JANUARY - MARCH 1987

Discipleship has a purpose - to make us

into new persons. God has created us with
a capacity to be like Him. There are various
examples of what God had in mind. The
walk of faith may be seen in the example
of Abraham. The making of a leader Is
seen in Moses, and what real beauty is
displayed in Esther. It was not until Jesus
came that we were able to see how serious

God was. He points the way toward a total

reworking of human life. God is deter
mined to make us like him!

The Bible states "if any man is in Christ,

he is a new creature, the old things have
passed away; behold newness has come."
(2 Cor. 5:17) Paul says of our baptism "we
are raised to walk in

newness of life"

Again, he urges us to be transformed by

the renewing of our mind. Many more
passages of scripture could be added
which talk about this new life, this
transformation, this way of discipleship.

who we are, what we believe, how we

think, and what we do.

There Is much talk about being "born

again." What is overlooked is the idea of
"transformation" which is part of it. Con
cerning this, C.S. Lewis writes "it is not a
change from brainy men to bralner men: it
is a change that goes off in a totally dif
ferent direction -- a change from being
creatures of God to being sons of God."
This may be Illustrated with a jumping
horse. One could teach a horse to jump
better and

This

Transformation is not just improvement.

For Christians, it is christlikeness. We
always get more than we bargain. In
Christ, we find forgiveness. God wants to
make us forgiving! In Christ, we find
peace. God sends us into the tumult. We
gain confidence in Christ. God commands
us to be servants. He keeps pushing us far
ther than we want to go -- all the way to
Christlikeness. There is no middle ground.
It is christlike or nothing! It is for this
reason that many are surprised at the
things we do (e.g., 1 Peter 4:3-4). Our lives
are not patterned by the things of this
world but by Christ. God Is conforming us
to the image of His son. "The old things
have passed away, behold, newness has

mined to make us like him! This will affect

come."

However, these will suffice.

It should be noted that in 2 Cor 5:17,

Paul Is not trying to explain this new crea
tion. He is not urging us to become new
creatures, nor what we may become, nor to
put aside the old and work ourselves

toward the new. He Is merely proclaiming

what has happened to us In Christ! Earlier
he said "we all, with unveiled face

As I was sitting in my car listening to my radio and

waiting for the 2 o'clock news, on which the ex

long way from not being allowed to put up posters an
nouncing our vacation bible school to having this an
nouncement put on AFN radio (although they will still
not allow us to put up posters). It is aired as the sta

heard it several times and others tell me they hear it
quite often. A few people have come as a result of
this ad. Rejoice with us as some good things are hap

MiD-WINTER RALLY

Just after Christmas, over 100 Christians from

around Europe gathered outside of Balingen, West
Germany for a three-day rally. Based on the books of
Peter, the theme was "Challenging Discipleship." Fif
teen attended from the Landstuhl congregation. It
was a good time of fellowship and teaching.
One of the most intriguing parts of the program for
myself was a class on the use of computers in a local
congregation. There were several ideas given on how
computers could be used within a congregation as
well as a tool for evangelism. Some of the simple
ideas dealt with drills and practice, tutorials, and
simiiations (life of Paul, dynamics of the church). I
have taken some of these ideas and am beginning to
develop them with my computer. Some of this means
that I have to learn programming. I am looking for a
way to use the computer in conjunction with a youth
group (perhaps have a one-week computer instruc

tion camp, something to get them interested).

However, there are a couple of items which I could
use. First, if you have any ideas about how I could
develop this, i would be glad to hear from you. Se
cond, if you know of any "public domain" software
whch could be used along these lines, please send it.
I will be willing to pay for the material. Last, if you
know of any commericai material which could be us
ed, write and let me know about It. I have an Atari

NEW ACTIVITIES

We have begun some new activities here at Land

stuhl. With an eye toward growth and evangelism, an
"invite a visitor to dinner" program was initiated. This
simply means that different families will take the
responsibility to invite a visitor over to their home for
a meal (either on a Sunday or during the week). This
will allow each of us to be better acquainted.
We have also begun (although it was really started
during my furlough) a "get acquainted time" between
Sunday School and Church services. It has been
working out well as different people are responsible
for hospitality, greeting, and clean-up. It is a good
time for all to sit and talk and relax and enjoy each
other.

