IRON REMOVERS
Column filter
iron remover
The presence of iron gives a yellow-red
colour and a bad metallic taste to
water, causes deposits and corrosion
and as a consequence the pipes
gradually clog.
The iron contained in the water for
domestic use stains taps and linen
giving origin to aesthetic and hygiene
problems.
Potable water must not contain more
than 0,2 mg/l of iron and 0,05 mg/l of
manganese.
For many industrial and technological
uses, and for some countries rules are
even more restrictive.
GEL offers a series of column filters
called Deferr, removing high quantities
of manganese and iron from water. This
removal is firstly carried out by adding
hypochlorite to water. It is therefore
necessary to install a metering pump to
oxidize the iron and manganese.
Before passing through the Deferr filter,
the water has to remain in a tank for
the time necessary to complete the
oxidizing process.
From here, through a surge tank, water
passes to the Deferr filter and the
oxidized iron and manganese are
turned into flocks that are retained by
the iron remover filtering masses.
To periodically remove these flocks, the
iron remover automatically carries out a
backwashing. The frequency of the
backwashing is determined by the
pressure losses caused by the flocks
depositing.
It is absolutely necessary to install a
filter before the DEFERR and one after
it, to be sure that no flocks reach the
water system.
The iron remover is to be chosen
according to the required flow rate and
the iron concentration present in water
(see table F).

CLARIFIERS
Column filter
sand filter - clarifier
The water used for drinking, washing or
technological use, whether flowing
from water mains or private supplies,
generally contains impurities such as
sand, clay, silt and so on.
In order to protect the water supply
system (valves, pressure switches, taps,
boilers and so on), it is necessary to
carry out a filtering at the entry of the
water system to remove such
impurities.
If water only contains low
concentrations of sand or solid
particles, standard cartridge filters are
used. If the turbidity is due to clay, silt
and/or colloidal substances, filtering is
to be carried out by using quartz sand
multi-layered filters of different grain
sizes which are able to retain high
amounts of such impurities.
The DESABB clarifying filters are made
up of a column containing a permanent
multi-layered filtering bed.
To periodically remove the retained
impurities, the sand filter automatically
carries out a backwashing.
The clarifier is to be chosen according
to the required flow rate (see table G).

chlorine remover
Water can contain excess of chlorine
used for disinfecting, cause of bad
smells, colours, unpleasant tastes and
possible formation of compounds
dangerous for the human health.
For this reason it is suggested to install
a chlorine removing filter with activated
carbons. DECLOR chlorine removers
are made up of a column containing
special activated carbons masses of
vegetable origin with adsorbent effect.
The chlorine remover periodically
carries out a backwashing
automatically.
The chlorine remover is to be chosen

ENITRAT
NITRATE REMOVERS
Column filter
nitrate remover
The presence of nitrates in water is
caused by the decomposition of
nitrogenous substances that can be
found in human and animal waste and
mainly by the indiscriminate use of
(nitrogen-based) fertilizers in
agriculture. These fertilizers are being
more and more used and high
concentrations can be found
particularly in water beds and in all
agricultural areas strongly overworked.
Children until six-seven years old and
elderly people are more subject to the
risk, directly affecting the blood
composition, thus reducing
haemoglobin and giving origin to
carcinogenic processes.
As for town waterworks, a biological
treatment, very complex and difficult to
manage, is used to reduce the nitrates
concentration within the limit allowed
for potable water.
For domestic use, it is recommended
to reduce the excess of nitrates by
installing a nitrate remover with anionic
resins regenerable by sodium chloride
(kitchen salt).
The resins contained in the nitrate
removers retain the nitrates present in
water exchanging them with the
chlorides of the regenerating solution
(sodium chloride).
The regeneration can be programmed
with automatic volume/time procedure
(Timer VT 1000 AD) to guarantee the
maximum safety for a water delivered
without nitrates.
The nitrate remover is to be chosen
according to the daily water
consumption and to the concentration
of nitrates (see table I).

EUTRAL
NEUTRALIZERS
Column filter
neutralizer
Water, particularly in some
mountainous areas, may have very low
pH values, low hardness values and
high excess of carbon dioxide. This
situation causes corrosion phenomena
and oxides depositing, as a
consequence the perforation of pipes.
The solution to the problem is installing
neutralizing filters with calcium
carbonate.
NEUTRAL neutralizing filters are made
up of a column containing active
masses of calcium carbonate capable
to increase the pH value and the water
hardness, bringing it to a more
balanced value.
The masses need to be periodically
washed. This is automatically carried
out by the head of the column filter
controlled by an electronic timer. To
complete the protection of the
systems, it is necessary to install after
the neutralizer a metering pump for
dosing an anti-corrosion product.
The neutralizer is to be chosen
according to the required flow rate (see
table L).
