond to homework requests regularly.
Provide analysis of your work.
Produce sketchbook/ port folio presentations.
Provide a proposal
Evidence of development.
Experiment with different media and techniques.
Produce outcomes.
Evaluate work in relation to the briefs.
