Disadvantages of Industries

Introduction
The production side of business activity is referred as industry. It is a busine
ss activity, which is related to the raising, producing, processing or manufactu
ring of products.
Location
Industries are usually located near areas where water is available and is near t
o a power source. The availability of raw materials and labour make the industry
more efficient. Accessibility to an efficient market place with a good transpor
t system or natural routes such as river valleys and flat areas make the movemen
t of goods easier. Industries that locate in depressed (development) areas may r
eceive financial incentives from the government. The amount of capital that the
factory has determines the size and location of it.
Important Industries
The main types of industries are primary, secondary and tertiary industries.
The Primary Industry is involved in extraction of raw material form the earth. I
t includes:

Agricultural industry

Mining industry

Fishing industry

Forestry industry
The Secondary Industry is responsible for converting the raw material obtained b
y the primary industry into finished goods. It includes :

Food industry

Textile industry

Automobile industry

Building industry

Sport good industry

The Tertiary Industry is involved in public service. It includes :

Banking

Health services

Education

Civil defense forces

Delivery services

Insurance
Disadvantages of Industries
- Wastage : Industrial waste is a type of waste produced by industrial activity,
such as that of factories, mills and mines, example - slag, fly ash and sludge.
It decreases the plant and animal life because of the pollutants and chemicals
emitted. Toxic gases also pollute the atmosphere, leading to many diseases. Examp
le, Industrial pollution accounts for 45 per cent of the total pollution in the
Pasig River of Philippines.
- Air Pollution : The emissions from various industries contain gases such as ca
rbon dioxide, sulphur and nitrogen, which contribute to acid rain, greenhouse ef
fect and diseases. Example, the Environmental Protection Agency studied that ind
ustrial pollution causes 50% of the pollution.
-Water Pollution : Dumping of various industrial waste products into water sourc
es result in polluting the water. Such water pollution disturbs the balance of t
he ecosystem inside, resulting in the death of various animal and plant species
present in the water. Example, the Citarum River in Indonesia was the dirtiest r
iver in 2008.
-Land Pollution : Industrial wastes contain large amounts of various chemicals w
hich get accumulated on the top layer of the soil, resulting in loss of fertilit
y of the soil, thus affecting plant growth. Example, there are more than 300 pol

lutants from over 8,000 industrial or commercial facilities across Canada.

-Diseases due to Pollution : Skin problems, respiratory problems, birth defects
and cancers can all be caused by pollutants. Toxic pollutants can get into our b
odies directly through skin contact or by breathing in particles or dust. Diseas
es such as typhoid, diarrhea, hepatitis and respiratory diseases can also be cau
sed due to water pollution.
-Traffic : Since there are a large number of people working in and around indust
ries, the number of vehicles used will be more. This does not only contribute to
pollution, but the traffic congestion in the city too. Example, Warsaw is the m
ost congested city in Europe.
-Effects on the Environment : Other common effects of industrial pollution inclu
de damaging buildings and structures and releasing gases that cause acid rain an
d enhanced greenhouse effect. Their smoke affects the surroundings and change th
e flora and fauna. Example, the pepper moth which have turned from white to blac
k.
