2 Introduction
Introduction
This section provides you with an introduction to Transit Satellite PE. You will
discover Transit's various applications and for whom Transit was designed.
In addition, the other programs in the STAR product line are described in
brief.
2.1
Transit
Statistics
The import statistics tell you the degree of leverage from previous translations, the number and quality of suggestions contained in the Fuzzy
Index as well as the amount of text still requiring translation.
Protected formatting
In Transit all formatting information is protected. You can concentrate
entirely on the text without worrying about accidentally changing formatting information. This includes cross-references and anchored
frames.
This means that in Transit there is hardly any additional work needed on
the translated text.
Editor
The editor in which you translate is optimized for translation.

You can check your translation directly in the editor using the optional
spellcheck dictionary.
Project management
2.2
Product variants
There are different versions of Transit, each having a different range of functions:
Transit Professional
This version contains all the functions for project management and
translation.
The Professional version is suitable for translators who work independently and for project managers.
Transit Smart
This version is a Professional version with restricted project management functions.
Transit Workstation
In this version there are no project import or export functions.
The Workstation version is suitable for translators who receive their texts
for translation from project managers. The project manager creates the
projects and handles the import and export.
Transit Satellite PE
This is similar to Transit Workstation but has fewer functions. It is aimed
at users who receive translation projects from a project manager and
send the translation back to the project manager.
You will find more details on the product variants in the product description.

4 Basics
Basics
4.1
Projects in Transit
4.1.1
Definitions for a Transit project can be compared to those which the project
manager defines for a conventional translation project. The project manager
defines everything that he/she would also define for a normal translation
project where a translation memory system is not being used.
An overview of the project settings which the project manager can specify is
provided in section 13.3 Project settings on page 139.
The project manager will need to carry out the following additional steps once
the project settings have been defined:
Import the original files into Transit. Please refer to section 4.1.2 How
does Transit import files? on page 20 for more detailed information on
how documents are imported in Transit.
Send you the project if you are to translate the project in Transit
Satellite PE, for example. Please refer to section 5.2 Receiving a
project on page 27 for more detailed information on how to receive
projects.
Once you have received the project you can start translating, (see section 6 Translating a Language Pair on page 33). When you have completed the translation, you send the translation back to the project manager, (see section 5.4.2 Sending a translation on page 31).
Rev. 010821
19
4.1.2
Before you translate a file in Transit, the project manager imports the file. During the import, Transit carries out the following steps, (see also Fig. 4-1 on
page 21):
Filtering
During the filtering process, Transit opens the source file and separates
the formatting information from the textual information. Formatting information refers to specifications for paragraph or character formatting,
changes in paragraph or character format and specifications for formatting templates, graphics etc. Transit inserts "Tags to mark the position
of the formatting information.
Please refer to section 6.9 Tags in the Transit editor on page 64 for
more detailed information on working with tags.
Segmentation
During import, Transit breaks down the text into individual, easily-managed sections known as "segments. These are the sections that you
translate. These are also the sections of text which Transit searches
through and replaces when comparing the text against existing translations.
The project manager can specify whether the segments should be comprised of paragraphs or sentences.
Please refer to section 6.8 Segments in the Transit editor on page 62
for more detailed information on working with segments.
Pretranslation
Transit carries out a pretranslation process in all languages selected.
The project manager can use the Send function in Transit to save all the files
required to translate a project into a single compressed file. The project manager then sends this file to you.
20
Rev. 010821
Fig. 4-1: Importing a document into Transit, translating and exporting the translated
document.
4.1.3
You can start translating as soon as you receive a project from your project
manager. Transit helps you in this process with the aid of a number of functions which make life easier for you. These include:
Rev. 010821
21
Customizing Transit
You can customize Transit to your individual requirements and working
methods, thus allowing you to work more efficiently.
Quality assurance
As you translate, you can assign a status to your text, such as
imported, "translated" etc. In this way, you maintain a check on what
still has to be done.
Of course, standard functions such as spellcheckers and formatting
information checks are also provided.
4.1.4
When you have translated the text in Transit, you can save the translated language files in a compressed file by means of the Send Translation function
and send this file back to the project manager, (see section 5.4.2 Sending a
translation on page 31).
The project manager can export the translated text out of Transit using the
translation he/she received from you.
During the export process, Transit puts the segments back into their original
paragraphs and reapplies the formatting information to the translated text.
This process produces a complete file in its original format.

