Grade Level: 3

Subject Area: Language Arts

Learning Objective(s):

Standards:
L4 CCR Anchor Standard
Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases by using
context clues, analyzing meaningful word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference
materials, as appropriate.
L4.b Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known affix is added to a known
word (e.g., agreeable/disagreeable, comfortable/uncomfortable, care/careless, heat/preheat).

Assessments:
Students will participate in a class discussion during the PowerPoint presentation about prefixes.
After, students will complete a Wixie project about prefixes while working together and then
complete a worksheet individually.
Teaching Materials:
Smart Board
The students devices
Prefix worksheet
Wixie
Anticipatory Set: This is the hook of the lesson.
Present students with a word. Ask the students what they think a prefix is and then ask them to
identify the prefix of the word.
Ex. Do you guys have any predictions on what a prefix is?
After this I will explain to the students that the objective of the lesson is to be able to identify
prefixes in words.

Procedure: These procedures should be clear and descriptive enough so that another teacher
could deliver this lesson.
I Do:
1. On a PowerPoint, review with the students what a prefix is. Tell them that a prefix is a
letter or a group of letters added to the beginning of a word to indicate its meaning.
2. After explaining what a prefix is, give the students a couple examples.
3. Then ask the students what they think a root word is. For example, What do you think a
root word is? Explain to the students that a root word is the form of a word after the
prefix is removed.
4. After explain what a root word is, show the students a couple examples.
5. After the explanations, ask the students to retell what a prefix is and what a root word is.
For example, Can any of you remember what a prefix is? Can any of you remember
what a root word is?
We Do:
1. After the terms prefix and root word are explained, the students will then come forward
and identify them in several words.
2. Present the students with about 5-10 words that all have a prefix.
3. Have a student come forward and drag a prefix and rootword to the bottom and match
them together. After the student has created a word, ask the class if they agree. For
example, Does everyone agree that this prefix matches with this rootward?
4. Continue this process for every word until you are done.
You do:
1. Have the students turn on their devices and open up the assigned Wixie project.
2. As a review, explain to the students what a prefix is. For example, Students, remember
that a prefix is a letter or group of letters that is added to the beginning of a word to
indicate the meaning.
3. Also, let the students know that they are allowed to work together to complete the Wixie
project because its pretty hard and tricky.
4. After the students have completed it, go over it with them as a class.

TPACK: We chose to use whole group learning as the main pedagogical approach in our lesson,
therefore, using active expression on the SmartBoard as our chosen technology made the most
sense since it is a tool for the whole class. Secondly, having the students use Wixie while
working together also goes along with whole group learning.

UDL Implementation: Provide specific examples of components in this lesson plan (most likely
part of your procedures) that address the following:

Multiple Means of Representation: The information in the lesson will be presented and
given to the students in several different ways. The information will be presented through
a PowerPoint presentation, as well as a wixie project and a worksheet

Multiple Means of Engagement: Students will be able to be engaged through several

ways. Students who prefer whole group learning or those who are social learners will be
engaged by working with the smart board and working in groups with the wixie project.
Also, students who prefer individual work will be engaged with the worksheet portion of
the lesson.

Multiple Means of Action and Expression: Students will have several ways to express
their knowledge and move about the classroom. Students can express their knowledge
and move around during the flipchart portion of the lesson. They will be able to get up
and go to the front of the classroom and work with the smart board. Also, students will be
able to express their knowledge through a wixie project and a worksheet to close out the
lesson.

Closure: Before they complete their worksheet, review what was learned throughout the lesson.
Ask the students to explain what a prefix and root words are. For example, Can someone tell me
again what a prefix is? Can someone tell me again what a root word is?
Then explain the worksheet to the students and have them complete it independently at their
seats and collect it when they are finished.
