For Schools

New Year's Day Polar Plunge
with Police Chief Joe Stilinovich to raise
funds for schools in Seal Beach, Rossmoor and Los Alamitos. It was "cool" in
more ways than one as participants,
some dressed as a horse, polar bear and
even a police chief, ran into the ocean,
north of Seal Beach Pier to help the Los
Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF)
provide technical support and other
things for science, engineering, athletics
and arts in the schools. "This is one of
our major fundraisers for the year," said
Sean Payne, vice president of LAEF.
Leading the charge into the ocean was
good-natured Chief Stilinovich, who
wore his uniform, complete with badge,
into the cool water on a chilly but clear
morning. "What a better way to start the
new year than helping our kids," he said.
The event, sponsored by LAEF, raised
much-needed funds on behalf of the

something about how that campaign to
come (which is really already underway)
may shake out.
1. Courtrooms Before Campaigns

hree Republican governors who appear likely to run for president face
legal issues at home that could derail a
campaign before it gets started. Texas
Gov. Rick Perry was indicted in August
on two felony counts of abuse of power
for publicly threatening to veto funding
for public corruption prosecutors, and
then making good on that threat. An investigation into alleged illegal coordination between Wisconsin Gov. Scott
Walkers 2012 recall campaign and conservative groups is on hold pending action from the state Supreme Court , while
federal prosecutors in New Jersey continue to investigate what role Gov. Chris
Christies administration played, if any,
in tying up traffic on the George Washington Bridge in 2013.
3. Iowa Straw Poll

he Iowa Republican Partys presidential straw poll has come under
sharp scrutiny in the past two campaigns
after elevating candidates out of step with
the larger Iowa and national GOP . The
event, held the summer before the winter
caucuses, is also a source of tension
among campaigns which pay a steep
price to take part in what is nominally a
fundraiser for the state party. Gov. Terry
Branstad , Iowas six-term governor,
wants to end it, while the Iowa Republi-

5. Right to Work
isconsin Gov. Scott Walker faces
the prospect of another public fight
with organized labor early in 2015 should
the states GOP -controlled legislature try
to pass a right to work law, which
would make private labor union membership optional. Walkers successful effort to curtail the union rights of public
employees led to weeks of visible and
vocal protests in Madison during his first
term, something hes eager to avoid as he
weighs if and when to enter the race for
president. But it is a priority for Republican lawmakers who expanded their majorities in the midterm elections and
arent as tied to the laws presidential political implications as their ambitious
governor.
6. Republican Debates
fter a prolonged 2012 primary season that left their presidential nominee bloodied, the Republican National
Committee is making significant changes
to its debate schedule ahead of the presidential primary season. Party leaders
plan to dramatically reduce the number
of debates and assert more control over
the selection of moderators. Still, logistical questions remain for a 2016 primary
field that could feature well more than a
dozen high-profile contenders. When the
debates begin, candidates may struggle
to speak for more than a few minutes on

a stage featuring so many podiums.
7. Immigration Actions
erhaps no issue will riddle Republicans as much as immigration in the
next presidential campaign. GOP hopefuls must balance an appeal to conservatives who detest anything they view as
amnesty for people living in the U.S.
illegally, while also reaching out to the
nations fast-growing Hispanic popula-
tion. Republicans in Congress successfully pushed to fund the Department of

Homeland Security , which oversees the
nations immigration enforcement, only
through next February, creating a moment in which they can try to challenge
Obamas executive action on immigration while in control of both houses of
Congress . Some GOP lawmakers are
also at work drafting business-friendly
bills to boost visas for farm and high-tech
workers. Republicans running for president will be asked if they back their
partys actions in Congress , and if not,
be expected to propose their own solutions.
8. Common Core
n a Republican primary where the candidates may have more similarities
than differences, the partys debate over
the Common Core education standards
could be explosive. Once endorsed by
state leaders in both parties, some conservatives have attacked the voluntary
standards as a government takeover of
education. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush
may have more on the line than anyone,
having dedicated much of his political
career to education and refusing to withdraw his support for Common Core.
One-time supporters, such as Louisiana
Gov. Bobby Jindal , have reversed course
and become vocal critics. The issue could
emerge as a deal breaker among many
conservatives who hold great sway in
Republican primaries.
9. Clinton and the Economy

promoting a book for which she was
handsomely paid, she said she and husband Bill Clinton were dead broke
when they left the White House . She