23
Menus
There are two types of menus in Transit:
Toolbars
The toolbars along the top of the window contain buttons for frequently-used
commands. Transit has several toolbars which you can move and display or
hide.
Move the mouse cursor over an icon without clicking on it to obtain a brief
description of the icon's function.
Please refer to section 10.4 Arranging, displaying and hiding toolbars on
page 100 for information on how to customize the toolbars.
Status bar
The status bar displays information on the segments and tags.
4.2.1

5.1
Overview
Scope
With Transit, you can make a project accessible to one particular user group
only. You may also assign a project with all its settings to a particular customer. This ensures that projects are accessible to particular users only and
allows you to find projects quickly and easily.
5.2
Receiving a project
The project manager prepares a file with the extension pxf which you can
receive by e-mail or FTP or on a diskette/CD. This file contains all the necessary data you require for the translation.
You also receive the project settings which specify the files, languages, reference material and dictionaries associated with the project.
Then all you have to do is open the project and the language files and you can
start translating the text.
Rev. 010821
27
Select the pxf file you want to receive and confirm your selection by
clicking Open.
Transit displays the Project Name window with the project name and
scope of the project received.
To change the name and scope of the project, enter the new name in the
File name field and/or select the scope from the Scope list.
If you have entered a new name, Transit displays the New Working
Folder window with a suggested working folder.
To specify a different folder, click Change, select a different file hierarchy and press OK to confirm your selection.
Press OK to confirm the working directory displayed in the New
Working Directory window.
Click Save to confirm the name and scope.
It may be the case that a project with the same name as the project to
be received already exists on the computer receiving the project.
If so, Transit displays the following message:
The object already exists. Overwrite?
Cancel The existing project is not overwritten. Transit displays the
Project Name window again so you can specify a different name,
(see step 4).
OK Transit overwrites the existing project.
If you want to overwrite the project, Transit displays the Confirm
overwrite window with a warning message and the following question:
Are you sure you want to overwrite the existing
project?
This confirmation is a safety measure to prevent the existing project
from being overwritten inadvertently.
28
Rev. 010821
If a dictionary was sent with the project, it may be the case that a dictionary with the same name already exists on the computer receiving the
project.
If so, Transit displays the following message:
The dictionary "<Name>" has already been received earlier. Do you want to overwrite the dictionary
"<Name>"?
Yes Transit overwrites the existing dictionary in the TermStar
Received database with the new dictionary received.
No Transit creates a new dictionary in the TermStar Received
database.
If Transit is to create a new dictionary, Transit displays the The dictionary exists already window.
Enter a name for the new dictionary in the field and click OK to confirm your entry.
If the project has been sent with a dictionary, it may be the case that the
TermStar Received database on the computer receiving the project
already contains an older version of the same dictionary, but with a different name.
If so, Transit displays the following message:
An older version of dictionary "<Name>" still exists.
Do you want to delete the dictionary "<Old name>"?
Yes Transit deletes the old dictionary from the TermStar
Received database.
No Transit keeps the old dictionary in the TermStar Received
database.
Rev. 010821
29
Transit has copied the project settings, language files, dictionaries and the
reference extract file into the folders provided.
5.3
Opening a project
You can open a project once you have received it. Transit will open any dictionaries that have been assigned to the project at the same time.
Click on Open.
Transit opens the project selected. Any dictionaries which have been
assigned to the project are automatically opened with the project.
5.4
Sending a translation
When you have completed the translation, send it back to the project manager.
Please refer to section 5.4.1 Checking translation before sending on page
31 for information on points you must check before sending the translation.
Please refer to section 5.4.2 Sending a translation on page 31 for information on how to send a translation.

Rev. 010821
5.4.1
Is the spelling OK? You can check the spelling with the optional spellchecker.
Please refer to section 11 Project Management and Quality Assurance Functions on page 103 for more information on this topic.
5.4.2
Sending a translation
With Transit Satellite PE, you can translate a language file and send all the
translated language files back to the project manager as a compressed file.
When you send a translation, Transit copies the following files into a new
compressed file which has the extension txf. These are:
All source language files and target language files that you have translated and therefore changed
You can send the txf file created with the Send translation function by email, FTP or on a diskette/CD.
Rev. 010821
31
The txf file is distinctly larger if you send the entire dictionary.
Transit displays the Send translation window.
3
Select the folder and enter the file name into which Transit should save
the compressed file. The file is automatically given the extension txf.
Transit has copied the required files into a compressed file with the extension
txf. You can then send this file to the recipient by e-mail, FTP or on a diskette/CD.

