Alimak RCM-6 Raise Climbers

Alimak 6th generation Raise Climbers

for Kiruna project KUJ 2000
LKAB's Kiruna mine in northern Sweden is undergoing a
huge investment program estimated to be finished by the
turn of the century. Called KUJ 2000, the project involves
opening up a new main haulage level at 1045 m below the
surface to replace the existing 775 m deep level. A total of
32 new ore passes are being mined between these levels,
each with a diameter of 3 m, an angle of inclinations ranging from 5769 and average lengths of 300 m, driven in
two steps of around 150 m each.
To ensure stability, LKAB decided that the ore passes
would be reinforced with grouted cable bolts. As there was
no suitable equipment available on the market that could
meet the requirements, LKAB and its contractor SIAB contacted Alimak.
Alimak came up with a cost effective solution that resulted
in the delivery in August 1996 of the following equipment:
RCM-6 Drill Unit handling the horizontal drilling of holes
for the cable bolts and the installation of the guide rail. The
unit carries an elecrical winch for hoisting the guide rail
sections, a 4 ft BMM 1104-S03 feeder on Alimak drill boom,
drilling machine COP 1032 HD and an Alimak powerpack.
A strong safety roof and a safety brake controlled by an
overspeed governor are standard safety features of the
RCM-machines.
RCM-6 Cable Bolt Unit equipped with a work platform for
installation of cable bolts and dismantling of the guide rail.
The equipment is identical to the RCM-6 Drill Unit but does
not carry any drilling equipment.
Technical data:
Max payload, Drill Unit: ................................................................. 750 kg
Max payload, Cable Bolt Unit: ................................................1750 kg
Speed: ..........................................................16 m/min with 500 kg load
Descending speed: .............................................................2530 m/min
Electric motor: .........................................................................................30 kW
RCM-6 Service and Inspection Lift for extra passenger
or material transports during a shift and for stand-by emergency purposes.
Technical data:
Max payload: ........................................................350 kg/3 passengers
Speed: ...................................................................................................18 m/min

Descending speed: .............................................................2530 m/min

Electric motor: .......................................................................................7.5 kW
Hydraulic Docking Wagon to enable the RCM-6 units to
be quickly and easily moved between the 64 shafts. No
bottom station is required for the raise reinforcing operations with this solution. The docking unit is el-hydraulically
powered and has a telescopic boom for performing the
docking operation smoothly.
Technical data:
Dimensions:..........................9650 x 3000 x 1160 mm (l x w x h)
Weight: .....................................................................................................5000 kg
Electric motor: .......................................................................................5.5 kW
The working cycle is as follows:
The guide rail curve and the first few straight guide rail
sections are installed in the shaft and the drill unit is docked onto the guide rail. This operation is done in one day
only. The docking wagon is then disconnected and removed.
The remaining 2 m guide rail sections are installed all the
way to the top of the raise. Four sections can be brought
up in the RCM at a time and the average time for installing
one section including drilling the holes for the expansion
bolts is 2030 minutes. Total guide rail installation time per
raise (150160 m) including material transports is one week.
The holes for the cable bolts are then drilled from the top
to the bottom of the raise in a pattern that varies depending
on the rock conditions of each raise. The length of the
holes varies from 1.5 to 6 m and the diameter is 48 mm
except for the first 500 mm of each hole, that has to be 64
mm wide to fit the injection nozzle of the concrete pump. A
work shift average is 4 fans, equal to 120140 m, with 4 ft
drill rods which means that one shaft can be completed in
1012 shifts.
The docking wagon is brought back to carry the drill unit
to the next raise and then return with the RCM-6 cable bolt
unit. This unit is equipped with an approx. 0.5 m3 concrete
pump sufficient for about 110 m length of cable grouting.
The average grouting speed is 46 rows/shift which means
that a shaft can be finished in about one week. Thus, the
drilling of one shaft can be made simultaneously with the
bolting of another shaft in a continuous work cycle until all
shafts have been reinforced.
