Evaluation Of My Preliminary Task

After having completed our preliminary task, our class viewed our piece and gave us useful
feedback to take into account for our main film opening. This feedback was very helpful as it
helped us to gain opinions from a different perspective so that we could improve or maintain
certain attributes with regards to our filming style and editing.

Want went well in our preliminary task:

1) Completing specification - In our preliminary task, we demonstrated all the skills that were
required in the specification. We included match on action, shot reverse shot and we also didn't
break the 180 degree rule (which we thought was essential to limit audience confusion)

2) Lighting used appropriately - Our class mentioned the effectiveness of lighting in our
preliminary task as it helped to add to the eery atmosphere of the interrogation room. We used a
giant lamp as our only resource of light and by the appearance of characters in our task, it
appeared to suit the atmosphere very well

3) The involvement of sound - What we as a group and the class thought went well was the
involvement of sound in our task. We included non diegetic background music in the intro and quiet
background music during the interrogation. I feel we used the background music appropriately. It
was quiet enough to hear dialogue but was also easily heard. We also used diegetic sound such
as dialogue and by Zach screaming in the beginning

4) Editing - The editing was effective in our preliminary task as there was a continuous flow of
action. This could be noticed in the scene when I enter the interrogation room with the door
shutting behind me. This was effective editing. The door shut in time with the door shutting in the
previous shot

What didn't go well in our preliminary task

1) The GOPRO creating a less realistic perspective - The GOPRO was useful in our
preliminary task when allowing the audience to see action from Zachs perspective. However,
what GOPROs tend to create is a fish eye lens effect that can sometimes warp certain images.
This happened in our task when I lifted the bag off Zachs head and having reviewed the
footage, we realised that my face was slightly warped. In the future, I would use a camera that
doesn't have a fish eye lens when filming from persons perspective to limit the risk of having a
warped image.

My face and the

ceiling have also
been slightly
warped

Certain areas of
the room have
been warped due
to the fish eye lens
on the GOPRO.

2) More Dialogue - What our group felt we needed to improve on was dialogue. There was
dialogue present however it was only coming from my character. If we could redo the
preliminary task, I would have more dialogue from Zach

3) Planning - I felt that we could have planned more before filming our preliminary task as there were a
few moments during the editing process that we realised we didn't have every shot we needed. For our
main task, we must storyboard efficiently and take into account all shot types etc before we begin
filming

Action steps for our main task:

If we want shots from a characters perspective, we should use a standard camera rather
than a fish eye lens to limit the risk of an image being warped
If we are going to include dialogue, have it from all characters involved in the the opening
of the film
Ensure that we have planned efficiently, taking into account what we want from each shot
to limit confusion when during the filming process.