If you want to stop working on a language pair, you can close the language
pair.
You must save the language pair beforehand so that you do not lose any
changes you may have made, (see section 6.2.2 on page 34). If you do not
save the language pair before you try closing it, Transit displays a message.
This prevents your changes from being accidentally lost.
You have to take different steps depending on whether you want to close all
language pairs or just a particular language pair.
Where applicable, Transit saves the language pairs and then closes them.
Rev. 010821
35
Select the source or target language window of the language pair which
you want to close.
Click the X icon in the top right-hand corner of the title bar in the window.
Transit displays the following message if you have changed a language

When you open the language pair, the source and target language text
appear in two separate windows.
The text in the target language window is mostly not translated when you start
translating and is therefore displayed in the source language. If Transit found
matching reference material for segments during the import, it will have
already pretranslated these segments. These segments then appear as translated in the target language.
In the target language window, you now can overwrite the text which is still
to be translated. You will see the corresponding text in the source language
window as a check.
In the target language window, place the cursor in front of the text you
wish to translate.

If Transit finds an entry in the dictionary for a word in the segment, this
word is highlighted in color in the editor. In addition, Transit displays
the entry in the dictionary window.
Please refer to section 8.2 Accepting translation from dictionary on
page 78 for information on how to accept a suggestion from the dictionary with a simple shortcut.
Press the shortcut ALT + ENTER if you want Transit to display a suggested translation from the Fuzzy Index for this segment.
Transit displays the result in the Fuzzy Index window. Please refer to
section 6.6 Using the Fuzzy Index on page 56 for more information
on the Fuzzy Index.
Please refer to section 9 Making Notes and Searching for Notes on
page 87 for information on how to make notes on a particular segment and read these notes.
Please read the information provided in section 6.7 Update markings
in the Transit editor on page 60 if Transit has partially pretranslated
the segment and inserted update markings into the segment.
Please refer to section 6.5.8 Formatting text manually on page 53
for information on how to manually format text in a segment, (e.g.
underlining, writing in italics etc.).
If there are tags in a segment, it may sometimes be necessary to copy
or delete them. Please refer to section 6.9 Tags in the Transit editor
on page 64 for more information on this topic.
Transit displays certain tags with their contents only (the contents of
cross-references or variables, for example). You can see that they are
tags by their color highlighting. These tags cannot be deleted.
Please refer to sections 6.8.5 on page 64 or 6.8.6 on page 64 if you
want to translate one sentence with two sentences or two sentences
with one sentence.

When you are finished translating the segment, confirm the translation
by pressing the shortcut ALT+INSERT.
When you press this shortcut, Transit carries out the following steps:
Transit changes the status of the segment.
The segment bears the status which you specified in the Edit |

Find
In Transit, as with every word processing program, you can search for any
string. Transit offers a wide range of options so that you can achieve an optimum result, (see section How to search for a string: on page 44).
Transit displays various messages if it cannot find the string you are searching for, (see section Messages if a string cannot be found on page 45).
To change the options which Transit uses to search for the string, click
More.
Transit expands the window for the Find and Options sections:
Find Select where Transit should search:
Down from the cursor position down to the end of the text
Up from the cursor position up to the start of the text
Entire text searches the entire document from the beginning of the
text
Match case Check this option if Transit should only find strings
which exactly match the case of the character string entered in the
"Find what" field.
Example: If you want to find display, but not Display. In the Find what
field enter the string display and check Match case.
Find whole words only: Check this option if you wish Transit to
search for strings as whole words and not as a part of another word.
Example: If you want to find play, but not display. In the Find what
field enter the string play and check Find whole words only.

You can also move the cursor to specific positions in your language pair. You
have the following options:
To a retained position
Transit can retain the current position of the cursor, similar to a bookmark. After you have checked something at a different location, you can
jump back to the retained position.
Transit does not save this position with the language file. Therefore,
Transit will not be able to find this position once you close the language
file.
In the Go to list, select the element to which you want to move the cursor:

You can not only format text by using formatting tags in Transit, (see section
6.9.3 Taking formatting tags on page 67), but also by manually assigning
bold, italics or underline font attributes to the font style. In this case, Transit
does not use the character formats that may have been assigned in the
source file or format templates. Instead it only assigns the bold, italics or
underline font attributes.
This means that you can format a word more quickly if, for instance, a word
is marked with quotation marks in the source language and you wish to mark
it in bold in the target language.
Click on the icon in the toolbar for the formatting you require:

Transit assigns the font style to the highlighted text and sets the appropriate formatting tags. The display and conversion of tags is dependent
upon the setting in the View | Display/Hide Attributes menu, (see section 10.1 Customizing the screen display on page 91).
6.5.9
The text in the source language is always write-protected so that you do not
inadvertently change the text. If this happened, the language pair would no
longer agree with the source document of the project manager and you would
be unable to use your translation as reference material.
However, it may be necessary to change the text in the source language in
certain situations - if you have found typing errors in the source file, for example. The project manager can then correct the error in the source document.
You can then change it in the source language in Transit.

