INTRODUCTION

Healthcare professionals around the world often use Body Mass Index
(BMI)

when

determining

whether

patients

are underweight,

healthy

weight, overweight or clinically obese. People who are clinically obese have a greater
risk of developing diabetes, stroke, some cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.

BMI has its drawbacks however. It does not take into account the patient's body
fat content versus lean tissue (muscle) content. The body mass index, or BMI, is a metric
used to estimate the amount of body fat a person has.

Though BMI doesn't measure body fat directly, it correlates with other direct
measures of body fat, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC
2008).

Healthcare professionals are adopting mobile technology too; however, there are
precautions to be taken. Physicians and healthcare workers who promote using mobile
Health apps may be violating privacy laws if an app doesnt comply with the HIPAA
Security Rule. While there are tangible benefits in healthcare-related apps, one must
understand the pitfalls of using this largely unregulated software.

The researcher choose to developed a mobile application for Body Mass

Index(BMI) and to study about mobile health service due to three different factors; first

for Patient Engagement Healthcare apps are a convenient tool to keep patients engaged
in ongoing treatment plans. Patients have real-time access to medical records, post-visit
instructions, pill reminders, and much more. Second Increased Efficiency and Time
Saving Many mobile apps provide efficiency and time-savings. Now physicians have
immediate access to patient information. Patients save time by not having to re-visit the
office to pick up test results and through scheduling appointments online rather than by
phone. And lastly, Healthcare Cost Reductions - One example of how mobile Health
apps can reduce costs is when patients with chronic disease utilize an app to transmit
health measurements directly to their physician or specialist. This reduction in routine
office visits alone can significantly reduce health care costs.
Having a smartphone looks to be the trend of the future of wireless
communication. Smartphones are designed to be handheld computers to give users access
to information right in the palm of their hand(Google, 2012). The biggest benefit of smart
phones is that anybodyis never out of touch (The Benefits of Smart Phones, 2014).
Mobile applications are considered to be one of the fastest growing trends in information
systems industry (Eddy, 2011).Despite of the many competitions brought by Apple,
Windows and Blackberry, Android is still leading in the market with a total of 79 percent
as of the second quarter of 2013 (Ranger, 2013).
BMI stands for body mass index. It is a measurement of a persons weight relative
to his or her height. It is an indicator, not a direct measurement, of a persons total body
fat. BMI is an indicator of total body fat and is therefore an indicator ofhealth risk. As
body fat or BMI increases, especially from values equal to or greater than 30, health risks
increase (Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, 2000).

The Cavite State University (CvSU) Main Campus, including CvSU-Child

Development Center (CDC) and CvSU Science High School (SHS), has a thousand
number of student population. According to the assessment conducted by the proponents,
20 students out of 25 use smart phone (Appendix Figure 4).As the mobile applications
being the fastest growing trend in information systems and as the higher population of
smart phone users among the CvSU students, the researchers come up with the idea of the
development of mobile application for Body Mass Index (BMI) computing with health
tip generation. A mobile application in which calculation of BMI, generation of health
tips and related diseases is available for the students convenience.

Statement of the Problem

The main problem of the study is to develop a mobile application for Body Mass
Index (BMI) computing with health tip generation.
Specifically, the study aims to answer the following question:
1. What are the Demographic profiles for corresponding nutritional status;
a. Age
b. Weight
c. Height
d. Nutritional Status
2. What are the health tips that are appropriate to the identified health status;

3. What is the level of efficiency and utilization of the students regarding of the
developed application;
4. What is the level of efficiency of the developed application using the different
system testing as compared to the level of utilization of the students?
5. Identify the requirements needed

to describe the problems through

preliminary investigation, interview, and survey

6. Critically study the information gathered using Ishikawa diagram
7. Develop a mobile application using Java as the development language and
Eclipse as the software development tool;
8. Evaluate the developed system by undergoing different system testing and
implement the system and be accepted by the students
9. To inform the students about their nutritional status and provide health
information using the e-application developed

Hypothesis
H1: There is no significant difference perceived level of efficiency of the
developed application among students
H2: There is no significant difference between the level of utilization of the
necessary students when grouped according to:
a) Age
b) Year Level

c) Sex
d) BMI

Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to develop a mobile application for Body Mass
Index (BMI) computing with health tip generation.
Specifically, the study aims to:
1. What are the Demographic profiles for corresponding nutritional status;
a. Age
b. Weight
c. Height
d. Body build
2. To develop health tips that is appropriate to the identified health status;
3. To determine the level of efficiency and utilization of the students regarding of
the developed application;
4. To evaluate the level of utilization of the developed mobile application by the
students
5. To evaluate the developed system by undergoing different system testing as
compared by the level of utilization of the student.
6. Critically study the information gathered using Ishikawa diagram;
7. Design the software with the use of Unified Modeling Language (UML) tool;
8. Develop a mobile application using Java as the development language and
Eclipse as the software development tool
9. Evaluate the developed system by undergoing different system testing
A. Significance of the Study

This study aims to provide baseline information for further interventions. This
section will provide brief description on the various significances of the study given the
following categories Nutritional, Institutional, and Health
To Cavite State University this study will contribute to the University Health
Section because this will provide knowledge about the current status of the students with
their BMI status this will also help in updating the health informatics of the said
University.
To the Students of Cavite State University, hopefully this study will eventually
help them to become more aware of their nutritional status with the help of mobile
application and the tips generated in the said application
To the Commission of Higher Education (CHED), as a organization that
concern the welfare of the college students the result of the study could help them in
understanding the current nutritional status and health threats proposed in the study with
this knowledge they can probably organize a seminar that concerns the health issues and
nutritional status of college students.
It also motivate the Future Researcher to start a study regarding the nutritional
status and health threats of the college students on different universities.

Scope and Limitation

This study is focus on developing of mobile application for Body Mass Index,
Generating Health Tips Advice, and evaluating the body mass index among students of
Cavite State University Main Campus.

The Departments involved in the study are the CvSU-Child Development Center
(CDC) , CvSU Science High School (SHS) and College of Nursing under the age of 12 to
22 years old. this study will gather 100 respondents, 50 respondents coming from the
College of Nursing and the other 50 student will be coming from CvSU Science High
School (SHS) .
This study will not involve respondents who are not in the range of 12 to 22 years
old and not coming from the involve departments. It will not also involve respondents
who have metabolic problems and eating disorders.

Time and Place of the study

The development of mobile application for body mass index (BMI) will be done
on the computer laboratory of the College of Engineering and Information Technology
(CEIT) on the month of July. While the Evaluation and Testing of the said application
will be done on the College of Nursing and Science Education Laboratory School on the
month of August. And September.