"In VATICAN CITY Pope Francis named 15 new cardinals Sunday, selecting
them from 14 nations, including far-flung corners of the world such as Tonga, New
Zealand, Cape Verde and Myanmar, to reflect the diversity of the church and its
growth in places like Asia and Africa.Other cardinals hail from Ethiopia, Thailand
and Vietnam. Another is form Sicily, where the Church in recent decades has been
galvanizing public rejection of the Mafia.
Referring to the Vatican, Francis told faithful in St. Peter's Square that the churchmen come "from every continent" and "show the indelible tie with the church of
Rome to churches in the world."
In addition to the 15 new cardinals who are under 80 and thus eligible to vote for
the next pope, Francis bestowed the honor on five churchmen older than that. He
said they distinguished themselves for their work in the Vatican bureaucracy, in diplomatic service in giving witness to their love of Christ and God's people. Those included men from the pope's native Argentina, Mozambique and Colombia.
Speaking from a Vatican window to a crowd in St. Peter's Square, Francis made
another surprise announcement. He said that on Feb. 12-13, he will lead of meeting
of all cardinals to "reflect on the orientations and proposals for the reform of the
Roman Curia," the Vatican's administrative bureaucracy.
Francis is using his papacy, which began in March 2013, to eliminate corruption,
inefficiency and other problems in the curia." That's a good thing right...unless of
course you are part of the problem that he perceives needs routing out. I wonder if
this has anything to do with diluting the influence of the Western World Cardinals

Mark Van Meter

untington Beach Officer Mark Van Meter was new on patrol when his first man
down call came over the radio. The man had suffered a possible heart attack while
in the shower. Im thinking Im going to be doing chest compressions and working
to save this mans life, said Van Meter, recalling the 2002 incident.
He ran up the stairs following after now-retired Officer Ed Kennedy. Van Meter expected
to walk into chaos when he entered that apartment and instead was met with silence. I
walked in and saw Officer Kennedy there signing with a woman, Van Meter said.
Turns out, the deaf woman had found her husband dead in the shower several hours
earlier but was afraid to report the death to police, Van Meter said.She dreaded the process
of dealing with somebody who didn't know her language. After the call, Van Meter asked
Kennedy what the woman said. He told me she was immediately put at ease because he
knew her language, Van Meter said.
In 2010, Van Meter, a motor officer and former Navy SEAL, enrolled in American Sign
Language classes. The classes began as a way to get a pay bump since bilingual officers
are paid five percent more than their single-language counterparts. However, it quickly
turned into a passion. Van Meter is the only officer at Huntington Beach PD who is ASL
proficient and one of just a handful in Orange County with that designation. Van Meter also
teaches a course at the Orange County Sheriffs Department Academy. In addition, Van
Meter said he has plans to also visit Huntington Beach High School and wants to meet the
students at Irvines University High School which houses the Orange County Department
of Educations Regional Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program.

trends behind its latest additions.
Today Oxford Dictionaries announces the
latest update to its free online dictionary of
English at OxfordDictionaries.com. Reflecting research into current language usage
trends, new entries include adorbs, bingewatch, cray, humblebrag, listicle, neckbeard,
SMH, side boob, vape, and YOLO.
Use of the word binge-watch has shown a
steady increase over the past two years, with
notable spikes in usage recorded around the
Netflix releases of House of Cards, Season
Two in February 2014 and Orange is The
New Black, Season Two in June 2014. According to Oxfords language monitoring
programme, the use of binge-watch increased
fourfold in February 2014 and tripled in June
2014, based on its average use over the last
two years. Changes in our media consumption habits also see hate-watch, listicle, livetweet, second screen, sentiment analysis, cord
cutting, and hyperconnected
added to OxfordDictionaries.com in this update. Technology more
broadly continues to have
a strong influence on the
English language, and is
reflected in new entries including acquihire, clickbait,
Deep Web, dox, fast follower, geocache, in silico,
octocopter, responsive, smartwatch, and tech-savvy.

world. Naturally, many words are used in
similar frequencies in the UK and US, for instance the informal additions amazeballs and
neckbeard. However, some new slang and informal words catch on much more quickly in
a particular variety of Englishfor instance,
in our monitoring sample, side boob is more
than 10 times more common in the UK than
in the US (although this is due in part to its
frequent use in the British media), whereas
adorbs is used about 4 times more

mess, humblebrag, mansplain, side-eye, and

cray (crazy), seems to have
arisen initially in the reduplicated form cray cray in
the early 2000s, but it was