Overview
The Fuzzy Index in Transit provides you with translation suggestions from
existing translations.
Transit activates the Fuzzy Index with the shortcut ALT+ENTER or when you
move the cursor to the next segment to be translated using the shortcut
ALT+INSERT.
The Fuzzy Index then searches for segments which are similar to the segment
to be translated. In doing so, Transit searches in the following files:
Transit displays translation suggestions in the Fuzzy Index window with the
following information:
All suggestions by the Fuzzy Index in the source and target languages
Similarity of the segments in the source language as a percentage
The origin of the translation suggestion
Context of the fuzzy match in the reference material
Please refer to section 6.6.3 Configuring the Fuzzy Index on page 59 for
information on the various Fuzzy Index settings.
56
Rev. 010821
6.6.2
Transit builds the Fuzzy Index, when you request a suggested translation with
ALT+ENTER or ALT+INSERT. At the same time Transit creates and updates
the Fuzzy Index in the background such that you do not need to wait for suggestions while you are translating.
Transit stores the fuzzy matches found in a temporary memory. As soon as
you have translated a segment, Transit adds it to this memory. In this way,
Transit can display new suggestions within seconds.
Transit displays the fuzzy matches it has found in the Fuzzy Index window,
(see Fig. 6-5).
You can open the reference file providing the fuzzy match if you wish to check
its context. You can also use this function to correct errors in the reference
material if necessary.

You have the following options for searching for fuzzy matches:
Rev. 010821
57
Place the cursor in the Fuzzy Index window in the most appropriate
suggestion and change it if necessary.
If the source language segment of a translation suggestion does not
completely match the current segment, Transit highlights the differences in a different color in the source language. Transit uses update
markings to highlight the differences in the target language, (see also 6.7
Update markings in the Transit editor on page 60).

Transit will now only suggest fuzzy matches in the Transit editor that at
least have the degree of similarity to your text specified here.

6.8.1
Overview
During import, Transit breaks down the text into individual, easily-managed
sections known as "segments. These are the sections that you translate.
These are also the sections of text which Transit searches through and
replaces when comparing the text against existing translations.
6.8.2
Segment status
A segment can have various status values, depending on the stage of the
translation processes the segment has reached.
You can read this segment status at any time in the status bar or in the Transit
scratchpad window.
The following status values are possible:
Imported/not translated
Partially translated
Translated
Spell checked
You can create various status reports if you want to record the status of all
segments. Please refer to section 11.2 Status reports on page 104 for more
information on this topic.
6.8.3
The segment status is displayed if you have chosen to display full segment
markers, (see section 10.2.3 Displaying the segment markers on page 96):

Transit will change the status value of the segment in which the cursor
is located to the status value you have defined in the Edit | Processing
Step menu item.
6.8.5
You can write the translation for two segments in a single segment. However,
if you use this translation as reference material at a later stage, the reference
material will not be correct. During the next translation of one of the two sentences, Transit will suggest either an empty sentence or two sentences as the
translation.
However, if you cannot avoid this, write the text in one of the two segments.
If necessary, move all of the tags into the one segment for the appropriate
words and leave the other segment empty.
6.8.6
Enter the two sentences in one segment. If possible, separate the two sentences with a semicolon instead of a full stop. Transit exports these segments
without problems.
6.9
6.9.1
Overview
During import, Transit separates the layout information from the text information and saves the formatting information in a special file for the project manager. The text information is saved in the language files. Transit inserts "tags"
in the place of formatting information in the remaining text. Tags contain information defining what formatting information from the original file will be
64
Rev. 010821
applied in their place. During export, Transit replaces the tags again with the
formatting information associated with them.
Please refer to section 6.9.2 Tags types and how they are displayed on
page 65 for information on tags and how you can display them in the Transit
editor.
If you move or delete tags, Transit may make errors when it merges the formatting information and the text. For this reason, please refer to the following
sections if you want to edit tags:
To avoid tags being changed accidentally, almost all tags are protected by
the "tag protection". In this way, Transit prevents you from inadvertently corrupting the language files as you translate. However, you can deactivate the
tag protection if it is necessary to edit the protected tags, (see section 6.9.6
Deactivating and reactivating tag protection on page 71).
If you have edited tags, you should always check the formatting codes before
returning your translation to the project manager. Please refer to section 11.3
Checking formatting codes on page 107 for more information on this topic.
6.9.2
Tags are text or numbers enclosed in angle brackets, (e.g. <mrk>). They can
also contain text which must be translated, (e.g. text in HTML files which
should be displayed instead of a graphic). The tag formatting complies with
the XML standard.
You can show or hide the tags. The display and placement of tags is dependent upon the setting in the View | Display/Hide Attributes menu, (see section
10.1 Customizing the screen display on page 91).