1040ST machine. Thanks!

Finally, we have also begun a calling program. I

was calling up people and asking "what are you do
ing?" When they said nothing, i told them I would be
by in 15 minutes and we would go calling. Now, peo
ple are giving one night a week to go calling. What

VARIOUS NOTES

Our annual "souper bowl" weekend was held In

January. I am always intrigued by the various soups

that are brought and am always surprised to learn

that there Is more than tomato and chicken noodle.

The bowling afterwards wasn't too bad either.

A church outing was held In February in which
some travelled up to Bad Muenster. This Is located
just outside of Bad Kreuznach. it Is a health resort
area. One of the most intriguing parts was the large
wails which surrounded one of the parks. We were

They lived In the Hahn area (about 60 miles away) and
would drive almost every Sunday to the services here.
In addition to this, a bible study was held in their
home on Monday nights. They will be missed here In
many ways, but I know they will be of service
wherever they are!
Some new people who have come are Mark
Cassidy and his two sons, Aaron (5) and Brian (4).
Mark works at the army hospital In Landstuhl. Mark is
always thinking of ways to get information about this
congregation out to the people he comes in contact.

He has written a small tract, which we will soon have

enthusiasm!

Sam and Letty Cable, along with their two children,

have joined us. Sam works for the army. They are
looking for ways to help us grow and even locate a
new building In which to work. They have a freshness
and vibrancy which is contagious.
Also, Perry Frazier has been coming to our ser

vices. He first came with a promise to himself that If

he heard anyone In the congregation read from the
New International version, he would come for the
next two weeks to hear what these people had to say.
During the communion meditation. Bob Ross read
from the NIV. So Perry had to keep his promsie. That
was over a month ago, and he Is still coming and
growing and learning.

ASCENSION AND CORONATION OF THE MESSIAH

David, by the Spirit, says, "The chariots of

angels; the Lord is among them as in Sinai in
the holy place. Thou hast ascended on high;
thou hast led captivity captive; thou hast
received gifts from men; even from the

filled with astonishment that any one should

more exultingly triumphant, shout, "Lift up

EVENTS OF THE PAST MONTHS

Aside from the usual activities connected

with the church here, i.e., calling and

preaching, we have had some special
activities.

In June, the congregation once again met

with Italians from Karlsruhe, Wolfsburg, and
even France for a joint service. Guy Mayfield
led in the all day meeting held on a Saturday.
Then, on Sunday, Charles Gresham, a pro
fessor from Kentucky Christian College,
delivered a message from the book of
Romans. This was followed by a pot-luck din
ner. Although these visits are brief, they are
very important to us because of the en
couragement we are able to receive from
fellow Christians. Even though the majority of
the work is done among the American
military, we do have some contact with Ger

crjJcifledbath_Lord and Christ-exaltecLhim a

mans. So it becomes important to us when

Israel and remission of sins.

In July, a group of us travelled to Italy for

our summer camp. This year, 47 were at
camp (8 went from Landstuhl). It was a time
of encouragement and good fellowship. This
year's theme centered around the book of
Philippians. I was allowed to lead a two day
session on encouragement. To state briefly
the main gist of what was said; Encourage
ment depends upon our wills, not upon our cir

the Holy Spirit, according to the prophecy of
Joel and his own promise. So soon as he
received the kingdom from God his father, he
poured out the blessings of his favor upon his
friends; he fulfilled all his promises to the
apostles, and forgave three thousand of his
fiercest enemies. He received pardons and
gifts for them that did rebel, and poured forth
abundantly all spiritual gifts on the little flock
to whom it pleased the Father to give the
kingdom. Thus commenced the reign of
Heaven, on the day of Pentecost, in the per

cumstances. I will make a choice of what to

do or say based upon what will strengthen or

build up the other person. Tiredness, attitudes
of others, or even bad circumstances are not

my motivation for what I do. To encourage is

our goal (e.g., a goal may be clearly stating
our thoughts), and this may differ from our
desires (e.g., wanting someone to understand
us). To confuse a goal with a desire may only
lead to frustration. This is because a goal can
be achieved by you alone, whereas a desire
involves the cooperation of another person.

