Problem Set 8-Due 12 November (Sets handed in on 10 Nov. will be returned on the Nov.12)
Ch: 33: 17-a only; Prob. A. Ch: 35: 1b,11,12, 26a,31a,QB,Q18,Q35
Ch. 33:17-a. Light enters a solid pipe made of plastic having an index of refraction of 1.6. The light
travels parallel to the upper part of the pipe. You want to cut the face AB (only the edge shown) so that
all the light will reflect back into the plastic after it first strikes that face. What is the largest that can
be if the pipe is in air? (Figure 33E.17 in book)
A

Problem A: A 45o right angle prism is shown below. The prism is in water. Light shines on the flat face.
(a) Draw the arrows showing how light travels in both glass and water. The index of refraction of the
glass is n=1.5. You should have numerical values for all angles shown in your drawing.
Water

Water
n=1.33

Glass

n=1.33

n=1.5

Chapter 35:Prob. 1-b only. Two small stereo speakers A and B that are 1.4 m apart are sending out
sound of wavelength 0.34m in all directions and all in phase. A person at Point P starts out equidistant
from both speakers and walks so that she is always 1.5 m. from speaker B. For what values of x will the
sound she hears be cancelled? Limit your solutions to x<1.5m.

Problem 11.
Two slits that are spaced 0.45mm apart are placed 75 cm. from a screen. What is the distance between
the second and third dark lines of the interference pattern on the screen when the slits are illuminated
with coherent light of wavelength 500nm?
Problem 12
If the entire apparatus of problem 11 (slit, screen and the space between) is immersed in water, then
what is the distance between the second and third dark lines?
Problem. 26 (a only)
When viewing a piece of art that is behind glass, one often is affected by the light that is reflected off
the front of the glass (glare), which can make it difficult to see the art clearly. One solution is to coat the
outer surface of the glass with a film to cancel part of the glare. (a) If the glass has a refractive index of
1.562 and you use TiO2, which has an index of refraction of 2.62, as the coating, what is the minimum
film thickness that will cancel light of wavelength 505nm?
Problem 31 (a only)
The walls of a soap bubble have about the same index of refraction as that of plain water (n=1.33).
There is air both inside and outside the bubble. (a) What wavelength (in air) of visible light is most
strongly reflected from a point on a soap bubble where its wall is 290 nm thick?
QB: In your own words, briefly describe what is meant by coherent light.
Q18: When a thin oil film spreads out on a puddle of water, the thinnest part of the film looks dark in
the resulting interference pattern. What doe s this tell you about the relative magnitudes of the
refractive indexes of oil and water?
Q35. Would the headlights of a distant car form a two-source interference pattern? If so, how might it
be observed? If not, why not?