Unfortunately, canola oil, which is high in monounsaturated fats in its natural form, is often hydrogenated
so it can stay fresh longer in processed foods. Partially
hydrogenated oilsalso known as Trans fatswere
shown to be detrimental to memory in a recent University of California San Diego study. Trans fats increase
the shelf life of the food but reduce the shelf life of the
person, reports study author Beatrice Golomb.
Of course, a well-rounded diet with plenty of fruits
and vegetables may still be the best way to stay healthy.
But its good to know that a little fat here and there
won't kill you. In fact, it might well help you live a
healthier, more productive life.

diets had a remarkable 89 percent increased risk for developing dementia as contrasted to those whose diets
contained the most fat. Having the highest levels of fat
consumption was actually found to be associated with
an incredible 44 percent reduction in risk for developing

side." This past Saturday, as I led a seminar in Chevy Chase, Maryland, one of the participants offered these tasting notes while comparing two
wines.
We were exploring Pinot Noir from California and
France. I offered more typical descriptions to highlight
the differences -- dark, ripe cherries on the Sonoma example versus earthy, tart cherries on the one from Burgundy -- and several students pushed back.
At least half the room admitted that they find tasting
notes bewildering. Others acknowledged that they scoff
at wine descriptors. Many confessed that such notes intimidate them.
At first, I defended the standard wine review. I collect

wine, so I pay close attention to people whose palates are

similar to mine, like Eric Asimov of the New York Times.
And I read reviews from critics like Stephen Tanzer and
Antonio Galloni of Vinous to glean information about a
wine's general flavor profile. With Chardonnay, for example, I'm interested in wines that are high in acid and
offer aromas of tart citrus fruits. I'm rarely excited by a
heavy Chardonnay with notes of ripe tropical fruits, butter, and oak. Basic descriptors like these help describe a
wine and its style.
But I could sympathize with my students. Communicating effectively about wine shouldn't demand an encyclopedic knowledge of rare fruits
and bizarre aromas; after all, wine is just fermented
grape juice. Thanks to mass-market wine magazines, however, we've come to expect gobbledygook.
Consider Wine Spectator's wine of the year,
Dow's 2011 Vintage Port. Critic Kim Marcus
praised the wine for its "surplus of dark plum,
kirsch, and cassis flavors" and savored "Asian
spice and raspberry tart accents" on the finish.
Raspberry tart accents? Kirsch and cassis? The
wine sounds like a cocktail that's been spilled all
over some throw pillows. It's no wonder why
everyday consumers are turned off by the rhetoric
of oenophilia.
In my seminar, the student who personified the
two Pinot Noirs was joking. But after quickly reflecting on the notes, I praised his creativity and
urged all my students to follow his lead.
After all, the descriptions were spot-on. Full of
rich, ripe fruit and oak, the Sonoma Pinot Noir was
a bruiser. If it were a person, he would always be
the loudest in the room -and a liability at the bar.

The Burgundy, by contrast, was graceful. If it
were a person, she'd
spend her days studying
poetry -- and offer a mischievous grin to admirDavid White ers.
At the very least, descriptions like these are just as valuable as laundry lists
of obscure aromas.
Imagine, for a moment, if I offered you a glass of either
Dom Perignon or Krug, two of the world's top Champagnes. If I compared the former to Natalie Portman and
the latter to Scarlett Johansson, you'd know what to expect: Dom Perignon's beauty is in its elegance; Krug is
more of an opulent bombshell.
Likening wine to art also works. My favorite Beaujolais isn't enjoyable because it smells like strawberries and
plums. It's enjoyable because it's like a Bruce Springsteen
concert -- exhilarating, spiritual, and deeply emotional,
with a finish that just keeps going.
Experiences also work. My favorite Champagne brings
me back to the winemaker's small hotel in Avize, France,
where I once spent a magical evening.
Wine enthusiasts are inevitably asked if we can truly
detect crazy aromas in our wine. Those who answer affirmatively then find themselves explaining why they
care so deeply about a beverage that smells like tar, wet
leaves, black pepper, and blueberries. The truth, of
course, is that those aromas have nothing to do with why
we love wine. So perhaps it's time to change the way we
talk about it.

