CAD DESIGN DRAFTING


COMPETITION HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENTS
2014 2015 DESIGN PROBLEM AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION
I. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
James and Wendy Ross want to build a new home for their family. They have three children.
James Jr. 12 years old, Lisa 8 years old and Adam 6 years old. Wendy is expecting their fourth
child later in the year.
Their oldest child, James is a paraplegic and confined to a wheel chair. The Rosses want to build
their new home so as James gets older he can have the freedom to be independent and develop
the skills he will need someday to live on his own.
They have selected a site for their new home. They have a few specific requirements that they
feel will be needed moving forward. They are relying on your creativity to provide them with a
functional and aesthetically pleasing design that will allow their family to live comfortably and
efficiently in their new home.
The residence must include the following rooms/areas:
1. Open, free-flow floor plan. This will give them a feeling of space.
2. Kitchen with eat- in- area
3. Living room / great room.
4. Dining room
5. Laundry/ storage area
6. Master bedroom with bathroom and walk in closet
7. A separate bedroom for each of the four children ( one of these bedrooms must have an ADA
compliant bathroom attached to it. )
8. At least one bathroom for the other three children
9. Half bath convenient to living/great room
10. Exercise space for all to use, as well as for therapy exercises for James Jr.

11. A wheel chair accessible patio with access to the back yard.

12. 2- Car garage with extra storage for bikes.

You may add other areas or rooms to the space as you deem necessary. The total living area should not
exceed 3,000 square feet. You should choose a house style that is appropriate for a house in your area.
Keep in mind the use of evidence based design, ADA accessibility and universal design.

Show building location on the site plan with the roof plan superimposed on the building location.
Show paving, walks, patio/deck and vegetation.

Indicate total building square footage on the drawing.


Indicate overall and broken dimensions of house.
Show walls, windows, doors (and door swings) and openings.
Show closets, cabinets, plumbing fixtures and appliances.
Show all changes in floor elevations, stairs and stair landing.
Indicate the name of each room or area.
Show dimensions locating walls, doors, windows and openings.
Show section cut marks.
Optional: Indicate furniture placement, indicate flooring material.

Electrical Plan
1. Show switches, electrical outlets, cable/internet cable outlets, lighting locations, fans, etc. for interior
and exterior of residence.
2. Show an electrical symbol legend on your drawing.
Exterior Elevation - - scale = 10
1. Two (2) exterior elevations are required. One must depict the front elevation and the other must
depict the right side elevation.
2. Show walls, windows, doors, roof and roof pitches.
3. Note all building materials.
4. Note drawing labels as front, back, left, right.

1. Show foundation walls, footings, and floors.

3. Draw a typical wall section @ Scale = 10 or Scale 1 = 10

PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS:
A. All submittals must comply with the requirements of the competition to be eligible for judging. All
judges decisions are final.
B. All submitted sheets shall be stapled at the left border with a cover sheet.
A 2 x 4 lettering block shall be placed in the lower right hand corner on each sheet
including the following information as shown: (may use the sample below)

D. DESIGN NARRATIVE/DESIGN CONCEPT
Submittal to include a Narrative/Concept statement on what the student feels are the positive and
appropriate elements in their design and how the design meets the project requirements.

Glossary

ADA - Acronym for the American Disabilities Act.


ADA compliant - Must follow the ADA guidelines. The latest guidelines were issued by the Dept. of Justice,
Sept. 15, 2010, in their manual 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
Aging in place - Remaining in ones home while growing old and modifying the home to accommodate
the aging process.
Design Concept - The phase of the design process is the ideation phase where ideas for details, sections,
elevations, and plans are sketched or written. It is also the phase where preliminary design decision and
documents are prepared.
Evidence-based design ( EBD) - A process for the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current
best evidence or findings from research and practice to making critical decisions.
Half bath - Bathroom with only a toilet and sink. There is no tub or shower in a bath.
Labels - Relationship of elevations, etc., to the floor plan, e.g.: North Wall, Kitchen; East Wall,
James Jrs Bathroom.
Open plan - The floor plan is open, free flowing. The space is not broken into several rooms.
Paraplegic - The person is paralyzed from the waist down, with no use of his/her legs.
Quadraplegic - The person is paralyzed from the neck down, with no use of his/her arms and legs.
Universal design - Design that can be used by almost everyone, including children, elderly, and mildly
disabled.