As some of you know, the dollar has fallen

dramatically in the last year. It has gone from

and friends all the more. However, the impor

tance of the work compels us to stay.

During this time, some new families have

come and joined us here. Guy and Laura
Perkins began attending in July shortly after
they arrived in country. On October 4th, I im
mersed Guy into the Lord. Following that, Guy
turned and immersed his wife into the Lord.

It was simple, but a beautiful service. I would

ask that you would pray for them as they walk
in this new life!

Janet Aldrich has also joined us here at

Landstuhl. She is the sister of Susan Spencer
who attended here while her husband L. V.
was stationed in Pirmasens. Janet visited her

for two summers and is now here working as

a teacher for the school system.
John and Toni Marinelli have also joined us.
He is stationed with the army here in Land
stuhl. We have enjoyed having them and hope
they will grow in the Lord!

BOOKSTORE

Plans are now underway on beginning a

bookstore to serve the community here. For
a population of over 100,000 Americans, one
small Baptist bookstore (using a 1 5x30' room)
and Stars and Stripes bookstore (with a dozen
or so titles) simply do not meet the needs of

2.23 in June '86 to 1.69 in October '87. That

is 24% drop in value-buying power. To

translate it another way, $100 will only buy
$76 worth of goods now. Even though gas

costs $2.36 a gallon, when it comes from $76

rather than from $100, it does make life
harder.

I known that times are hard for most peo

ple, and I appreciate those who faithfully con
tribute towards this work in West Germany.
Deficit spending can only go on for so long,
however. If you are convinced that this work
is important, try to convince someone else or
another congregation in the next few months.
You may obtain a copy of my financial
statement by writing to my forwarding agent.
Thanks for your help!

CHRISTIAN HOPE

Peter, by the Spirit, says, "Blessed be the

God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
according to His great mercy has caused us to
be born again to a living hope through the resur
rection of Jesus Christ from the dead." John

testifies "Dear friends, now we are children of

God, and what we will be has not yet been made
known. But we know that when he appears, we
shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
Everyone who has this hope in him purifies
himself, just as he is pure." Paul expresses his
hope when he says "I consider that our present
sufferings are not worth comparing with the
glory that will be revealed in us." The whole
hope of the Christian may be summed up in one
sentence: "Now if we are children, then we are
heirs heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ."

Eternal Life, the riches of Christ, the glory,

honor, wealth and joy of God's only begotten
Son are enjoyed equally with all the saints.
Hope differs from faith. It looks only forward
to future events and objects. It does not look
back or at present circumstances. Paul says

"Hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes

for what he already has?" It desires and expects
good and nothing else. There is not one dark
cloud, not one dark speck in all the heavens of

Christian hope. Every thing seen in its realm is

bright, cheering, alive and transporting. It is all
desirable and desired. It is all "earnest expecta
tion" and a "confident expectation of things"
hoped for.

There are various degrees of hope; but in the

least degree of it there is desire combined with
expectation. Things expected are not always

desirable, nor are things desirable always to be

expected; but hope embraces promises that are
desirable, and expects the enjoyment of them.
For it is based on the promises of God (not on
mere possibility or even probability it rests
on covenants, promises, oaths given by God).
As we grow in our knowledge of God's oaths
given by God). As we grow in our knowledge of
God's character, of the fulness and richness of
the promises, hope, like faith and love, grows.
But the things hoped for by the Christian are
beyond description. Eye, indeed, has not seen,
ear has not heard, the human heart has not con

ceived the glories of the resurrection of the just

the new bodies, the new heavens, the new
earth, the new Jerusalem, the new society, the
new pleasures. According to the promise we
look for (expect) new heavens and new earth in
which righteous people shall alone dwell.
it has been said that if Christianity, or the
gospel, did no more than to free man from the
slavish fear of death, on this account alone it
would be worthy of universal acceptance. But it
does incomparably more than this. It plants in
one's heart a hope a full assurance of hope
that he will triumph over death and the grave
and forever live in the presence of this great
Redeemer. Do we not think and feel and sing:
"A hope so grand and so Divine,
May trials well endure;
And purify our hearts from sense and sin
As Christ himself is pure!"
Hope keeps a Christian's eye on heaven until
he has it in his hand.