Cops Killed By Guns Rise by 56%; Include 15 Ambushes
he Associated Press gets full credit for bringing the details of the recent

noted..."The number of law enforcement officers killed by firearms jumped by 56
percent this year and included 15 ambush deaths. But
gun-related police deaths still remain far below historic
highs and lower than the average annual figures in the
past decade, according to the recently released report.
The report by (National Law Enforcement Officers
Memorial Fund) cited 50 officers killed by guns in
2014; considerably higher than the 32 such deaths in
2013, but the same as 2012 figures.
2011 saw 73 officers killed in gunfire, the most in any
year in the past decade; 55 was the average since 2004
(police deaths annually).
The report called out 126 federal, local, tribal and territorial officers killed in the line of duty in 2014, or a 24 percent jump from last
year's 102 on-duty deaths, though below the average annual figures since 2004
and the all-time high of 156 in 1973, said Steve Groeninger, a spokesman for the
memorial fund.
Of the 126 officer deaths this year, shootings were the leading cause, then traffic-related fatalities, at 49.

wrong... "It all started back on December 20th with a routine report
of a stolen bicycle. What Officer
Brent Northrup learned was that this
case was anything but routine.
The victim in this case was a Branciforte Middle School student, Justa
Ferguson. She earned the bicycle
from the school for her good grades.
A thief had taken her hard-earned
bike from the familys porch. Just
like that.her reward was stolen
from her.
Officer Northrup circulated a picture of the stolen bicycle to our entire
department, in hopes someone might
see the bike. The next day at their
shift briefing, the team talked about
this theft. During that briefing..the
mission was hatched.
During their briefing, the team discussed their outrage. Thats when Officer Carly Cross put that outrage into
action and formed a plan with Officer
Wendy Ramm and Brent Northrup.
The team was going to surprise Justa

with a new bicycle and deliver it
Christmas morning.
Carly reached out to Mom to make
the arrangements. Over their days
off, the plan was put into full swing.
Officer Northrup drove to the Walmart in Sacramento on the promise
they had the bike. They didnt; but
not to be deterred, Brent found the
bike at the West Sacramento store.
Christmas morning, the entire
dayshift team saddled up and headed
out.
The family was treated to a full police parade welcome complete with
lightsand the surprise of a new
bike complete with a bike light, bell
and lock for Justa.

the community in addition to the job

This year's increase in gun-related deaths among officers followed a dramatic

dip in 2013, when the figure fell to levels not seen since the 19th century. It is
speculated that possibly this year's increase is the result of potentially increased
tension between police and the public following recent
high-profile deaths of unarmed men by police officers in
Ferguson, Missouri and NYC.
State by state...with the most officer deaths were California, at 14, Texas, at 11, and New York, at nine.
Florida followed with six deaths, and Georgia had five,
according to the report.
The 15 ambush assaults on police officers this year
compares to just five in 2013, but equalled 2012 for the
highest total since 1995, the report said.
"With the increasing number of ambush-style attacks
against our officers, I am deeply concerned that a growing anti-government sentiment in America is influencing weak-minded individuals
to launch violent assaults against the men and women working to enforce our
laws," said Craig Floyd, chairman and CEO of the memorial fund.
He added in his statement: "We need to tone down the rhetoric and rally in support of law enforcement and against lawlessness."

New Program Offers

Lowest Down Payment
Fannie Mae has just released a new program that
reduces their minimum down payment requirements
from 5% to just 3%. Not only is this slightly lower
than the FHAs 3.5% minimum down payment, but
the differences in mortgage insurance will make this
a much cheaper financing option than the FHA.
As Ive written about previously, the largest dif-
ference in cost between a conventional loan and an

FHA loan is in the mortgage insurance (MI). The
monthly MI cost on an FHA loan is nearly double
that of a conventional loan backed by Fannie Mae or
Freddie Mac. This monthly MI is also temporary on
a conventional loan (2 year minimum) where the
FHA monthly MI is permanent for all who put less
than 10% down (11 year minimum for those with
10% down or more). Whats more, the FHA also
charges a 1.75% funding fee on all transactions. On
a $300,000 loan amount, thats an extra $5,250 in
fees to secure that FHA backing. This expense simply doesnt exist on a conventional loan.
