64th Navamsa Technique

By Shri Virendra Ji
Normally we are taught to believe the following regarding Kharesh ~
Lord of the 64th Navamsa from Lagna is Kharesh
Lord of the 22nd Drekkana from Lagna is Kharesh.
Some texts mention calculating these points from Moon!! Almost every book asks us to consider
this point and the Lord of this Navamsa Kharesh to look for bad results, but how? In order to
get a clear understanding of the subject a little primer on the basics will be mentioned here.
For Chara Rasi (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) the first Navamsa will be of the same sign
and then the next sign. So the first Navamsa in Aries will be Aries, Second Navamsa will be that
of Taurus!! For Sthira Rasi (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) the first Navamsa will be that of
the 9th sign. For example the first Navamsa in Taurus will be Capricorn and the second Navamsa
will be that of Aquarius. For Dwi-Swabhav Rasi (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) the
first Navamsa will be that of 5th sign. For example the first Navamsa in Gemini will be of Libra,
the second Navamsa will be that of Scorpio. The above rules are elementary and a student of
Astrology is supposed to know them by heart.
As we all know the Zodiac starts from 0 degrees Aries, so starting of Taurus will be 30 degrees,
Gemini will be 90 degrees and so on. Let us for example say Saturn as of today is at 25:56:56
Cancer, it indirectly means that Saturn is at 115:56:56 this will be from 0 degree Aries!!! Hope
the concept is clear. Do we use Decimal degrees? Or do we use deg:min:sec?? Depends on how
fast you want to do your calculations!! How? Saturn is right now at 115.949 (note the decimal)
degrees!!! Let us now convert this Decimal degree to Deg:Min:Sec value!!! Everybody knows
that 1 Degree has 60 Minutes & One Minute has 60 Seconds!!! Next separate the degree in
decimals 115.949 to 115.0 and 0.949. Now convert 0.949 to seconds by multiplying it by 60!!
We have 56.94!!! Separate this as 56 Minutes and 0.94!! Multiply 0.94 by 60 we have 56.4 So
the Empirical Value of 115.949 is written as 115:56:56 fair enough? Why have I stressed this
point? It is easier to use decimal degrees than conventional deg:min:sec values. This is greatly
helpful when you are calculating Kendra positions from a planet and its Trinal positions.
Kendra positions will be 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees!! Trinal positions will be 0, 120 and 240
degrees. As you can see it is much easier to use Decimals!!! One of the softwares Astrolog gives
you decimal degrees, hence my favorite. You will find the download link in appropriate topic on
the community. Navamsa divisions in a house We all know Navamsa is 1/9th division of a
house, so each division is 3deg and 20 sec of an arc!! Converted this to decimal each division is
3.3333 degrees!! How to calculate the 64th Navamsa? Different books and authors give different
methods of calculating this point; however we will concentrate on the method used for current
use. The method described is totally radical and taken from Nadi Shastras, so DO NOT
CONFUSE THIS METHOD FROM WHAT IS GIVEN BY SOFTWARES!!!
The Rule is ~ 64th Navamsa of a planet is the 8th house from that planet in Rasi Chart and its
Navamsa position would be the 4th house from that planets Natal Navamsa (D9) position.
Sounds confusing?? Allow me to explain step by step by taking an example horoscope.

Next let us apply the rule and find out the 64th Navamsa for each Planetary body and Lagna. For
beginners let us take
A) Lagna ~
Rasi Chart Lagna is Aquarius Find the 8th house from this spot It is Virgo!! ------- a
Navamsa Chart Locate the Lagna it is Gemini Find the fourth house from this spot!! It is
Virgo!! ----- b
Applying the 64th Navamsa rule we get the following ~ Lagnas 64th Navamsa Position will be
in Virgo (a) and in Virgo Navamsa (b)!!!
Virgo Navamsa in Virgo is the last Navamsa!!! Please refer rule for Navamsa given above. The
degrees will be 26.6666 to 30.0000 (Decimal) or conventional 29:56:40 to 30:00:00
All this is in the Rasi Chart!!

