Das Netz and the Readings
Das Netz was a movie about Unabomber and his beginnings and such . It was an
independent film directed by Lutz Dammbeck and premiered in 2003 . The film explored
the ideas of revolutionary artists, engineers, and scientists, all of whom did their part in
revolutionizing their field. This film talked about many concepts which I found amazing .
The film delved into things I found interesting such as mind control experiments, and an
alliance of brilliant minds all combining to remodel post-WW II man in order to avoid a
repeat of the war. The readings also made me think of the complicated relationship that
we humans have with technology.
Humans have reached new grounds in terms of technology since the time of the
Unabomber and when Das Netz originally came out even . We, as humans, have a
mutual responsibility to the world that we inhabit in which we have to take care of the
world and have the means to, except humans hold us back . The lines between
technology and humans have always been separated by a thick black line, but even
now in the year 2015, it is separated and yet blurred . Engineers, artists and scientists
have all worked together before to achieve advances in technology that we need and
desire but we have also hindered ourselves .
The close relationship between technology and humans is one that I embrace .

Yet this is not true for everyone as some people are scared of the cybernetization of
our world. Artists, engineers and scientists have worked on combining their fields into
one, which is technology. Scientists work on the details, engineers work on making the
idea a real thing and artists work on making the design pleasurable to the eye and
touch. This relationship is one that I accept, because as man advances in technology,
the need to integrate technology with humans will increase . For better or for worse, this
idea is what scares people.
The relationship between scientists, artists and engineers are talked about in the
documentary, Das Netz. This relationship began with the idea of a common goal and
became one which was extremely efficient. Through combining ideas, these three
extremely different fields have made many incredible things such as the internet even .
As each individual worked on their own part, the common goal in which they worked for
became closer and closer. The scientist would work on the math, the engineer on how it
work in the real life and the artist on how to make it consumable .
Advances in technology is exponentially increasing as humans go forward into
the modern technological age. As the need for faster, better and stronger hardware and
software increases, so will the supply. These advances are what separated us humans
from cavemen. The world has reached a point in society where people even criticize the
world that we live in due to these technological advances . When people criticize
technology through saying things such as oh, everyone is on their smartphone, there is

no human interaction anymore, they do not realize that the world is connected to their
smartphone and that the smartphone is one key advancement in technology that
allowed for humans to interact with humans all over the world . These advances have
increased the interaction between humans should they believe it or not .
In the time before these advances of technology, humans evolved through the
use of evolution and on a survival basis and Darwinism . Yet, now as man does not have
the need to adapt to new environments through evolution, we have evolved through the
use of technology and intelligence. We have created technological solutions for
problems that have hindered humans in the past and are still trying to create new
solutions for problems that still hinder us. Things such as lost limbs, blindness,
deafness, paraplegia, and such have been addressed and solutions are there for some .
Advances in medicine have also made death by the common cold a thing of the past in
most urban areas. These things that humans have done with technology are still
advancing everyday and have made the world a better place for everyone, although
some may disagree.
The things that scare us humans though, is the idea of advancing too far in
technology. When advances in technology increase to a point in which humans become
slaves to technology rather than technology working for us is the point in which humans
are doomed. Artificial intelligence is one thing that has scared humans . Artificial
intelligence that becomes too smart for us is the nightmare waiting to happen according

to some people. As artificial intelligence technology advances, the law of robotics may
be broken. Some super computers have artificial intelligence and it has helped them in
computing things at a faster rate and even everyday products have the ability for
artificial intelligence. Human smart-devices have the capability for artificial intelligence
although quite limited. Even games have artificial intelligence coded inside of them
when you go against non playable characters or robots . Although the difficulty in them
can range from being quite limited to the artificial intelligence being much better than the
human. The idea of humans losing their place as the most intelligent beings on Earth is
quite scary and quite possible with how fast technology is advancing, although I am
skeptical of being enslaved to technology.
Overall, the relationship between humans and technology has become
intertwined to the point that I feel some humans cannot live without modern technology.
The advances in technology will never stop and will always be worked on due to the
demand and vastness that is technology. I welcome advances in technology with open
arms as I feel that the world needs technology to survive and continue growing . As
evolution has stopped, the evolution through the use of technology and intelligence
shall never be stopped.
