Abstract The project objective of Electronic Door Message
(MyEdoor) System is to develop a graphical user interface (GUI)
with Microsoft Visual Studio application, testing the system
function and applying it into a real environment. The graphical
user interface (GUI) are developed and tested using a Microsoft
Visual Studio. Result of the development of this project is a UserFriendly graphical user interface (GUI) that will be able to
receive an input from the modem and send it to LCD.
Interfacing process will also be done. At the end of this project
the MyEdoor system will receive the input from the GSM modem
and will give the output to the LCD to display the information.
Conclusion the user friendly graphical user interface(GUI) will
be produce from the combination of software and hardware.

must for most of the people in the world today. It would be

wiser to make a use of this technology for information purpose
like news and its updates, real time reporting, live telecasting,
inclusive of various information which adds to the advanced
and busy life on daily basis.

3. Make a system which can be access remotely

MyEdoor project is the combination of hardware and
software. Writing a set of instruction code to tell the hardware
what to do is one of the thing that need to be consider in this
project. This system will allow the admin of this system to
control the incoming and outgoing message from the user or
admin itself. Admin will send a message from their phone and
only the admin can allow the system what to display in the
LCD, so that the student can view the message at the door.
This system will also help the student communicate with the
lecturer faster and better.
This project is an implementation to the idea of the
wireless communication between a mobile phone and a
microcontroller. Currently the main work that has been done
on this proposed system is through serial port to the computer
but not wireless. The system has to be reprogrammed to
display new messages. But in this new design, the systems
need not be reprogrammed to display new messages because it
is wireless. The user will send SMS from his phone and it will
be display on the electronic board which is being made up of
liquid crystal display. In the new system, when new messages
enter, the old messages will be deleted.
A.Problem Statement
1. The need of fast information transferring
In order to receive the fast information to some place, the
need of a system to transfer and manage the information is a

2. The need of notice board in educational sector

Communication between lecturer and student for the class
or lab schedule, sometimes change in the time table will make
the student confuse to go to which class. Remote controlled
notice boards at the colleges and universities, also at the time
of examination scheduling and result publishing
System that can be access remotely and wirelessly will
make the information transferring more easy than a system that
using a cable. Increase efficiency of information transfer.
Reduce the cost by reducing use of cable. Offer greater
flexibility and mobility for users.
B. Objectives
The objectives of this project is:
1.To develop electronic door message system using a
graphical user interface development software Microsoft
Visual Studio.
2.To interface and test MyEdoor functioning system.
3.To Apply MyEdoor system in real environment for further
Literature review will discuss about the system
development process using many type of software. Some
example of the software that is commonly used for system
development process is Microsoft Visual Studio, MATLAB,
Microsoft Visual basic 6 and other software. Review and
compare all the type of system development done by other
people using any kind of system development tools..
A. AT command
AT command are used to send an instruction to modem,
using a Motorola C168 for the hardware. AT is an
abbreviation of Attention, this is because every command
line will start with AT or at. Many of the command are

used to control wired dial-up modems, such as ATD(Dial),

ATA(Answer), ATH(Hook control) and ATO(Hook control)
and ATO(Return to online data state) are also supported by
GSM/GPRS modems and mobile phones[1]. This paper
also stated the basic command for modem to read, send,
list, and read SMS message.
B. Matlab SMS Sender
FIGURE 1 Matlab Sms Sender

Fig. 1 show the graphical user interface that been

develop by a MATLAB application, the application is for
send message by linking the application using email
account. Users are required to choose the cellphone carrier
before sending a message to another user. This application
only able to send message to another user and cannot
receive message from another user.
This function
send_text_message.m was develop by feng on September
2007. The command button create is to create a message
and sent it to user cellphone. The test button is to test the
sms sending process[2].
C. Microsoft Visual Basic 6 SMS application
FIGURE 2 Microsoft Visual Basic 6 SMS application

The application that being develop in Microsoft visual basic 6

also have more function and the system developer can add
more function like database, clock and the form window are
easy to be modified to make it more interesting.[3]
C. Microsoft Visual Studio GSM application
FIGURE 3 Microsoft Visual Studio GSM application

This application showed in above fig. 3 are being develop

in Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, this application able to read
text message that are send by user to the GSM modem, the
GSM modem will transfer the information or text sent by user
using a USB to RS232 converter. The user is using an
instruction in the Microsoft Visual Studio to read the data from
the string of the USB, this application will show the sender
number and the message that had been receive. This
application uses a declaration of Using System.IO.Ports, this
declaration are used to read the message from the USB port.
The methodology used to develop MyEdoor system and
the software used for developing MyEdoor system. This
project is developed according to the Software Development
Life-Cycle and the methodology used to develop this system is
process model of Prototyping model.
A. Planning Phase

Fig 2 show the SMS sender application develop using a

Microsoft visual basic 6, the graphical user interface allow
user to send message to another mobile phone using
MSWINSCK and msmapi ocx which is usually can be found in
windows /system folder. This system also has a database to
store the name and mobile number of the contact number. It
also has a date and clock display in the system to make it more
interesting. This application also can count the number of text
message sent to another mobile phone, but the problem of this
application only work with India mobile provider. This is
because the developers of this application are from India, and
the mobile compability of this application only is set to India
mobile service provider. Compare to the MATLAB text
message sender, this application that been develop in Microsoft
visual basic 6 are more interesting and have more function in it.

Planning phase is the fundamental process of understanding

why an information system should be build and determining
how the project team will go about building it. The planning
phase required developer to do five steps in this phase.
i. Identify the problem background
ii. Define the project scope and objectives
iii. Perform a research on exiting system
iv. Determine the development resource requirement
B. Analysis Phase
The research through a various types of system and trying the
functionality of the system. This step has been done in the
literature review step. Literature review is to understand the
system development software that is MATLAB, Microsoft
Visual Basic 6 and Microsoft Visual Studio. We also done a
research on a related work that had been done by the other
developer related this work. The developer also used all kind

of method in developing the SMS receiving system.

Understand about the system flow and how the system works.

this thesis. I could not have imagined having a better advisor

and mentor for my Degree study.

C. Design Phase

I would like to express my gratitude to all my fellow friend

who helped me during this research and thesis writing, and
lastly my beloved parents Mastan Gaga and Martina Limoi and
all my family member. Thank you all.

The design phase decides how the system will operate, in term
of hardwar, software. The GUI infrastructure; user interface,
forms, and reports will be used; and the specific program,
database, and flies that will be needed. In this phase, the user
interface, program design, and database design will carry out.
D. Implementation Phase
The implementation phase which the system is actually builds.
At the same time, program coding, testing, debugging, and
documentation will also carry out. The purpose of this phase
is to make this system into working and reliable system.
In The Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, The Most
Merciful. Foremost, I would like to express my sincere
gratitude to my supervisor Dr Ismail Saad for the continuous
support of my Degree study and research, for his patience,
motivation, enthusiasm, and immense knowledge. His
guidance helped me in all the time of research and writing of