B) Let us calculate for Rahu

Rasi Chart Rahu is in Sagittarius 8th from Sagi is Cancer.
Navamsa Chart Rahu is in Leo, 4th house from Taurus is Scorpio
Apply Rule 64th Navamsa position of Rahu will be in Cancer and in Scorpio Navamsa fair
enough?? The relevant degrees will be 96.6666 to 99.9999 Decimals!!!
How do we use this data in predictions?
For simplicity let us take an event date for this native..
Natal Chart
Date: July 24, 2006
Time: 14:30:00
Time Zone: 5:30:00 (East of GMT)
Place: 74 E 30' 00", 15 N 52' 00"

Rahu - BK 4 Pi 13' 32.42" UBha 1 Pi Le
Ketu 4 Vi 13' 32.42" UPha 3 Vi Aq
Coming to the Natal chart itself, we find that Mercury and Venus are in the 64th Navamsa area
of Rahu see calculations!! So the event was waiting to happen!!! Venus being the Sthir karka
for spouse and Mercury is the Sthir Karka for friends and relatives. So the spouse was supposed
to cheat on the native!!
This can be also confirmed from UL in the chart, UL is in Scorpio while Rahu is in Sagittarius.
Rahus Drishti on UL is a sign of cheating in relations.
Coming on the event date both Sun and Saturn are in Cancer, with Sun at 7:23:54, which is in
the same quarter as the 64th Navamsa for Rahu calculated earlier. Sun is also the Lord of the 7th
house!!!
Easy deduction? The day was destined to be a horrible surprise for the native he came home to
see his wife with some other person!!!
I will leave it upon the student to calculate 64th Navamsa degrees for each planetary body and
confirm why this event happened on that particular day??? Sun crosses this point every year,
remember??
Conclusion

Bottom line is calculating 64th Navamsa positions of each planet in a horoscope. Note down the
degrees. Next look up at transit position of planets!!! See if any transit planet is in the 8th
position from a planet in the Rasi Chart. The event will happen when the Transit planet will cross
the 64th Navamsa degrees!!! Please note we did not use ANY DASA system!!! Now sit back and
relax, take a good look at your horoscope and find out event dates!!! Next calculate the Kendra
and Trinal Positions from 64th Navamsa degrees!!! Some events take place within this frame
work too. In my own humble experience of 8 years using this technique I have predicted death,
rape, marriage, awards, rewards and many other events!!! I will now leave it to the student to
figure it out for him

Dear Austin,
Let me add little math here how to calculate navamsa and then 64th nav.
First refer to D-1. Take the moon. Find the rasi in which the moon is located. Now that rasi is
whether Firey, Earthy, Airy, or Wateryfind.
For the rasi Fiery like Aries, Leo, and Sagi. the navamsa always starts from Aries.
For the rasi Earthy like Taurus, Virgo, Capricornthe navamsa always starts from Capricorn
For the rasi Airy like Gemini, Libra, Aquarius the navamsa always starts from Libra.
For the rasi Watery like Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces the navamsa always starts from Cancer.
Like this, defining the rasi from where the navamsa starts we calculate the navamsa on the basis
of the longitute of the planet of which we are to fine the navamsa.
Eg.,
Moon in 28 deg. 02 min in Sg. find the navamsa of the moon.
Now the Sg is fiery sign so the navamsa starts from Aries. For
0-3:20 (3 deg. 20. min) belongs to Aries.
3:21 to 6:40 belongs to Taurus.
6:41 to 10:00 belongs to Gemini. So like wise......
26:41 to 30:00 belongs to Sg. So the Navamsa for the moon is Sg.
Another eg,
Asc. in Taurus 6 deg. 33 min
Taurus is Earthy Sign so navamsa starts from Capricorn.
0 to 3:20 - Capricorn
3:21 to 6:40 - Aquarius. So our longitude falls here and this will be the asc in navamsa.
As I have understood for the calculating the 64th nav., take the moon in D-1. Find the 8th house
from it. Take that rasi. Now find the navamsa for this rasi AS IF moon were located here with
the same logitude. Now you can calculate the navamsa for this position. That will be the 64th
nav. of the moon which will be always 4th rasi to your moon in D-9.
Eg.
Moon in 19:58 in Aquarius in D-1.

Now take 8th sign from Aquarius and it is Virgo. Now let's assume the moon is here. ie, Moon
19:58 in Virgo.
Virgo is Earthy Sign, so navamsa starts from Capricorn.
1.)0 to 3:20
- Capri.
2.)3:21 to 6:40 - Aquarius
3.).....
4.).....
5.).....
6.)16:41 to 20:00 - Gemini. So the Gemini is the 64th navamsa for the moon. Gemini will be 4th
from your moon in D-9.
Thanks.

Let me ask a few few questions on the paragraph you were kind enough tosubmit.
You wrote:
"The 64th Navamsa from the Moon corresponds to the 4th house from the Moon in
D-9. E.g., in your chart your Moon is in the 5th Navamsa of Taurus which is
Taurus. The 8th from your Moon is Sagittarius and therefore your 64th Navamsa
from the Moon is the 5th Navamsa of Sag = Leo (4th house from Moon in
Navamsa). So the lord of your 64th Navamsa from the Moon is the Sun."

