Storm Water Drainage

7. STORM WATER DRAINAGE AT THE SITE OF THE CONTAINER

TERMINAL
7.1. General description
Drainage of storm water was arranged by splitting the site area into two zones:
The North Zone pertaining to berths 121 123
The South Zone, consisting of the whole remaining area of the site up to the entrance into the
terminal.
Within Zone 1, storm water is collected through two main longitudinal gutters arranged as a
traveled way, crossing five pipes discharging into the sea through the quay crown.
Zone 2 has been arranged to collect rainwater through two main pipes, respectively one on the
East side (Railway Terminal) and the other one on the Westside (along the access road). The
storm water from the access gate area is collected by a third pipe, discharging into the pipe of the
Railway Terminal area. All of the said pipes meet in the area of the Administration Building,
where the waters are taken over by a semicircular pipe and discharged through the penetration
into the main pipe at the bend of the Ro-Ro Berth.
Pipes of zone 2 have been sized according to the flow of water collected from all over the area of
the Container Terminal, the extension area included, together also with the effluent from the
drainage system of the Railway Terminal.
A system of open or traveled-way gutters bordering the roads lengthwise is flowing into the
above-mentioned pipes.
7.2. Calculation of storm water flow
According to STAS 1846-90, the design storm flow is:
Qp = m . S . . i

[l/sec] where :

m = is the coefficient of the design flow diminution, on account of the gutters storage
capacity in time and of the duration of the design rainfall, t;
m = 0,8 for t 40 minutes
S = the area of the drainage basin as per the design section [h];
= drainage coefficient according to area S;
= 0,85 for concrete and asphalt coating, and
0,75 for slab coating
i = design storm intensity, depending on the design storm frequency f, and duration, t
[l/sec,ha]

Storm Water Drainage

Calculation of design storm intensity

The intensity of the design rainfall i - is determined according to STAS 9470-73, requiring data
of the design storm frequency and duration.
Determination of design rainfall frequency
In order to determine the frequency of design rainfall in accordance with STAS 1846-90, the
assessment of the importance class of the utility is needed, according to STAS 4273/83

table 8: for drainage works performed on industrial sites of local importance, category of the
hydro-technical work (storm gutters) is :
3 - for stacking areas
4 - for remaining areas

table 13: for main permanent works, the importance class of the hydro-technical work (storm
gutters) is:
III - for stacking areas (of 3-rd category)
IV for remaining works (of 4-th category)

Frequency of design rainfall results from table 2 of STAS 1846-90, for economical units, as
follows:
1/2 - for stacking areas (of importance class III)
1/1 for remaining works (of importance class IV)
Determination of design rainfall duration
According to STAS 1846-90, the design rainfall duration is determined for the section
downstream the gutter length due for sizing, by means of the following formula:
t t cs

L
,
Va

[minutes], wherein

tcs time of surface concentration [minutes]

tcs = 5 minutes for areas having an average slope of 2 o/oo 5 o/oo
tcs = 3 minutes for areas having an average slope 5 o/oo
L length of gutter section due for sizing [m]
Va water speed inside the gutter [m/minute], that should range between values of
0,7 m/s 5 m/s, respectively 42 m/minute 300 m/minute
In accordance with STAS 1846-90, the minimum duration of design rainfall should be:
5 minutes for areas having the average slope above 5 o/oo
10 minutes for areas having an average slope of 2 - 5 o/oo

Storm Water Drainage

Determination of design rainfall intensity

In accordance with STAS 9470-73, the Port of Constantza is situated within area 5, for
which the intensity of design rainfall is obtained in the area where the flow calculation is
performed.
Values of design flow
The value of design flow was determined for each and every of the gutters at the downstream
extremity thereof, before its discharge into the manhole. The formulas and calculation procedure
are as above mentioned.
7.3. Hydraulic sizing of gutters
The coverage area of storm water collection was ascertained for each section of gutter and flow
calculations have been made according to chapter 1.
The minimum cross-section of the gutter was assessed downstream of the gutter section, in
consideration of taking over the incoming flow of rainwater, observing the waters flow speed
within a range of 0,7 5 m/s.
The actual cross-section of the gutter downstream is, in certain cases, higher than that used in the
calculations, namely the one resulting through starting from a minimum upstream height of 20
cm.
The gutter slope is as resulting from calculations, rounded to integer values, out of construction
reasons having however set a minimum value of 5 o/oo. With certain cases the slope was selected
to be equal the longitudinal slope of adjacent roads.
The calculation is briefly accounted for in the annexed table, and the meaning of used dimensions
is as follows:
b
h
Pu
Au
R

- gutter width
- gutters useful height
- wetted perimeter = b + 2b
- wetted area = b x b
- hydraulic radius = Au / Pu

- Chezys coefficient, calculated by Mannings formula C

n
V

- roughness coefficient (59 for concrete gutters)

- waters speed through the gutter = Q / Au

V2
- hydraulic slope, y 2
