When you make the decision to upgrade your current OS to Windows 7 there are couple of
ways to go about it. The most hassle free is complete clean installation. This method will
save you lots of headaches down the road. Follow this guide to help make your transition to
Windows 7 as smooth as possible.
Method 1 of 3: Changing your OS to Windows 7
check your specs. In order to run Windows 7 you must have at least a 1 gigahertz (GHz)
processor, 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM (2 if installing 64-bit), 16 GB of hard disk space (20 if
installing 64-bit), and DirectX9 graphics card with WDDM 1.0[1]Different programs will
have different system requirements

#3: Make sure you have enough memory

Memory is another fairly easy-to-meet hardware requirement for new Windows. To be
consired the capability, the PC must have at least 512 MB or RAM. Premium Ready
machines must have a minimum of 1 GB of system RAM. Most modern PCs will either meet
this requirement or be capable of relatively inexpensive upgrade.
#4: Evaluate your graphics adapter
Those of you looking forward to the new 3-D Aero Glass graphics will need to make sure
that your graphics adapter is DirectX 9 capable. WDDM (a Windows display driver model
for writing drivers) compatibility is also recommended. To be considered Premium Ready,
the graphics adapter must have a minimum of 128MB of video RAM. New Windows cards
require only 64 MB of video RAM. Unless you plan on using the Aero Glass graphics, there
is no reason to upgrade your existing video adapter if it's Vista Capable.
#5: Verify that you have sufficient hard drive space

With hard drive capacity constantly increasing, available space is usually not a major
concern. However, you should still be aware of the minimum space requirements for new
Windows and take a moment to verify that your system has enough free space. To install
new Windows, the hard drive must be at least of 40 GB in size and have a minumum of 15
GB of free space.
#6: Make sure you've got a DVD drive
New Windows ships on a DVD, so to install the new operating system, the computer must
have a DVD drive. This is another requirement that should be fairly easy to meemt, since
DVD drives have become common place or require only a fairly inexpensive upgrade.
#7: Sort out the versions
Determining which version of new Windows to install can be a bit more complex that it was
with previous version of Windows.
#8: Check application compatibility
To make your new Windows installation go as smoothly as possible, you should ensure that
your exsisting applications will run under that before installing it. You can download and
run the Application Compatability Toolkit to help you identify applications that may not run
under the new Windows.
#9: Don't overlook data backups
Backing up your date is one of the most critical steps in upgrading your operating system.
Unfortunately, this step is often overlooked in the excitement of installing the latest
operating system. In addition to backing up your data, it's best to verify that you have all of
the installation media from your existing software and the appropriate licensing
information before you start the installation.
#10: Remember the notebooks

Notebook computers must meet all of the same hardware specifications as desktop PCs.
The one problem with notebooks however is that if the graphics card isn't compatible, there
is a little chance that you can upgrade the system.
SPECIFIC OS:
Top 5 Things To Remember Before Installing Windows 7
In this guide I will point ou some important things that you need to do and remember
before installing Windows 7 on your machine.

1.) Check the hardware requirement: This is one of the most important factors that you
need to keep in mind before thinking about Windows 7. Though windows 7 should run fine
with the 512 MB RAM system, it's always better to follow Microsoft recommendations.
Below are the Windows 7 requirements:
1. A blank DVD
2. DVD-R/W Drive
3. 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
4. 1 GB of system memory
5. 16 GB of available disk space
6. Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (inorder to enable Aero theme)

2.) Backup Vista: If you are planning to upgrade from Vista SP1 (SP1 is a must) then it's a
good idea to backup your Vista drive so that you can revert back to Vista easily.
3.) You need to backup all your profiles and other important files that I have listed
below. In case you are planning to wipe out Vista and install Windows 7 then also it's better
to create a backup of all profiles.
Below are the important profiles that I backup:

1. Documents
2. Videos
3. Pictures
4. Saved games
5. Other program profiles that you use.
4.) The most important thing for a web addict is browser bookmark folder. Use backup
Bookmarks option in your browser to create a bookmark. Most of the browsers today can
backup the bookmarks automatically if you login your profile account.
5.) Last but not the least, don't forget to retrieve Office and other product keys using
the free programs like Winkey Finder.
