General Description:
The Platypus is a unique and endemic Australian monotreme (egg-bearing/warm-blooded). It is known
quite famously for its duck-like bill (which is actually soft and fleshy, and used in echo-location), its
ability to lay eggs yet raise its young on a milk-like substance, its beaver-like tail (used for steering in the
water) and its venomous hind-spurs which are located only on the males. The Platypus is located in
Eastern and South-Eastern Australia, it is primarily a fresh-water aquatic creature which feeds on
underwater grubs, worms, shellfish and carrion.
The duck-like bill, which many assume is hard like a bird’s beak, is actually soft and fleshy and is crucial
for use in echo-locating prey in the form of underwater worms, grubs and crustaceans. This beak is so
useful, that the echo-location can be used to find the juiciest of creatures, so the platypus can then pick
and choose what food would be the most appropriate. They can consume their own body weight in food
in 24 hours. The platypus has no teeth, but plates in its mouth which it uses to grind up its food. They
have a brown, woolly furred coat, and lower body temperatures when compared to mammals.
The platypus is shy and usually solitary, and has only bred once in captivity despite sophisticated
breeding techniques at zoos. It can softly call other platypi with a soft, puppy-like growl/croon. These
noises are also used amongst young platypi when growing. When mating, the two platypi swim in circles
before copulating. The platypus was originally considered a hoax by the scientific world, and was hunted
in large, damaging numbers in order to determine whether it was a hoax or not, and what sort of animal it
was. Additionally, the platypus is threatened today be predation by feral animals, and habitat destruction.
A baby platypus is called a puggle or a platypup.
Brief mythological associations:
The platypus is the totem animal of the Namoi and Manilla regions in Eastern Australia, and many other
regions as well. In the Gummaroi spirituality, platypus is responsible for night births and deaths, while
the echidna (another monotreme) is responsible for the daytime. The platypus is common in many other
aboriginal myths and stories, and also is a much-loved feature of Australian children’s stories. Further
research will yield much.
Please remember that if this animal is contacting you, it will often be the best resource for teaching you
what its lessons are. What I write is only intended to be a guide, it is not absolute, nor is it infallible.
