MV CABLE TRENCH (D-DT-0854)

5.

Is the MV cable trench excavation in accordance with D-DT-0854 sheets 1 to

5 as applicable?
Note 1: If the trench depth is >1.5 m, shoring is recommended. The OHS Act
Construction Regulations take precedence at all times.
6. Where there are other services exposed that will run parallel to or cross the
MV cable to be installed, is the installation in accordance with DT-0854 sheet
7?
Note: Services that are not shown in the design document shall be
communicated with the project engineer.
7. Where the surface to be excavated requires permanent re-instatement, has
the surface cut been made with an edged tool and been made as cleanly and
evenly as possible?
8. Has the project engineer approved any variations from the depth specified in
D-DT-0854?
Note 1: Variations are to be kept to a minimum.
9. When a change in trench depth is necessary, does the bottom of the trench
rise or fall gradually and smoothly?
10. Have the cable trenches been kept as straight as possible?
11. Has the inner radius of trench bends been kept tight, however never less than
the minimum bending radius of the cable?

Note 1: D = overall diameter of cable.

12. Has the material (e.g. soil) excavated from the trench been placed adjacent
to the trench leaving a walkway of at least 500 mm on both sides of the
trench?
Note 1: Damage to adjacent hedges, trees, drains or other property along the
cable route shall be prevented as far as is reasonably practical.
Note 2: Where this is impossible, the material may, with the Project
Engineers approval, be removed from the site and returned for back filling.
13. Are excavations not endangering the foundations of adjacent building?
14. Are excavations not endangering stability of fences or other structures?
15. Are excavations not endangering the stability of above ground services?
16. Are excavations not exposing underground services?
17. Are excavations adequately protected by a barrier or fence at least 1 m high?
Note: Warning or danger tapes only are not acceptable as barricading.
18. Are excavations provided with warning illuminates or clearly visible indicators
at night or when visibility is poor?
19. Are bypasses to deviate traffic from portions of the road affected by
construction in place (where applicable)?
20. Are access ways (e.g. temporary wooden bridges / steel plates) in place for
pedestrians/vehicles requiring access to properties affected by the
construction work taking place?
21. If steel plates are used to allow vehicular access across a trench, is the
surface secure and skid-proof?
Note 1: The installation shall be in accordance with a design done by a
professional civil/structural engineer.
Note 2: The plates shall be installed flush with the road and supported on Ibeams and/or pinned to the road surface to prevent it moving.
22. Have special precautions been taken to prevent damage to other services in
the vicinity of excavation (where applicable)?
23. Before installing bedding soil, is the trench bottom level and free of loose
stones?
24. Is the trench bedding (and blanket soil for around the cable) in accordance
with the SANS 10198-8 requirements for bedding?
25. Has the bedding soil (imported/sifted) been verified to determine its suitability
in accordance with SANS 10198-5 and has the soil consistency remained
consistent?
Note 1: If the soil is sifted on site, a 12 mm mesh may be used.
Note 2: Sand with spherical particles that cannot be suitably compacted shall
not be used.
26. Has the bedding soil been installed and compacted in accordance with D-DT0854?

MV CABLE PIPE DUCTS (D-DT-8018)

27. Has cable crossing roads and railways been installed in PVC/PE pipes (DDT-8018)?
Note 1: Axial spacing shall be at least equal to the cable spacing in the direct
buried sections.
Note 2: For 1-core cables, non-ferrous pipes must be used to avoid the
effects of magnetic induction.
Note 3: Trench less technologies (e.g. bulleting) should be used where
possible.
28. Has cable crossing rivers or using pipe-jacked tunnels been installed in
accordance with either D-DT-0895 or D-DT-0896?
29. Is the internal diameter of the pipe at least 1,5 x D?
Note 1: D = overall diameter of cable.
Note 2: The diameter of the cable pulling eye must be taken into
consideration when selecting the diameter of the pipe.
30. Are all directly buried pipes surrounded by a minimum of 75 mm of concrete
(min strength shall be 15 MPA)?

31. Have 110mm diameter pipes generally been used for the fibre optic cable
duct (pilot cable) and pulling bonds?
32. Do the pipe ducts, where possible, project a minimum of 1 m beyond the kerb
lines and do they project a minimum of 3 m for railway crossings beyond the
outermost rails?
Note 1: For dual carriageways and divided highways, the pipes shall continue
in an unbroken line under the central divider.
33. Do the bending radii of the pipe ducts not exceed the cable minimum bending
radii given above?
34. Are all pipes sealed until the cable is installed?
35. Have spare pipe ducts been installed for road, railway, river and other
services crossings as specified by the project engineer?
36. Have the pipe ducts been plugged at each end to prevent backfill entering the
pipe prior to installation?
37. Have spare pipe ducts been sealed at the ends to prevent the ingress of
water, vermin and backfill material?