But this is not the all engrossing aim and ef-

fort of a Christian man or woman. We have a

Guy underwent some tests and was told that he

work to do beyond what is due to ourselves. We

have to work for God and man, for the Savior

needed to undergo open heart surgery. They

flew to the Mayo Clinic and (from here, let
Thelma continue) "Guy again underwent many
tests and finally on November 25th underwent
open heart surgery. Guy made a satisfactory
recovery from surgery, and on Monday,
December 7th, we flew back to Johnson City.
Friday night of that week, Guy did not feel well,

who died for us and still intercedes for us. His

whole kingdom is a kingdom of priests and He

requires their aid and best efforts In his cause
and for which services he has promised large
honors and rich rewards. All the saints are to

labor with him and for him in whatever sphere

he has located them. He gives them grace and
glory. He credits them for a cup of cold water
given to any of his friends in need. The realiza
tion of that to which Christ has called and is

calling us in our faith and hope is the greatest,

strongest, and most enduring stimulus to call
forth and employ our whole energies and in
fluence. Let us arise and go to work in earnest
for the Lord. "Jesus Christ has destroyed death
and has brought life and immortality to light
through the gospel."
Adapted from A.C.

and on Saturday afternoon he was admitted to

the Medical Center. On Sunday morning we

realized that Guy was failing rapidly . . . Guy
slipped away quietly at about 11 o'clock."
Frank Smith, former minister of Grandview

Christian Church in Johnson City wrote: "Guy

was such an altogether alive person, we just
assumed he would go on forever here. Suddenly
we must realize not here, but, no less alive, go
ing on forever."

It was through his influence that the MidWinter Rally and the Summer Camp were
established. He pioneered the work in south Ita
ly in the years following WWII. Today, there is a
fellowship of Italian Christian Churches with
several third generation Christians serving in
positions of leadership. He also carried a deep
and special interest for the Americans serving
in the military overseas. He and Thelma spent
many hours contacting service families, en
couraging them in their Christian lives. He
helped in establishing the Military Christian
Fellowship (from which I receive most of my
contacts).
There are many different items which call for
our attention, but it seemed for Guy that the
one overall concern was a person's relationship
with the Lord Jesus. Added to that, he carried
with him a love for the restoration movement of

which we are a part. His conversation was often

of this movement and its principles. His con

cern was that we would not loose sight of the
place from which we had come. He often said,
"If I see farther than other men, it is because I

have stood on the shoulders of giants."

Guy had a dream. Of all the work which was
done in Italy, he would have liked to have seen a
building bought by the congregation in Rome.
He said that over $100,000 was needed to buy a
small storefront in the heart of Rome. As of yet,
only about $15,000 has been raised over the last

five or six years. A memorial fund has been set

up to honor Guy, and the funds will go to
undergird the work In Italy. Offerings may be

Guy is going to be missed. His love for the

work, his enthusiasm for Christ, and his con

greater can be said about Guy than his whole
heart was In the work! Thanks Guy until we

BOOKSTORE NEWS

As I wrote in the last newsletter, I am working

on setting up a Christian bookstore here. I have
done some legwork on this and have found that
I need a permit (which will take a while to get
approved). I have applied for this and should be
hearing from the government soon. I am also
talking with the government concerning taxes
and customs which will need to be paid.
Meanwhile, I become more convinced of the
need here as people continue to come into the
building thinking that we are a bookstore. I am
awaiting information from the states for the

"how to" of setting up a bookstore. Our plans at

present are for including books, music,
teaching supplies, cards and maybe videos in
this store. As I see what is available, I will be
able to better decide. Again, if you would be

able<|tohelp in this operation, please send a