1. Total Navamsas for D-9 = 108 correct? ( 9 X 12 =108)

2. "The 64th Navamsa from the Moon corresponds to the 4th house from the Moon in D-9"

The forth house from Chandra in my D9 = Leo. But if you do the math it is NOT

the 64th from Chandra i.e. 4 signs X 9 = 36 Navamsas distant.

Question: Why do you mention the 8th from Chandra if we have already established that the

the 4th from Chandra = Leo and therefore = the 64 Navamsa? ( yet mathematically
does not =64

Navamsa in distance)
3. "The 8th from your Moon is Sagittarius ( Yes, I see this, both inD1 and D9)and therefore
your 64th Navamsa from the Moon is the 5th Navamsa of Sag = Leo (4th house from Moon in
Navamsa)."
Question: I do not get what you are telling me here... how does Sag=Leo?

Unless you are telling me the lord of that navamsa is Ravi? Can you show me the
math?

I would assume to find the 64th navamsa it equals 7 signs ( or 7x9 =63) + 5
navamsas from

Chandra's position in Taurus + 1 more navamsa for a total of 69 navamsas from

Chandra.

If 8 signs it's8 X 9= 72 Navamsa and you over shoot the 64th?

Dear Satya,

I am aware that some people reckon the 64th navamsa from Moon. But I find it amusing that you
say so emphatically that the 64th navamsa is "never" taken from lagna.
Each house from each planet (and lagna) has some meaning or the other. After all, that is the
basic premise behind ashtakavarga! I certainly agree that the 8th house cusp from Moon is vital,
especially in D-9, D-16, D-27, D-30 etc. But I respectfully disagree when you say that the 8th
house cusp from lagna has no meaning in navamsa.
***
In our tradition, the cusp of the 8th house from lagna is called the "Khara" point and its lords in
various divisions (including navamsa) are used. Like I said earlier, the lord of the sign containing
the cusp of the 8th house from lagna in a divisional
chart gives inauspicious results related to the matters shown by that chart.
In general, cusps of various houses from lagna are key points in a chart. Just as the cusp of
8th is evil, cusp of 9th brings protection and fortune. Here, we take Vedic cusps (which are
at 30 deg from each other).
I gave the example of Indira Gandhi yesterday. The cusps of her 8th and 9th houses from lagna
fall in Libra and Cancer in D-10 (respectively). She became PM in Moon's AD and was out of
power almost exactly during Venus AD.
Let me give some more examples.
***
Rajiv Gandhi's lagna is at 14Le45. The cusp of the 8th house is at 14Pi45 and the cusp of the 9th
house is at 14Ar45. Please note that 14Ar45 falls in Leo in D-10 and 14Pi45 falls in Leo in D-12.
Sun is the lord of both.
In his chart, Shashtihayani dasa is the most applicable nakshatra dasa (as Sun is in lagna) and
gives impeccable results. His Sun mahadasa as per Shashtihayani dasa started in 1984. As soon
as the dasa started, there was a misfortune related to mother (8th cusp in D-12!)and fortune in
career (9th cusp in D-10!). His mother was assassinated and he became India's PM.
Now take George HW Bush (papa Bush). His lagna is at 17Le23. The cusp of the 9th house is at
17Ar23. It falls in Virgo in D-10. Mercury is the lord. The good ols Vimsottari dasa is the best
nakshatra dasa in his chart. The mahadasa of Mercury made him US president!
Take the 8th house cusp now, which is at 17Pi23. This falls in Ar in D-10. Mars is the lord. Mars
antardasa during Jan 1992-Jan 1993 saw his loss in elections!
Now take son Bush. George W Bush has lagna at 14Cn47. The 9th house cusp is at 14Pi47. In D-