Transit places the tag at the new position. When you are moving a starttag, ensure that you also move the corresponding end-tag, so that the
formatting will be effective. An example of a start-tag is the start of the
bold-print tag <b>. The corresponding end-tag is </b>.
6.9.5
Deleting tags
Formatting tags which occur in the segment to be translated (e.g. tags for
bold print) can be deleted by means of shortcuts without the need for deactivating the tag protection. You will find a complete list of these tags in table
6-8 on page 68.
70
Rev. 010821
Transit deletes the tag completely. Transit will also delete the other tag
belonging to this tag which indicates the start or end of a type of formatting.
6.9.6
If you deactivate the tag protection, you can change, move or delete the tags
(which are otherwise protected) just like other text.
Caution
Generally only deactivate the tag protection to move or change tags. Reactivate the tag protection immediately you are done.
If you fail to do so, you might corrupt the language files and Transit may not
be able to export your language file, or the export may have errors.

Overview
You can make notes in Transit on each individual segment as you translate
and send these notes with the translation to the project manager. This allows
you to record your questions or comments on special translations.
The reader of your notes can then check your comments and provide you
with missing information.
In addition to notes, the scratchpad window contains a lot of other important
information on the segment in question. A detailed list of this information is
provided in section 14.1 Information in the scratchpad window on page
149.
9.2
If a multi-language project is being handled by one project manager and several translators at the same time, it is important to specify who should make
notes on the source and target languages.
The translator should always make notes on the target language only.
As a translator, your comments should always refer to the target language.
Rev. 010821
87
When you send the translated language pair back to the project manager, he/
she will want to retain his/her own notes and so will overwrite the target language file only and not the source language file.
Consider an instance where several translators working in different languages
send their language files back to the project manager. They have written
notes relating to the source language. However, these notes would be overwritten by the source language files from the other translators because there
is only one source language file.
Therefore, your notes will be lost if you have written them on the source language.
9.3
Making notes
You can make notes on each segment. You can find these notes later quickly
if, for example, you wish to correct the associated segment.

Status reports
Transit can provide you with a comprehensive status report on your
project so that you are always up-to-date on the status of the work and
can manage your project more easily, (see section 11.2 Status reports
on page 104).

You can save the report in text format. The individual values are separated by
tabs so that you can also import the analysis report into a spreadsheet and
edit it there.
Please refer to section 11.2.6 Creating a status report or getting statistics
on page 106 for more information on how to create a status report or get statistics on a project. Section 11.2.2 How does Transit count? on page 104
explains how Transit calculates the results given in the reports.

The report thus indicates the amount of work left to do, but not how much has
already been done. This means that it can only be used for project monitoring
and not for project billing.

Leading blanks:
Transit compares the number of spaces at the beginning of a segment
in the source and in the target languages.
Trailing blanks:
Transit compares the number of spaces at the end of a segment in the
source and in the target languages.
AutoCorrection
If the number of blanks at the start and/or end of a segment is different
between the source and target language, Transit corrects the target language automatically.
In doing so, Transit applies the number of blanks in the source language
segment to the target language segment.
The fact whether blanks at the start and/or end of the segment are automatically corrected depends on whether you have selected Leading
blanks and/or Trailing blanks.

Transit checks only terms that are not write-protected (in other words, tags
are not included).
For some languages you can also adapt the spellchecker to be country-specific - for national variants of French, German, Norwegian or Russian, for
example - or for different spelling conventions (e.g. old or new German spelling). Please refer to the "Transit Satellite PE Spellchecker Installation documentation for more information on this topic.