10, this point falls in Pi. Lord is Jupiter. In his chart, the best applicable nakshatra dasa is
Dwisaptati sama dasa (7th lord Saturn is in lagna). The 9-year Jupiter dasa is running since
spring 2000! This dasa made him US president.
Take the chart of Indian actress Aishwarya Rai. Her lagna is at 10Vi39. The cusp of the 9th
house is at 10Ta39 and it falls in Ar in D-10. Vimsottari dasa of Mars started in 2000 and has
been a fortunate period in her career.
Finally, take the chart of my namesake - late Indian PM Sri PV Narasimha Rao. His lagna is at
24Vi20. The cusps of 8th and 9th houses are at 24Ar20 and 24Ta20. They fall in Sg and Vi
respectively. Lords are Jupiter and Mercury respectively. In his
chart, the 10th lord Mercury is in 10th and hence Chaturaseeti sama dasa is the most applicable
nakshatra dasa. It was during Mercury's Chaturaseeti sama dasa that he became India's PM! In
the next dasa of Jupiter, he was totally sidelined by his own Congress party. In Jupiter dasa, he
did a lot of writing and his writings were in the
public eye. It is interesting to note that the cusp of the 3rd house (of writing) falls in Pisces in D10.
***
There are simple techniques like this that work consistently in real charts. These techniques are
applicable in annual charts also.
When applying them in natal charts, the key is to use the correct nakshatra dasa. When you use
the correct nakshatra dasa, a lot of simple principles of Jyotish work cleanly and consistently.
But some people want to always use Vimsottari dasa as if it was some kind of panacea. They
probably think that Maharshi Parasara wasted his precious time by teaching so many dasas. God
bless them!
***
Now, one practical note. If you want to see where the cusp of 8th or 9th or 6th house falls in
various divisional charts like D-9, D- 10, D-12 etc, you can use a convenient feature of JHora.
Select "Edit" in the top menu and "User defined special point". Now, define the special point.
You can specify any special point at any number of degrees, minutes and seconds ahead of (or
behind) lagna or any planet or any sahamam. If you define a special point that is 210 deg ahead
of lagna, it is the cusp of 8th house. If you define a special point that is 240 deg ahead of lagna, it
is the cusp of 9th house. You can also try cusps of 3rd house from Mars, 5th house from Jupiter
etc. You can even select sahamams. For example, you can check where punya sahamam falls in
dasamsa! There is also an icon to access this feature.

In general, the cusps of all houses from lagna (or some other reference) fall in quadrants from it
in navamsa. The cusps of dharma trikonas (1st, 5th and 9th) fall in the 1st house in navamsa. The
cusps of artha trikonas (2nd, 6th and 10th) fall in the 10th house in navamsa. The cusps of kaama
trikonas (3rd, 7th and 11th) fall in the 7th house in navamsa. The cusps of moksha trikonas (4th,
8th and 12th) fall in the 4th house in navamsa. Ponder over the significance of this!
BTW, Satya, do you have any classical basis for seeing diseases in general (and not just
hereditary diseases) in D-12?
In our tradition, we consider D-30 to show the root cause of diseases. D-30 is a subconscious level chart and shows sub- conscious weaknesses and the paapa purusha (evil
personified) inside each person. It shows one's inner enemies (while D-6 shows external
enemies). We consider the inner enemies and sub-conscious weaknesses are the root cause
of disease.
Part I
I always admired your erudition and respected your scholarship greatly. I never thought even in a
dream that I could catch the man who seems to have every reference book with him off guard
like this! :-)
> 4. Classically the 64th Navamsa is almost always seen from the MOON.
> (my overall emphasis, though I still maintain that the classics
> never do it from lagna)
This is factually incorrect. Please read the first chapter in "Predicting through Navamsa and Nadi
Astrology" by C.S. Patel. That chapter is basically an article published in Astrological Magazine
in 1985. He gives several classical references to support the 64th navamsa from lagna. He even
quoted Parasara's BPHS to support the usage of 64th navaamsas from lagna and Moon (but I
could not locate those verses in the BPHS I have and there may be some numbering problem).
Here are some other classical references given by Patel (the meanings given under the verses are
in my words).
(1) Prasna Margam 9-60, 9-61
lagna janmapayoh shatroo nijaashtama patee yadi |
samau vaa yadi vaa bandhoo swalpa madhya chiraayushah ||

chandraamsheshasya tadbhooshaa navaamsheshothavaa raaveh |

lagnesho vaapi yadyevam swalpa madhya chiraayushah ||
Meaning: If the lords of 1st and 8th houses from lagna and Moon are inimical or neutral and
friendly, the native has short, middle or long life. Similarly, deduce short, middle or long life
from the lords of the 1st and 64th navamsas from that of Moon or Sun or lagna.
Thus, there is a reference to the 64th navamsa from Moon, Sun and lagna here!
(2) Hora Ratnam (8-27)
janma lagnaamshakaachchandra navaamshaadatha vaapi vaa |
raahau chatuh shashtimite nidhanam cha vinirdishet ||
Meaning: If Rahu is [transiting] in the 64th navamsa from the navamsa occupied by natal lagna
or even Moon, death may be indicated.
(3) Jataka Desa Margam (7-19)
janmani lagnopagataachchandropagataannavaamshakaadvaapi |
chturuttara shashtyamshakabhe lagne vaa samaadishenmaranam ||
Meaning: If [transit] lagna is in the sign containing the 64th navamsa from the
navamsa containing lagna or Moon at birth, death may be indicated.
***
I am aware of the "Jataka Parijatam" quote. But some other "classics" do mention both lagna and
Moon in the context of the 64th navamsa. Forget lagna, even Sun was mentioned by Prasna
Marga!
May Jupiter's light shine on us,
